Study of Occurrence of Cataract and their Surgical Management in Dogs

Background: Present study investigated the occurrence of cataract in dogs presented to the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC) and Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology under Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar during a period of four months. During the study period, a total number of 3847 canine cases were registered at TVCC, out of which 23 cases registered under the RKVY project for different types of ophthalmic affections. There were only eight canine cataract cases with overall prevalence of 0.2% among total canines presented to TVCC and 34.78% of total canines presented with some sorts of ophthalmic affections. Methods: Menace reflex, pupillary light reflex, maze test, obstacle test, catoptrics test, Schirmer’s tear test (STT), Schiotz tonometry, Slit lamp bio microscopy and fundus examination -using indirect ophthalmoscope (IO) and fundus camera, were carried out in all the cases studied. Result: Occurrence of cataract was higher in Spitz (50%). Males had more incidences (62.5%) of cataract. The ages of the dogs were less than 10 years. B mode ultra-sonographic (USG) examination revealed increased echogenecity of lens in all cataract affected dogs while corneal opacification was found in two cases. Cataract was extracted by phaco-emulsification in three dogs and by small incision cataract surgery (SICS) technique in one dog.

Condensing lens is a lens used as an auxiliary lens in indirect instruments to examines the fundus. This lens is used with binocular indirect ophthalmoscope and slit-lamp biomicroscope to reach a stereopsis image of fundus. Optical principle of condensing lens is to make the eye in myopic condition, so it can producesa real, aerial, inverted and reversed image. This lens was placed between the instruments and the eye of the patient which located closer to patient’s eye. Optimalized position of the lens can produce a good fundus image. Condensing lens have so many power of dioptre that each power produces different magnification and field of view. High powered lenses produces wider field of view than low powered ones. High powered lens can also used in patient with small dilated pupil and shorter distance of examination. Low powered lenses offer more magnification. Fundus examination with binocular indirect ophthalmoscope and slit-lamp biomicroscope have purpose to produces stereopsis image because of the binocularity system. These two instruments have each advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of binocular indirect ophthalmoscope are a portable instrument, relatively can be used in uncooperative patient and it can be used with scleral indentation to reach more peripheral view of the fundus. Meanwhile slit-lamp biomicroscope has the advantages to offer more magnification and flexible illumination system. With higher powered lens use in biomicroscope, it also give advantages in shorter distance of examination and wider field of view.

Background: India being a developing country, causes of Blindness in India will be different than developed countries. There are 10million (37 million in world) blind people in India today in which 80 percent if taken care in time, completely preventable. AIM:  To evaluate sex predominance, prevalence of different types of lens induced Glaucoma and its visual outcomes in patients attending government general hospital, kadapa. MATERIAL AND METHODS:  This prospective study was conducted in Ophthalmology department of government general hospital, kadapa, Andhra Pradesh from January 2018 to June 2019. 32 Patients visiting the Hospital with classical symptoms of Lens induced Glaucoma were taken into study. RESULTS:  A Total of 32 patients were taken into this study in which 12(37.50%) were male patients and 20(62.50%) were Female. Among different LIG patients maximum patients had Phacomorphic Glaucoma accounting 62.50% (20 patients) and Phacolytic Glaucoma 34.37% (11 patients). AbstractKeratitis is the main cause of corneal blindness worldwide. Most vision loss caused by keratitis can be avoidable via early detection and treatment. The diagnosis of keratitis often requires skilled ophthalmologists. However, the world is short of ophthalmologists, especially in resource-limited settings, making the early diagnosis of keratitis challenging. Here, we develop a deep learning system for the automated classification of keratitis, other cornea abnormalities, and normal cornea based on 6,567 slit-lamp images. Our system exhibits remarkable performance in cornea images captured by the different types of digital slit lamp cameras and a smartphone with the super macro mode (all AUCs>0.96). The comparable sensitivity and specificity in keratitis detection are observed between the system and experienced cornea specialists. Our system has the potential to be applied to both digital slit lamp cameras and smartphones to promote the early diagnosis and treatment of keratitis, preventing the corneal blindness caused by keratitis.

Purpose. To assess safety and efficacy of temporal manual small incision cataract surgery (SICS) in context to visual outcome, astigmatism, and complications. Methods. This involved sclerocorneal tunnel, capsulotomy and hydrodissection. The incision was made with number 11 disposable surgical blade (costing Indian Rs. 2.50, $0.05). Nucleus extraction was done by phaco-sandwich method with the help of vectis and dialer. Posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation was done according to biometric findings. A record of intraoperative and postoperative complications was made. The final postoperative assessment of astigmatism was done with spectacle correction on the 45th day as per the refraction findings. Results. Two thousand eyes were operated by temporal, manual small incision sutureless technique. Uncorrected visual acuity was ≥6/18 in 1636 (81.7%) patients on the first postoperative day, in 1652 (82.6%) patients at 2 weeks, and in 1732 (88.6%) patients at 6 weeks. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≥6/18 was achieved in 1868 (93.4%) patients at 6 weeks, with 46 (2.3%) having BCVA <6/60, 24 (1.2%) of whom had preexisting retinal pathology. At 6 weeks, 1876 (93.8%) eyes had with-the-rule and 134 (6.2%) against-the-rule astigmatism (mean 0.7±1.25 D). Iris prolapse was noted in 3 (0.15%), wound leak in 3 (0.15%), and transient corneal edema in 136 (6.8%) eyes. Average surgery time was 6 minutes. Conclusions. Temporal SICS with number 11 disposable surgical blade and nucleus delivery by phaco-sandwich method gave excellent outcome with minimal astigmatism and low complication rate at economic cost.
