AA5154 aluminum alloy wall was built using EBAM where the wall’s top layers were alloyed by depositing and then remelting a Mo powder-bed with simultaneous transfer of aluminum alloy from the AA5154 wire. The powder-beds with different concentrations of Mo such as 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 g/layer were used to obtain composite AA5154/Mo samples. All samples were characterized by inhomogeneous structures composed of as-deposited AA5154 matrix with coarse unreacted Mo articles and intermetallic compounds (IMC) such as Al12Mo, Al5Mo, Al8Mo3, Al18Mg3Mo2 which formed in the vicinity of these Mo particles. The IMC content increased with the Mo powder-bed concentrations. The AA5154 matrix grains away from the Mo particles contained Al-Fe grain boundary precipitates. Mo-rich regions in the 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 g/layer Mo samples had maximum microhardness at the level of 2300, 2600, 11,500 and 9000 GPa, respectively. Sliding pin-on-steel disk test showed that wear of A5154/Mo composite reduced as compared to that of as-deposited AA5154 due to composite structure, higher microhardness as a well as tribooxidation of Al/Mo IMCs and generation of mechanically mixed layers containing low shear strength Mo8O23 and Al2(MoO4)3 oxides.

In recent years, with the development of eco-friendly lubricants, different vegetable oils have been studied and found to improve the overall tribological performance compared to petroleum-based oils. Being one of the commonly used vegetable oils, canola oil has become popular due to its non-toxicity and low cost. However, this bio-lubricant lacks tribological performance compared to petroleum-based oils. To improve its performance, sustainable solid additives such as graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have recently gained the researcher’s attention. While incorporating nanomaterials in the oil as additives is a promising way to improve base oil’s performance, the excessive use of nanoparticles can introduce undesirable effects. This study investigated canola oil’s tribological performances with the addition of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 wt.% GNP and 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 wt.% hBN nanoparticles. The dynamic viscosities of these seven settings showed higher viscosity for GNP-incorporated oils compared to that with hBN. The boundary lubrication regime was targeted for the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear analyses during each pin on the disk test. It was observed that for the GNP, 1.5 wt.% provided the minimum COF (52% less than base oil), whereas, for the hBN, 1.0 wt.% provided the lowest (40% less than base oil) values. Based on these insights, three nano lubricant mixtures were formulated by incorporating both GNP and hBN settings in different ratios. These mixtures provided an optimum positive synergy by reducing 56% friction and 90% wear compared to the base oil. These percentage values were significantly more compared to both GNP and hBN based lubricants in their individual settings. These improvements in the mixture were due to a composite film formed which protected the interacting surfaces and also due to the polishing mechanisms. Therefore, incorporating both these nanoparticles in canola oil could reduce friction and wear and thus help in better energy conservation.

For industrial roller or bush chains, the bush swings relative to the pin at working condition. If proper lubrication is maintained, an elastohydrodynamic lubrication contact is formed between the pin and the bush. In this study, a custom-made pin was used to replace the steel ball of a ball-disk test rig and optical interferometric experiments were carried out to study the effect of pin generatrix on the lubrication performance. The effects of generatrix shape, stroke length and oil supply condition on the lubrication state were explored. It is found that the change of the generatrix has an important influence on the oil film thickness, especially under rare oil supply condition.

Abstract In this paper, we succeeded in obtaining a Ni/SiC nano composite coating using conventional electro deposition by adding different amount of SiC nanoparticles to a nickel-watt bath to be co-deposited. The effect of electro deposition conditions was studied by changing the amount of SiC nanoparticles in the nano composite, and the deposition current density which affects on the participation of SiC nanoparticles in the coating. The morphology and mechanical properties of the electrodeposited nano-composite were studied. The wear behavior of the nano-composite coatings was evaluated on a ball-on-disk test. It was found that the increased micro hardness and wear resistance of the nano-composite coatings increased with increasing content of the SiC nano-particulate in bath.

The following study presents an in situ sensor system which can measure the temperature change of rolling contacts for heavy duty during fluid as well as mixed friction. This thin-film sensor was optimized with regard to its size, spatial resolution, and wear resistance. Extensive tests were carried out with a two-disk test rig and the data of the temperature change were presented. The results show the complex processes within a rolling contact and the strongly interaction of pressure, friction, and temperature development within the contact zone. Due to the detailed sensor and disk characterization, the data are suitable for comparing calculation methods.

This study was conducted to develop a cheap, rapid, and accurate modified combined-disk test (mCDT) approach to detect and differentiate KPC and MBL carbapenemases among clinical carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) isolates and simultaneously distinguish them from carbapenem-susceptible Enterobacterales (CSE) isolates. A total of 163 CRE and 90 third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales isolates were tested using imipenem and meropenem disks and different concentrations of carbapenemase inhibitors. The optimal sensitivity and specificity for detecting KPC carbapenemase were 97.2% and 100%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity for detecting MBL carbapenemase were 100% and 100% with imipenem or meropenem and carbapenemase inhibitors within six hours. The inhibitory zone diameter of 18 mm for imipenem or meropenem disks without inhibitor could distinguish CRE from CSE isolates. Therefore, this mCDT approach may be a useful tool in clinical laboratories to detect CRE isolates and differentiate KPC and MBL producers, which is beneficial for patient management and hospital infection prevention and control.

In this paper, the copper-based nanocomposites with TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) process. The effect of the different amounts of excess copper, in comparison with the stoichiometric ratio (CuO:Ti ratios of 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1), on the phase formation of achieved samples was studied. A thermodynamical study showed that increasing the excess copper powder reduces the adiabatic temperature, which helps the phase formation. The maximum Brinell hardness (89) was obtained for the sample with the CuO:Ti ratio of 1:1. Finally, the wear behavior of the synthesized nanocomposites was evaluated by the pin on disk test, and the variation of friction coefficient and lost weight were measured. The friction coefficient decreased by the formation of phases and distribution of titanium oxide particles during the SHS process in the presence of the stoichiometric ratio of CuO:Ti. Therefore, the wear behavior was improved. The lowest depth of wear trace was measured 0.68 where the ratio of CuO: Ti was 1:1.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is ubiquitous in nature, and may be a causative agent in severe, life-threatening infections. In >60% of cases, β-lactam antibiotics are used in the therapy of P. aeruginosa infections, therefore the emergence of carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa (CRPA) is a significant clinical concern. In this study, phenotypic methods were used to characterize fifty-four (n = 54) P. aeruginosa isolates, which were included based on their suspected non-susceptibility to meropenem. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of meropenem, ceftazidime, cefepime, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, were determined using E-tests, while colistin MICs were determined using broth microdilution. The isolates were subjected to the modified Hodge test (MHT), the modified carbapenem-inactivation method (mCIM) and the imipenem/EDTA combined disk test (CDT). AmpC and efflux pump overexpression was studied using agar plates containing cloxacillin and phenylalanine-arginine β-naphthylamide (PAβN), respectively. Assessment of biofilm-formation was carried out using the crystal violet tube-adherence method. 38.9% of the strains showed meropenem MICs in the resistant range (>8 mg/L). Efflux-pump overexpression and AmpC-hyperproduction was seen in 44.4% and 35.2% of isolates, respectively. 88.8% of the isolates were characterized as strong biofilm-producers. On the other hand, the presence of carbapenemases was suspected in a minority (16.7%) of tested isolates. As safe and effective therapeutic options in carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative infections are severely limited, characterization of these isolates using phenotypic and molecular-based methods is important to provide insights into the epidemiological features of these pathogens.
