Abstract Heat generation measurements of the lithium-ion battery are crucial for the design of the battery thermal management system. Most previous work uses the accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC) to test heat generation of batteries. However, utilizing ARC can only obtain heat generation of the battery operating under the adiabatic condition, deviating from common operation scenarios with heat dissipation. Besides, using ARC is difficult to measure heat generation of the high-rate operating battery because the battery temperature easily exceeds the maximum safety limit. To address these problems, we propose a novel method to obtain heat generation of cylindrical battery based on core and surface temperature measurements and select the 21700 cylindrical battery as the research object. Based on the method, total heat generation at 1C discharge rate under the natural convection air cooling condition in the environmental chamber is about 3.2 kJ, and the average heat generation rate is about 0.9 W. While these two results measured by ARC are about 2.2 kJ and 0.6 W. This gap also reflects that different battery temperature histories have significant impacts on heat generation. In addition, using our approach, total heat generation at 2C discharge rate measured in the environmental chamber is about 5.0 kJ, with the average heat generation rate being about 2.8 W. Heat generation results obtained by our method are approximate to the actual battery operation and have advantages in future applications.

Abstract The paper presents the experimental results on the control of heat transfer enhancement behind the backward-facing step at Re = 4000. The flow is controlled by a pair of longitudinal vortex generators (LVGs) installed at the step edge. The pair of vortex generators (VG) consists of two plates positioned symmetrically relative to the flow. The influence of the height, the angle of VG installation relative to the flow, the distance between VG pairs and the shape of the plate on local and average heat transfer is investigated.

Abstract The results of numerical simulation of a turbulent flow in a flat channel with periodic inclined ribs by the RANS method are presented. The Reynolds number, calculated from the rib height and the superficial velocity, is Re = 12600. The obtained data are analyzed in order to determine the influence of the inclination angle on heat transfer. It is shown that the optimal angle of inclination, at which the average heat transfer in the channel is maximum, is 60°.

One of the most effective ways to intensify heat transfer when blowing surfaces with air is jet blowing. High intensity of transfer processes during jetting, relatively low energy costs for its implementation, simplicity and flexibility of control of this process have led to its widespread use in various fields. Mathematical modeling of heat transfer regularities in systems of impact jets is significantly complicated due to the three-dimensional nature of the flue-channel flow near the surfaces of complex shape. Therefore, it is advisable to use experimental research methods. The purpose of this study is to justify the use of the method of regular thermal regime to determine the average heat transfer coefficient during jet cooling of the surface. Regular mode of cooling (heating) of bodies is characterized by the fact that the relative rate of change of excess temperature for all points of the body remains constant. Since the thermal model was made of a highly thermally conductive duralumin alloy, the condition Bi <0.1 was met, when the average temperatures on the surface and volume will be the same. Therefore, the experiments recorded the readings of only one thermocouple. To compare the results of this experimental study with the results of other authors, cases of blowing a smooth concave surface with single - and three - row jet systems were chosen. The first case was studied in [3,4], the second - in [5]. The results of the performed test experiments agree satisfactorily with the data of these works, which were obtained both by the method of regular mode [5] and other methods of recording heat fluxes ([3] - passive heat flux sensor; [4] - electrocalorimetry). The difference between the average heat transfer coefficients and the known literature data does not exceed ±7..12%, which indicates a sufficient probability of the results obtained in this work, and the possibility of using the method of regular thermal regime in the study of jet cooling of complex bodies. Key words: heat exchange, jet system, cooling, concave surface

