Rehabilitation clients should play a major role in planning and implementing their own programs. This includes direct participation in selecting a rehabilitation center or workshop which meets the client's needs as jointly determined by the client and counselor. In order to actively participate in this process, the client has to be provided with objective information about available resources. The traditional method for providing this information usually consists of verbalizations about facility programs and servces on the part of the counselor. However, in other areas of education and learning, audiovisual media has been shown to be a much more effective means for transmitting information. It is the authors' contention that the use of audiovisuals provides a valuable technique for orienting clients to the programs and services of individual rehabilitation agencies. As a result of being directly involved in choosing a facility or program, it is hypothesized that the benefits to individual clients resulting from services will increase. It is suggested that further study be undertaken to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of this approach to client orientation to rehabilitation facilities.

Life story work has long been established as a highly effective means of helping children separated from their birth families to come to terms with a history of abandonment, rejection and loss. However, the traditional method of using photos, drawings, writings and memorabilia from the child's past to create a life story book may not always be possible or appropriate. Juliet Harper presents four case studies in which, for various reasons, it was necessary to pursue alternative methods of life story work, for instance through play and the exploration of dreams. She underlines the importance of truthfulness, sensitivity and flexibility on the part of the therapist, and the need to constantly watch out for clues from the child. In following their lead, she asserts, the most constructive path towards rebuilding their sense of self will be found.

Current trends in vocational rehabilitation (VR) increasingly value career pathways and career advancement as important components for success. Simultaneously, employers and businesses have great needs for retaining and advancing incumbent workers in order to better meet their workforce demands. This article describes the Career Pathways Advancement Project (CPAP), the first state VR agency use of the upskill/backfill model for advancing former clients in specific career clusters in Nebraska VR by providing them access to additional training, certification, or specialized skills necessary to advance within that career sector. The model also provides access to entry-level jobs in the same businesses for current VR clients by “backfilling” the vacated positions left by the worker who is advancing. The upskill/backfill model appears to be an effective means for advancing former VR clients in their careers and providing substantial gains in income and employer-provided benefits. The model may require additional modifications in order to better serve new clients with backfill positions that were created by those who successfully advanced. Policy considerations for embedding this model in VR are addressed in light of evolving workplace dynamics and employer needs.

This study examined some predictor variables for positive outcome with a state vocational rehabilitation agency. Referrals to the agency from VA Counseling Psychology were analyzed to develop guidelines for identifying clients with good probability for positive outcome in their vocational rehabilitation planning. All subjects had a history of substance-abuse treatment at the Houston VA Medical Center. Analyses suggested a number of factors are relevant when assessing potential for successful vocational rehabilitation. Provision of drug-free housing, recent work history, and discharge status from a substance-abuse program were identified as relevant factors.

Abstract After the Maidan events in Kiev and the annexation of Crimea in March 2014, discussions in Latvia expanded regarding the extent to which the Russian-speaking population in Latvia, whose daily information is obtained mainly from Russia’s TV channels, can get well-balanced and objective information. Opinion polls showed that a large proportion (41%) of the non-Latvians supported the annexation of Crimea and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin’s policy (SKDS 2014a). The aim of this article is to analyse the structure of the audiovisual media in the Russian language and media usage habits of the Russian-speaking audience using secondary and primary data. And thereby assess whether diversified information is available in the Russian language to this societal group. The research results show that the Russian-speaking population in Latvia does not feel a need for additional information channels, because they believe that the variety of information obtained from Russia’s TV and radio channels is sufficient.
