Accurate mapping of open-pit mine areas is a prerequisite for the efficient resource management of extractive companies, but also detailed mapping is a requirement for public administrations, especially regarding the monitoring of restored areas. In previous works, our team has contributed to a better knowledge of the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) technologies for soil/vegetation restoration monitoring purposes, and in this work, we present a novel protocol to support combined interests of both private companies and governmental agencies. We introduce a case study in which we show the capability of multispectral sensors onboard of a low-weight multicopter to describe land cover typologies in restored areas (such as grass, scrubs, trees, topsoil and mine spoils) by applying remote sensing and GIS techniques. Moreover, we assess the capability of digital terrain models (Digital Elevation Model, Digital Surface Model, Digital Slope Model) derived from photogrammetric techniques, to provide useful and fast topographic information for the proper management of open-pit mine exploitation and restoration. By applying these techniques, we present a cost-effective workflow adequate to monitor land cover dynamics in restored areas, but also volumetric changes in stockpiles, waste dumps and extraction faces. This combined approach, supporting both environmental and industrial needs, aims to enhance the collaboration between sectors, establishing synergies, reducing costs by sharing knowledge, and adding transparency to their relation.

The concept of a system of continuous improvement of the production process of open-pit coal mining, the structure of which is a mutually agreed contours of the organization of reproduction, adaptation and development, is justified. It is shown that the competitiveness of a coal mining enterprise depends on the development and level of use of its tangible, intan-gible and intangible assets. It is proved that the formation of a system of continuous im-provement of the production process, based on the development and effective use of the com-pany's assets, can increase its competitiveness and investment attractiveness

A semicontinuous process system consisting of a single-bucket excavator, truck, crushing station, and belt conveyor is the main coal mining process system of a large-scale hard coal open-pit mine. Through analyzing the coal mining production process, the key issues of coal mining truck flow optimization are obtained. Statistical method of using triangular fuzzy numbers analyzes the key time parameters of coal mining truck flow. Taking one shift, the minimum expected value of number of trucks, as the objective function, the fuzzy expectation of the coal mining semicontinuous process system is established with the constraints of the truck flow continuity at the loading and unloading point, the production capacity of the electric shovel, the production capacity of the crushing station, coal quality, and coal mining production tasks. The truck flow planning model is solved using particle swarm intelligence algorithm. The simulation results show that the result of truck flow planning can effectively reduce truck number, truck dispatching number, transportation costs, and truck queuing. The fuzzy expected truck flow planning model established by the study is suitable for solving the problem of optimizing and matching the production capacity in the process which links electric shovel, truck, and crushing station. It can effectively improve the production efficiency of electric shovel mining, truck transportation, and crushing station.

Discovering the variation of an open-pit mine in vertical, horizontal, and temporal dimensions as well to characterize the stages and the trends of the exploitation are indispensable tasks which provide information supporting decision making and planning for sustainable development of the mining industry. Remote sensing technique with the advantages of multi-spatial, multi-spectral, multi-temporal resolution is a promising solution to meet the  information requirement. This study proposes an approach of coupling the high-resolution satellite images and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) data to observe the variation of Tan An open rocky mine during its lifetime. Five satellite images with the resolution of 0.5 m acquired in 2006, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and two ortho-images with 0.034 m resolution constructed from UAV photos captured in 2019, 2020 are used to make land cover maps. The analysis of land cover changes discovers 3 stages of open-pit mine exploitation consisting of unprompted exploitation, exploiting outbreak and stable exploitation corresponding to the changes in the mine. Besides, two Digital Surface Models (DSM) constructed by UAV photos are compared to calculate the elevation and volume changes. The assessment of the correlation between elevation change and land cover change indicates that the mineral exploitation is in the vertical range from 645 m to 660 m, and the exploitation trend is following the horizontal expansion rather than the deep excavation. Additionally, this experiment results in 79,422 m3 of mineral taken from the mine, and 34,022 m3 of soil used for the restoration within a year from June 2019 to June 2020.

Chernogosky open pit mine integrates truck-and-shovel system of mining with overburden rehandling to internal dump with a set of walking excavators for rehandling of overburden to mined-out area of the pit. It is possible to improve efficiency of stripping in the conditions of Chernogorsky OPM by reducing percentage of stripping with more expensive handling system. The relevant research and solutions to this effect are presented in this article. Comparative characterization of mining conditions and parameters of mining systems applied is given for open pit mines Chernogorsky, Turnui, Nazarovsky, Vostochno-Beisky and Izykh. The comparative analysis points at the need to account for difficulty of mining and process sites in comparison of equipment productivity. High concentration of mining machines, which is conditioned by narrow mining front and simultaneous operation of five faces, as well as blasting operation implemented every 1-2 days, are recognized as the main constraints of excavator capacity in mining with direct dumping in Chernogorsky open pit mine. The management and engineering solutions implemented in the mine and resulted in higher efficiency of draglines are described.

Uniform schedule maintenance of mining and haulage machines is one of the key conditions for increasing productive time of maintenance personnel and decreasing monthly average servicing time. Currently, Russian mines infringe regulated maintenance schedule aimed to improve output per shift. The loss of time of maintenance personnel and equipment as a consequence maintenance irregularity is never assessed. This article presents assessment results on maintenance schedule uniformity in terms of dump trucks BelAZ-7513 and BelAZ-7530 at Chernogorsky open pit mine, SUEK-Khakassia. A variant of calculation of time loss owing to inconsistent maintenance schedule for dump trucks is proposed. The loss of time by maintenance personnel and by mining/haulage machines is assessed. The fleet of dump trucks BelAZ-7513 and BelAZ-7530 is analyzed depending on overtime of operation between maintenance periods. It is recommended to improve uniformity of maintenance schedule for mining and haulage equipment.

Investigation of failures is one of the critical activities of mining and haulage equipment operability assurance in mining. Maintaining failure investigation at the required quality level, it is possible to identify provisions, rules and procedures that should be revised or changed, operation conditions that should be improved, additional personnel training, if required, etc. Investigation of failures in mines is under responsibility of machine men and electricians of maintenance and operation services. In reality, factory management and setup for production condition weak concernment of these workers in quality investigation aimed at finding of sources of equipment failures. This article describes real-life results achieved in development and use of maintenance service operation, technology and management monitoring. The requirements are substantiated for quality improvement in failure cause finding and removal in mining and haulage equipment at Chernogorsky open pit mine, SUEK-Khakassia. Causes of the present quality of failure investigation by machine men of Chernogorsky Repair and Engineering Works and Chernogorsky open pit mine are revealed. The proposed recommended practices will improve quality of mining and haulage equipment failure investigation.