The forced convection of non-Newtonian nanofluid for a backward-facing flow system was analyzed under the combined use of magnetic field and double rotating cylinders by using finite element method. The power law nanofluid type was used with different solid volume fractions of alumina at 20 nm in diameter. The effects of the Re number (100≤Re≤300), rotational Re number (−2500≤Rew≤3000), Ha number (0≤Ha≤50), and magnetic field inclination (0≤γ≤90) on the convective heat transfer and flow features were numerically assessed. The non-Newtonian fluid power law index was taken between 0.8 and 1.2 while particle volume fractions up to 4% were considered. The presence of the rotating double cylinders made the flow field complicated where multiple recirculation regions were established near the step region. The impacts of the first (closer to the step) and second cylinders on the heat transfer behavior were different depending upon the direction of rotation. As the first cylinder rotated in the clockwise direction, the enhancement in the average heat transfer of 20% was achieved while it deteriorated by approximately 2% for counter-clockwise directional rotation. However, for the second cylinder, both the rotational direction resulted in heat transfer augmentation while the amounts were 14% and 18% at the highest speeds. Large vortices on the upper and lower channel walls behind the step were suppressed with magnetic field effects. The average Nu number generally increased with the higher strengths of the magnetic field and inclination. Up to 30% increment with strength was obtained while this amount was 44% with vertical orientation. Significant impacts of power law fluid index on the local and average Nu number were seen for an index of n = 1.2 as compared to the fluid with n = 0.8 and n = 1 while an average Nu number of 2.75 times was obtained for the flow system for fluid with n = 1.2 as compared to case for fluid with the n value of 0.8. Further improvements in the local and average heat transfer were achieved with using nanoparticles while at the highest particle amount, the enhancements of the average Nu number were 34%, 36% and 36.6% for the fluid with n values of 0.8, 1 and 1.2, respectively.

Abstract Involute spur gears generate heat due to tooth surface meshing friction. Excessive temperature rising affects transmission accuracy and reduces work reliability.. By establishing the normalized coordinates of the meshing curve and based on the frictional heat generation theory, the mathematical analysis model of the meshing surface heating is studied, the factors affecting the average heat flux density of meshing are explored, and the distribution law of these factors along the normalized coordinate of the meshing is analysed. The analysis shows that the tangential velocity of the meshing point and the half-bandwidth of the time domain contact have the greatest influence on the average heat flow density; the average heat flow density distribution of the driving wheel and the driven wheel are similar. The heat flow density of the driving wheel is greater than that of the driven wheel. Tooth shape modification minimizes tooth surface meshing contact stress, reduces meshing heat generation, controls temperature rise and improves transmission reliability.

Abstract The calculation of temperature field in the mold is important for the study of solidification process of liquid steel. In order to calculate the accurate temperature field of slab in the mod, the boundary condition of heat transfer in the mold should be determined before the calculation of slab temperature. In this paper, the relationship among the average heat transfer coefficient in the mold, the physical properties of steel, the cast condition and the cooling condition is derived according to the energy conservation equation and the Fourier law of heat conduction. Furthermore, the method for determining the parameters related to the formula of boundary heat flux is introduced. Results indicate that the average heat transfer coefficient in the mold ranges from 450 to 2000 W·(m2oC)−1 for conventional caster with a casting speed ranging from 0.8 and 1.8 m·min-1. The average heat transfer coefficient increases with the increase of casting speed. Besides, the casting speed has an effect on the parameters in the formula of calculating boundary heat flux, which indicates that the casting speed and the cooling condition should be taken into consideration for determining parameters related to the formula of calculating surface heat flux in the mold.

In this study, the heat exchange characteristics of water–LiBr solutions used as working fluid in a plate heat exchanger (PHE) were experimentally investigated at various concentrations. To analyze the heat transfer characteristics under LiBr/water conditions, a brazing type plate heat exchanger was installed, and the LiBr concentration on the high-temperature side was controlled at 56%, 58%, 60% and 60%. The results showed that the average heat transfer rate under water/water conditions was higher than that under LiBr/water conditions and the average heat transfer rate decreased as the LiBr concentration on the hot side increased. In addition, under both water/water and LiBr/water conditions, the average heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient increased as the mass flow rate of the working fluid on the hot side increased. When LiBr was used, the Reynolds number (Re) of LiBr on the hot side was more than nine times lower than that of water at the same mass flow rate owing to the influence of the increased viscosity. Based on the data obtained from the water/water and LiBr/water experiments, a correlation for predicting the Nusselt number (Nu) on the hot side in a wide range was developed.
