Malware overview reports are valuable information to understand threats behavior and develop proper countermeasures. Currently, most of these studies are focused on either fine-grained, individual sample analysis or coarse-grained landscapes. On the one hand, only the first allows professionals to handle specific security breaches. On the other hand, only the second allows understanding threat scenario as a whole. We claim that a complete security treatment is only possible when combining both approaches. Therefore, this work presents an analysis of a large malware dataset, showing the distinctions between coarse-grained and fine-grained analysis results. It presents both a general threat scenario based on coarse-grained results as well as it details fine-grained results to identify particular malicious constructions to anticipate incident response of future threats.

In this paper we present current work on the design and validation of a linguistically-motivated annotation model of modality in English and Spanish in the context of the MULTINOT project. Our annotation model captures four basic modal meanings and their subtypes, on the one hand, and provides a fine-grained characterisation of the syntactic realisations of those meanings in English and Spanish, on the other. We validate the modal tagset proposed through an agreement study performed on a bilingual sample of four hundred sentences extracted from original texts of the MULTINOT corpus, and discuss the difficult cases encountered in the annotation experiment. We also describe current steps in the implementation of the proposed scheme for the large-scale annotation of the bilingual corpus using both automatic and manual procedures.

Mathematical models of biochemical networks can largely facilitate the comprehension of the mechanisms at the basis of cellular processes, as well as the formulation of hypotheses that can be tested by means of targeted laboratory experiments. However, two issues might hamper the achievement of fruitful outcomes. On the one hand, detailed mechanistic models can involve hundreds or thousands of molecular species and their intermediate complexes, as well as hundreds or thousands of chemical reactions, a situation generally occurring in rule-based modeling. On the other hand, the computational analysis of a model typically requires the execution of a large number of simulations for its calibration or to test the effect of perturbations. As a consequence, the computational capabilities of modern Central Processing Units can be easily overtaken, possibly making the modeling of biochemical networks a worthless or ineffective effort. To the aim of overcoming the limitations of the current state-of-the-art simulation approaches, we present in this paper FiCoS, a novel “black-box” deterministic simulator that effectively realizes both a fine-grained and a coarse-grained parallelization on Graphics Processing Units. In particular, FiCoS exploits two different integration methods, namely, the Dormand–Prince and the Radau IIA, to efficiently solve both non-stiff and stiff systems of coupled Ordinary Differential Equations. We tested the performance of FiCoS against different deterministic simulators, by considering models of increasing size and by running analyses with increasing computational demands. FiCoS was able to dramatically speedup the computations up to 855×, showing to be a promising solution for the simulation and analysis of large-scale models of complex biological processes.

In this article I examine the ways in which the competitive reality television franchiseRuPaul’s Drag Race(RPDR), immensely popular withWestern LGBTQ+-communities, can be considered a product of what Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer identified as the Culture Industry (CI). On the one hand,this allows for a concrete application of the CI-thesis and the exploration of possible lines of critique concerning RPDR and its effects on its viewership, while,on the other hand,it is an opportunity to evaluate the aptitude of the CI-thesis for critical analysis in the 21st century. While the concepts related to the CI-thesis turn out to be remarkably productive, its latent totalitarian and pessimistic framework tends to skew any analysis. This may warrant supplementing its coarse-grained perspective with a more fine-grained empirical investigation

More generally, what facts are marked by instances ofS believes (A→C)?In a sense the answer is obious: beliefs are so marked. Yet that bromide leads directly to competing schools of thought. And the reason is simple.Common-sense thinks of belief two ways. Sometimes it sees it as a three-part affair. When so viewed either you believe, disbelieve, or suspend judgment. This take on belief is coarse-grained. It says belief has three flavours: acceptance, rejection, neither. But it's not the only way common-sense thinks of belief. Sometimes it's more subtle: ‘How strong is your faith?’ can be apposite between believers. That signals an important fact. Ordinary practice also treats belief as a fine-grained affair. It speaks of levels of confidence. It admits degrees of belief. It contains a fine-grained take as well. There are two ways belief is seen in everyday life. One is coarse-grained. The other is fine-grained.

