Through an analysis of data from 152 widowed and 62 never-married elderly residents of southern Ontario, this paper examines the relationship between social support and well-being, measured in terms of morale. The data indicate that while perceived social support is related to morale, particularly among the widowed, measures of available support are not directly associated with well-being among the widowed and never-married elderly. Indeed, reliance upon others for support is, in some circumstances, associated with decreased well-being among the elderly.

Introduction: Most elderly people are at risk of chronic diseases and their complications and problems and inadequate social support, especially among low-income groups, can affect their lives. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between mental health and perceived social support in the elderly referred to selected hospitals of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran. Method: This study is a descriptive-correlational research that was performed in selected hospitals affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran. The samples were the elderly referred to the mentioned hospitals who were included in the study by available sampling method and based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria from the study population. Data were collected through the "General Health Questionnaire"(GHQ-28)  and the "Zimet Perceived Social Support Multidimensional Scale" and data analyzed using SPSS statistical package version 20. Results: The results showed that the mean of general health was 37.64( social dysfunction with an average of 10.30±4.24 and physical problems with an average of 10.23±4.54 were the most common psychological problems in the elderly)and perceived social support was 54.56, which indicates that the elderly have moderate mental health and perception of social support. Findings also indicated that there is an inverse and significant relationship between mental health and perceived social support of the elderly (r = 0.624). In other words, the lower a person's perception of social support is associated with the greater risk to their mental health. Conclusions: The results showed that social dysfunction and physical problems(two subscales of general health) had been the most common psychological problems in the elderly. In addition, perceived social support from family, friends, and others in the elderly has been moderate.  Therefore, the mental health of the elderly should be considered and awareness of families and other people involved with the elderly should be given priority for stronger emotional ties with the elderly and increase of social support. ABSTRACT Objectives: Issues concerning the association among attachment anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation among the elderly have rarely been explored. The present study investigated the relationship among attachment anxiety, depression and perceived support concerning suicidal ideation among older people. Design: Cross-sectional study Setting: Tertiary care settings Participants: The authors recruited 191 elderly patients from 10 tertiary care settings in Thailand Measurements: Participants provided data on their suicidal ideation and suicidal attempt using Module C of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Their attachment anxiety was assessed using the revised Experience of Close Relationship questionnaire (ECR-R-18), while their level of depression was investigated using the Geriatric Depression Scale. In addition, their perception of being supported was ascertained using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. We performed two mediation analyses and moderation analyses separately using the product of coefficients approach. First, we created a mediation model to examine the role of attachment anxiety and depression on suicidal ideation. Second, a moderated mediation model was created to explore the relationship of perceived social support as a moderator of depression. Results: We found that depression significantly mediated the association between attachment anxiety and suicidal ideation. The association between depression and suicidal ideation was moderated by the level of perceived social support. Conclusion: Findings of this study may broaden our understanding of how suicidal ideation develops among the elderly and further stimulate future research exploring the interaction of positive and negative factors of suicidality among the elderly. Implications of the findings were also discussed.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the association of perceived social support (PSS) and depression in middle and older aged people. A random sample of 126 elderly persons, age between 40 years to 75 years, were selected from different areas of Karachi. A demographic data sheet was administered along with study scales. To explore the relationship, correlation coefficient and linear regression were applied. Findings revealed a significant negative relationship between perceived social support and depression (p<.000) in middle and older-aged adults and in male and female middle and older-aged adults, respectively. Further, the analysis revealed that PSS has the potential to bring .09%, .10%, and .06% change in depression among the whole sample and among elderly males and females. Provision and utilization of adequate support systems for the elderly can be beneficial in treating emotional problems and enhance the well-being of this population.
