Theecondenser is a type of heat exchanger that functions to condense fluid. On steam powermsystems. Thevmain function ofmthe condenser is to convert steam into liquid. The purpose of this study is to determine the value and influence of heat balance, heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop and condenser efficiency.Thewresults offthissstudy indicate that in 2018 thee average heat balance (Q) was obtained at 356,017,533.46 Kj / hour while in 2019 the results of the average heat balance (Q) were 640,293,647,066 Kj / hour, fouling factor was not affect the balance sheet. The average gross heat transfer coefficient (UD) in 2018 amounted to 204,274.25 Kj / hour.m2. C and the average net heat transfer coefficient (UC) was 206,378 Kj / hr.m2. ° C whereas in 2019 the average heat transfer coefficient is obtained by the average gross heat transfer coefficient (UD) of 366,544.07 Kj / jam.m2. ° C and the Clean heat transfer coefficient (UC) is 448,554 Kj / h.m2. ° C.Fouling factor is very influential onnthe heatwtransfer coefficient because the greater the fouling in the tube will result in the inhibition of theeheat transfer rate in the tube, so that the heat transfer coefficient decreases. The pressure drop in 2018 is still within the permissible limits, with an average of 504.28 bars and 2019 of 513.03 bars. The effectiveness of the condenser in 2018 is an average of 23.330 after maintenance has been obtained, the average effectiveness of the condenser in 2019 is 40.743

In order to improve heat transfer performance of conventional segmental baffled shell-and-tube heat exchangers (STHXs), the shell-and-tube heat exchanger with combined helical baffles (CMH-STHX) were invented. In the present study, the CMH-STHX is compared with three other STHXs which were set up with continuous helical baffles (CH-STHX), discontinuous helical baffles (DCH-STHX) and segmental baffles (SG-STHX), by Computational Fluid Dynamics method. The numerical results show that, for the same mass flow rate at the shell side, the overall pressure drop of the CMH-STHX is about 50% and 40% lower than that of SG-STHX and CH-STHX. The heat transfer coefficient of the CMH-STHX is between those of CH-STHX and DCH-STHX and it is 6.3% lower than that of SG-STHX. The heat transfer coefficient under unit pressure drop h/Δp is introduced to evaluate the comprehensive performance of STHXs. The h/Δp of the CMH-STHX is 7.5%, 6.5% and 87.4% higher on average than those of the CH-SHTX, DCH-STHX and SG-STHX. Furthermore, the total heat transfer rate of CMH-STHX is about 25% higher than that of SG-STHX for the same total pressure drop of shell side. Supported by these results, the new heat exchanger (CMH-STHX) may be used to replace the conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger in industrial applications.

In this work, a shell and tube heat exchanger with inclined trefoil-hole baffles (STHX-IT) is proposed, and the numerical simulation is conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics. A shell and tube heat exchanger with segmental baffles (STHX-SG) is also studied for the performance comparison. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of the STHX-IT is averagely lower by 23.89% and 44.19% than those of the STHX-SG, but the heat transfer coefficient per pressure drop is higher by 36.38% on average. Further, the parametric studies of the inclination angle θ, trefoil-hole number n, and baffle cut δ are carried out for the STHX-IT. According to the numerical results, n and δ have more notable influence on shell side performance than θ. In detail, the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop decrease slightly with θ increasing, and the overall performance is approximately equal; both the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop decrease with the respective rising of n and δ, but the comprehensive performance shows a growing trend. Considering the synthetic effects of structural parameters, the multi-objective structure optimization using the genetic algorithm combined with the artificial neural networks is fulfilled. As a result, the Pareto front is obtained to characterize the behaviors of the maximum heat transfer rate and minimum pressure drop. The STHX-IT with the θ = 5.38°, n = 6, and δ = 43% is decided as the optimal solution by the TOPSIS method, whose Q/Δp is 2.34 times as much as that of the original STHX-SG.

AbstractHeat exchangers possess a significant role in energy transmission and energy generation in most industries. In this work, a three-dimensional simulation has been carried out of a shell and tube heat exchanger (STHX) consisting of segmental baffles. The investigation involves using the commercial code of ANSYS CFX, which incorporates the modeling, meshing, and usage of the Finite Element Method to yield numerical results. Much work is available in the literature regarding the effect of baffle cut and baffle spacing as two different entities, but some uncertainty pertains when we discuss the combination of these two parameters. This study aims to find an appropriate mix of baffle cut and baffle spacing for the efficient functioning of a shell and tube heat exchanger. Two parameters are tested: the baffle cuts at 30, 35, 40% of the shell-inside diameter, and the baffle spacing’s to fit 6,8,10 baffles within the heat exchanger. The numerical results showed the role of the studied parameters on the shell side heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop in the shell and tube heat exchanger. The investigation shows an increase in the shell side heat transfer coefficient of 13.13% when going from 6 to 8 baffle configuration and a 23.10% acclivity for the change of six baffles to 10, for a specific baffle cut. Evidence also shows a rise in the pressure drop with an increase in the baffle spacing from the ranges of 44–46.79%, which can be controlled by managing the baffle cut provided.