While YouTube has become a dominant actor in the global media system, the relationship between platform, advertisers, and content creators has seen a series of conflicts around the question of monetization. Our paper draws on a critical media industries perspective to investigate the relationship between YouTube’s evolving platform strategies on the one side and content creators’ tactical adaptations on the other. This concerns the search for alternative revenue streams as well as content and referencing optimization seeking to grow audiences and algorithmic visibility. Drawing on an exhaustive sample (n=153.770) of “elite” channels (more than 100.000 subscribers) and their full video history (n=138.340.337), we parse links in video descriptions to investigate the appearance and spread of crowdfunding platforms like Patreon, but also of affiliate links, merchandise stores, or e-commerce websites like Etsy. We analyze the evolution of video length and posting frequency in response to platform policy as well as visibility tactics such as metadata and category optimization, keyword stuffing, or title phrasing. Taken together, these elements provide a broad picture of “industrialization” on YouTube, that is, of the ways creators seek to develop their channels into media businesses. While this contribution cannot replace more qualitative, in-depth research into particular channels or channel groups, we hope to provide a representative picture of YouTube’s elite channels and their quest for visibility and success from their beginnings up to early 2020.

This chapter summarizes the book’s central claims and looks at paths for future work on the applied ethics of artistic creation and ethical criticism. It suggests the need for two parallel strands of inquiry: On the one hand, as the term “applied ethics” suggests, there is a need for a finer-grained understanding of both the artistic and ethical contexts of artistic creation—an understanding that will need to be informed by research across a number of fields, including anthropology, art history, and moral psychology. On the other hand, whatever details of that context are revealed by this fine-grained analysis, there will be a more abstract conceptual challenge about how to reconcile the norms of that art-historical and ethical context with those in currency in the art-historical and ethical context from which one is judging the work. So, the parallel path of inquiry is in metaethics.

This chapter details the first waves of large-scale organized mobilization that unfolded across the territories that came to comprise Việtnam. It draws heavily on the discursive tradition and sociological infrastructure of Sinographic cosmopolitanism, on the one hand, and on various forms of support and solidarity from neighboring China, on the other. The chapter then shifts to the Cần Vương insurrection, which did not provide the bases for sustained popular mobilization or systematic command and coordination across Annam and Tonkin, enabling a French counterinsurgency campaign to achieve “pacification” within a few short years. The chapter also introduces a new movement led by Phan Bội Châu called the Viêt-Nam Duy-Tân Hội (Việtnam Modernization Society), in which he started to assemble a clandestine network of supporters not only in Annam and Tonkin but also in Cochinchina. Ultimately, the chapter discusses the emergence of a new revolutionary network established by Nguyễn Ái Quốc known as the Việt Nam Thanh Niên Cách Mệnh Đồng Chí Hội (Revolutionary Youth League of Việt Nam), or Thanh Niên for short.

As a powerful tool in optimization, particle swarm optimizers have been widely applied to many different optimization areas and drawn much attention. However, for large-scale optimization problems, the algorithms exhibit poor ability to pursue satisfactory results due to the lack of ability in diversity maintenance. In this paper, an adaptive multi-swarm particle swarm optimizer is proposed, which adaptively divides a swarm into several sub-swarms and a competition mechanism is employed to select exemplars. In this way, on the one hand, the diversity of exemplars increases, which helps the swarm preserve the exploitation ability. On the other hand, the number of sub-swarms adaptively changes from a large value to a small value, which helps the algorithm make a suitable balance between exploitation and exploration. By employing several peer algorithms, we conducted comparisons to validate the proposed algorithm on a large-scale optimization benchmark suite of CEC 2013. The experiments results demonstrate the proposed algorithm is effective and competitive to address large-scale optimization problems.

This paper raises once more the question of the relationship between philosophy on the one hand and common sense on the other. More particularly, it is concerned with the role which common sense can play in passing judgment on the rational acceptability (or otherwise) of large-scale hypotheses in natural philosophy and the cosmological part of metaphysics. There are, as I see it, three stages through which the relationship has passed in the course of the twentieth century. There is the era of G. E. Moore, the Quine–Feyerabend period, and now a new and modest vindication of common sense is emerging in the work of Jerry Fodor.

The present paper explores the effects of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) on the properties of WC-Co cemented carbides. The investigation involved four different cemented carbide (CC) grades. Two of them were coarse-grained WC with grain sizes larger than 6 μm and binder fractions of 10 and 15 wt. %. The other two were fine-grained with WC grains of 0.5-0.8 μm and the same binder fractions of 10 and 15 wt. %. Their specimens were ground and polished to prepare them for DCT. In each specimen, one half of this polished surface was used for testing the properties of the CC before cryogenic treatment. The post-DCT properties were then determined on the other half. Properties of the cemented carbides prior to and after DCT were studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, hardness testing according to Vickers scale followed by calculation of fracture toughness KIC and a ball-on-disk test of the wear resistance of the surface. One of the findings was that cryogenic treatment led to a decrease in residual stresses and to lower fracture toughness KIC in the CC.
