This study aim is to know the effect of silica composition on the absorption of electromagnetic waves in the composite of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR)/silica. Silica raw materials have been synthesized from the results of rice husk ash extraction. The results of the analysis phase and elementary respective using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) show that the extraction of silica has an amorphous phase with a high purity. This silica powders are filler material acts as an electromagnetic waves absorber material and combined with the UPR as a matrix to form a composite. Silica powder varied with several compositions in this composite. The observation of scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the silica particles have been distributed evenly in the UPR matrix. Meanwhile the results of testing the absorption of electromagnetic waves at frequency range of 8 GHz - 12 GHz using a vector network analyzer (VNA) show that the addition of silica composition have significant effect on the absorption of electromagnetic waves. The more the silica content in the UPR matrix causes the absorption of electromagnetic waves more increasing. It was concluded that the presence of silica can improve the absorption performance of electromagnetic waves in composite UPR/silica. The polymer modification of the concrete has been performed successfully for last more than 85 years. A number of polymer-based admixtures are being used to alter the properties of concrete to be used for repair and rehabilitation of concrete. The initiated research focuses on a new approach of development of polymer-modified concrete with appropriate replacement of cement with rice husk ash (RHA) produced by the incineration of rice husk. This paper presents the optimum possible replacement of cement with rice husk ash by not compromising on mechanical properties of concrete and addition of optimum proportion of re-dispersible polymer powder (RPP).The Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted to verify silica content and amorphous silica in RHA. The replacement of cement with RHA was done with 1% to 15%. The significant improvement in compressive strength with 10 % replacement of cement with RHA is obvious in the results. Further, on inclusion of various % age dosages of RPP in the optimum mix of rice husk ash concrete, the visible improvement in the strength, particularly in the tensile strength is achieved with 2.5 % (of weight of cement) inclusion of re-dispersible polymer powder.

Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) modified unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) are mostly used for hulls, decks, and bathroom facilities. Main advantages of these polymers over orthophthalic or isophthalic polyesters are their relatively low shrinking, reduced styrene emission, lower cost, and fast curing in thin layers. On the other hand, once cured, these materials are more brittle and have lower glass transition temperatures and lower chemical resistance due to their different chemical constitutions. DCPD UPRs with standard grades are usually produced with high-quality DCPD (over a 85% purity) using the so-called “water process”, a synthesis consisting of two reaction steps. An adduct of maleic anhydride with DCPD is firstly formed with water, and then, it reacts with the other esterification monomers such as acids and glycols. DCPD raw materials used in this study were prepared by a unique distillation process developed by ORLEN Unipetrol and University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague. This technology allows producing a wide spectrum of DCPD quality by adjusting the content of another norbornene dimer: methyl dicyclopentadiene (MeDCPD). The influence of MeDCPD on unsaturated polyester properties was examined throughout this study. It has been discovered that in low concentrations, MeDCPD had a slight influence on flexural mechanical properties whereas its concentrations up to 65% led to a softer and brittle material. Nevertheless, by adjusting the unsaturation degree, it has been shown that MeDCPD may be successfully implanted in UPR formulation.

Rice husk is a form of agricultural biomass that provides an abundant silicon dioxides source. This study use rice husk ash as a material to prepare silica. Silica powder has been synthesized by the refluxing of rice husk ash with HCl 1,2 and 3 M at different time (60 and 120 min.) and subsequently adjusting the pH using 1 M. NaOH. The silicon dioxide extraction yield reached 85% and was effect by concentration of HCl solution and reaction time. The structure of the obtained silica powder were characterized by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), CIE L*a*b* (Visible spectrophotometer) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The highest purity of silica sample were 98.7% SiO2, CIE L*a*b* = 94.79 +0.48 +1.24, ∆E ≈ 3.28 (white power) and 2Ɵ = 22o (silica). Particle had a uniform size less than 3 μm. The objective of the next study will applied synthesized silica that enhances the print quality of the printing substrates.