Turbine blade cooling, a common practice in modern aircraft engines, is accomplished, among other methods, by passing the cooling air through an often serpentine passage in the core of the blade. Furthermore, to enhance the heat transfer coefficient, these passages are roughened with rib-shaped turbulence promoters (turbulators). Considerable data are available on the heat transfer coefficient on the passage surface between the ribs. However, the heat transfer coefficients on the surface of the ribs themselves have not been investigated to the same extent. In small aircraft engines with small cooling passages and relatively large ribs, the rib surfaces comprise a large portion of the passage heat transfer area. Therefore, an accurate account of the heat transfer coefficient on the rib surfaces is critical in the overall design of the blade cooling system. The objective of this experimental investigation was to conduct a series of 13 tests to measure the rib surface-averaged heat transfer coefficient, hrib, in a square duct roughened with staggered 90 deg ribs. To investigate the effects that blockage ratio, e/Dh and pitch-to-height ratio, S/e, have on hrib and passage friction factor, three rib geometries corresponding to blockage ratios of 0.133, 0.167, and 0.25 were tested for pitch-to-height ratios of 5, 7, 8.5, and 10. Comparisons were made between the rib average heat transfer coefficient and that on the wall surface between two ribs, hfloor, reported previously. Heat transfer coefficients of the upstream-most rib and that of a typical rib located in the middle of the rib-roughened region of the passage wall were also compared. It is concluded that: 1 The rib average heat transfer coefficient is much higher than that for the area between the ribs; 2 similar to the heat transfer coefficient on the surface between the ribs, the average rib heat transfer coefficient increases with the blockage ratio; 3 a pitch-to-height ratios of 8.5 consistently produced the highest rib average heat transfer coefficients amongst all tested; 4 under otherwise identical conditions, ribs in upstream-most position produced lower heat transfer coefficients than the midchannel positions, 5 the upstream-most rib average heat transfer coefficients decreased with the blockage ratio; and 6 thermal performance decreased with increased blockage ratio. While a pitch-to-height ratio of 8.5 and 10 had the highest thermal performance for the smallest rib geometry, thermal performance of high blockage ribs did not change significantly with the pitch-to-height ratio.

Abstract In this investigation, the performance of the shell and tube heat exchanger operated with tin nanoparticles-water (SnO2-W) and silver nanoparticles-water (Ag-W) nanofluids was experimentally analyzed. SnO2-W and Ag-W nanofluids were prepared without any surface medication of nanoparticles. The effects of volume concentrations of nanoparticles on thermal conductivity, viscosity, heat transfer coefficient, fiction factor, Nusselt number, and pressure drop were analyzed. The results showed that thermal conductivity of nanofluids increased by 29% and 39% while adding 0.1 wt% of SnO2 and Ag nanoparticles, respectively, due to the unique intrinsic property of the nanoparticles. Further, the convective heat transfer coefficient was enhanced because of improvement of thermal conductivity of the two phase mixture and friction factor increased due to the increases of viscosity and density of nanofluids. Moreover, Ag nanofluid showed superior pressure drop compared to SnO2 nanofluid owing to the improvement of thermophysical properties of nanofluid.

This paper mainly studies the heat transfer performance of backplane micro-channel heat pipes by establishing a steady-state numerical model. Compared with the experimental data, the heat transfer characteristics under different structure parameters and operating parameters were studied, and the change of heat transfer coefficient inside the system, the air outlet temperature of the back plate and the influence of different environmental factors on the heat transfer performance of the system were analyzed. The results show that the overall error between simulation results and experimental data is less than 10%. In the range of the optimal filling rate (FR = 64.40%–73.60%), the outlet temperature at the lowest point and the highest point of the evaporation section is 22.46 °C and 19.60 °C, the temperature difference does not exceed 3 °C, and the distribution gradient in vertical height is small and the air outlet temperature is uniform. The heat transfer coefficient between the evaporator and the condenser is larger than the heat transfer coefficient under the conditions of low and high liquid charge rate. It increases gradually along the flow direction, and decreases gradually with the flow rate of the condenser. When the width of the flat tube of the evaporator increases from 20 mm to 28 mm, the internal pressure drop of the evaporator decreases by 45.83% and the heat exchange increases by 18.34%. When the number of evaporator slices increases from 16 to 24, the heat transfer increases first and then decreases, with an overall decrease of 2.86% and an increase of 87.67% in the internal pressure drop of the evaporator. The inclination angle of the corrugation changes from 30° to 60°, and the heat transfer capacity and pressure drop increase. After the inclination angle is greater than 60°, the heat transfer capacity and resistance decrease. The results are of great significance to system optimization design and engineering practical application.

