What world does a European student imagine as they look beyond the Academy towards their future professional life? What horizons can they see which we cannot? Does that picture engage their moral compass, tracking the pressing contemporary issues from Planetary Environmental Crisis to the fragility of the Global South? How do they, as members of an increasingly international community, navigate that moral complexity? When their own future is unclear, how can they design the human future? ‘Horizons’ could be the sixth thematic area in this conference. ‘Horizons’ is closely linked to ‘Conscience’; the former involving looking outwards and the latter involving looking inwards.

Starting our 2006 activities, once more we would like to express our satisfaction to have you with us participating in this journal through your reading and collaborating with articles that contribute for the enrichment of this publication day by day. This year, several subjects that started to be investigated on previous years, got relevance since the development of more specific researches provide continuity to theoretical and methodological studies. We begin with three articles and one report of experience in the Thematic Area Librarianship & Information Science, when the evolution of the use of libraries in several knowledge areas is dicussed, as well as its influence in the information and knowledge transfer, that demand acquisition of informational competences by users in order to use the resources available in libraries. OBJECTIVE: To identify thematic area networks and institutional co-authorship networks in the initial development of the CT, to recognize their characteristics in order to demonstrate the importance of interaction in a health innovation. METHODS: The method proposed by the researchers at the University of Manchester and thematic area studies was used. The databases used were ISI-Web of Science (ISI-WoS) and SCOPUS. The pioneer article was located and the literature limited to subsequent years was systematically reviewed. Excel Node XL, Pajek wiki and Ucinet software were used for data processing. RESULTS: Thematic areas and institutional co-authorship networks were obtained in the early years of CT development. Multiple types of interactions are evident. CONCLUSION: The success of the process of invention, innovation and diffusion in the development of CT required the interaction of many disciplines (medicine, physics and engineering) and institutions (University hospitals, Universities, companies, Research centers and scientific communication media). The study of the thematic areas and SNA (Social Networks Analysis) allow to know the processes of invention and innovation and identify new fields of research.

This article provides a detailed analysis of character construction in the fifth century passio Caeciliae (Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina 1495 – 1495a – 1496). Our analysis sets out to challenge the general assumption that character construction in the late antique passions can correctly be described in terms of stereotypes. The passio Caeciliae appeals to and inverts reader expectations based upon traditional patterns in erotic narrative. We also argue that it individuates the different characters (Caecilia and her fellow martyrs) by documenting one specific area of their representation, namely rhetorical ability. In this thematic area, Caecilia is set apart from her husband Valerianus: unlike him, she displays elaborate rhetorical aptitude which allows her to obtain the dominant position in the marriage and to achieve her aims. But the art of rhetoric is also a skill that can be learned as is shown by the character of Valerianus whose rhetorical approach changes in the course of the passion. Our analysis suggests that this passion from a literary point of view constitutes a more interesting text than is generally assumed.

The regional context of smart specialization continues to be in the focus of academic discussions as the innovative potential of regions in Bulgaria is being determined. The aim of the present work is to identify innovative practices in one of the leading thematic areas – “Healthy living industry and biotechnologies” during the period of 2014-2019 in a selected region. The object of research is the region of Yambol listed in the National Strategy for Smart Specialization in the Republic of Bulgaria as a promising region in the thematic area “Healthy living industry and biotechnologies”. We have applied methods of regional economic analysis based on objective statistical data. Regional analysis has been complemented with a survey to reflect the subjective viewpoint of stakeholder representatives. The survey and the analysis of the collected information prove the presence of potential in the region of Yambol for expanding organic production in the food industry and generating “green energy” in the energetics sector.