We have been developing a free convection air cooled heat exchanger without power supply to improve economic efficiency and mechanical reliability. However, this heat exchanger requires a larger installation area than the forced draft type air cooled heat exchanger since a large heating surface is needed to compensate for the small heat transfer by natural convection. Therefore, we have been investigating a heat exchanger consisting of an array of finned tubes and chimney to increase the heat transfer coefficient. Since the heat transfer characteristics of finned tube arrays have not been clarified, we conducted experiments with a finned tube array to determine the relation between the configuration of finned tubes and the heat transfer coefficient of a tube array. The results showed that the average heat transfer coefficient increased with pitch in the vertical direction, and became constant when the pitch was over five times the fin diameter. The average heat transfer coefficient was about 1.4 times higher than that of a single finned tube in free space. The ratio of the average heat transfer coefficient of the finned tube array with chimney to that of a single finned tube was found to be independent of the difference in temperature between the tube surface and air.

In this paper, we present recent experimental results on forced convective heat transfer in novel finned metal foam heat sinks. Experiments were conducted on aluminum foams of 90 percent porosity and pore size corresponding to 5 PPI (200 PPM) and 20 PPI (800 PPM) with one, two, four and six fins, where PPI (PPM) stands for pores per inch (pores per meter) and is a measure of the pore density of the porous medium. All of these heat sinks were fabricated in-house. The forced convection results show that heat transfer is significantly enhanced when fins are incorporated in metal foam. The heat transfer coefficient increases with increase in the number of fins until adding more fins retards heat transfer due to interference of thermal boundary layers. For the 20 PPI samples, this maximum was reached for four fins. For the 5 PPI heat sinks, the trends were found to be similar to those for the 20 PPI heat sinks. However, due to larger pore sizes, the pressure drop encountered is much lower at a particular air velocity. As a result, for a given pressure drop, the heat transfer coefficient is higher compared to the 20 PPI heat sink. For example, at a Δp of 105 Pa, the heat transfer coefficients were found to be 1169W/m2-K and 995W/m2-K for the 5 PPI and 20 PPI 4-finned heat sinks, respectively. The finned metal foam heat sinks outperform the longitudinal finned and normal metal foam heat sinks by a factor between 1.5 and 2, respectively. Finally, an analytical expression is formulated based on flow through an open channel and incorporating the effects of thermal dispersion and interfacial heat transfer between the solid and fluid phases of the porous medium. The agreement of the proposed relation with the experimental results is promising.

Heat transfer coefficients and the resulting heat flux reduction due to film cooling on a flat plate downstream a row of cylindrical holes are investigated. Highly resolved two dimensional heat transfer coefficient distributions were measured by means of infrared thermography and carefully corrected for local internal testplate conduction and radiation effects [1]. These locally acquired data are processed to lateral average heat transfer coefficients for a quantitative assessment. A wide range variation of the flow parameters blowing rate and density ratio as well as the geometrical parameters streamwise ejection angle and hole spacing is examined. The effects of these dominating parameters on the heat transfer augmentation from film cooling are discussed and interpreted with the help of highly resolved surface results of effectiveness and heat transfer coefficients presented earlier [2]. A new method of evaluating the heat flux reduction from film cooling is presented. From a combination of the lateral average of both the adiabatic effectiveness and the heat transfer coefficient, the lateral average heat flux reduction is processed according to the new method. The discussion of the total effect of film cooling by means of the heat flux reduction reveals important characteristics and constraints of discrete hole ejection. The complete heat transfer data of all measurements are used as basis for a new correlation of lateral average heat transfer coefficients. This correlation combines the effects of all the dominating parameters. It yields a prediction of the heat transfer coefficient from the ejection position to far downstream, including effects of extreme blowing angles and hole spacing. The new correlation has a modular structure to allow for future inclusion of additional parameters. Together with the correlation of the adiabatic effectiveness it provides an immediate determination of the streamwise heat flux reduction distribution of cylindrical hole film cooling configurations.
