Direct seeded rice (DSR) is a mainstay for planting rice in the Americas, and it is rapidly becoming more popular in Asia. It is essential to develop rice varieties that are suitable for this type of production system. ASD1, a landrace from India, possesses several traits desirable for direct-seeded fields, including tolerance to anaerobic germination (AG). To map the genetic basis of its tolerance, we examined a population of 200 F2:3 families derived from a cross between IR64 and ASD1 using the restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq) technology. This genotyping platform enabled the identification of 1921 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers to construct a high-resolution genetic linkage map with an average interval of 0.9 cM. Two significant quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were detected on chromosomes 7 and 9, qAG7 and qAG9, with LOD scores of 7.1 and 15.0 and R2 values of 15.1 and 29.4, respectively. Here, we obtained more precise locations of the QTLs than traditional simple sequence repeat and low-density SNP genotyping methods and may help further dissect the genetic factors of these QTLs.

Integrated use of organic and inorganic fertilizers can improve crop productivity and sustain soil health and fertility. To gain insights into the response of green manure and chemical fertilizer, the present study was conducted to evaluate the growth, yield and proximate composition of aromatic rice varieties in Aman season at the research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from July to December 2014. The experiment was set up in split-plot design with three aromatic rice varieties in main plots and six fertilizer levels in subplots. ‘Raniselute’ variety produced the highest plant height, dry matter weight hill-1, straw yield (7.81 t ha-1), biological yield (9.05 t ha-1), ash (1.59%), and fat content (2.81%). ‘BRRI dhan34’ gave the maximum number of effective tillers hill-1 (12.74), panicle length (27.93 cm), number of filled grains panicle-1 (192.5), 1,000-grain weight (17.22 g), grain yield (2.26 t ha-1), harvest index (29.99%), and carbohydrate content (77.63%). Application of 80% recommended doses of NPKSZn + green manure 3.5 t ha-1 showed better performance for getting the maximum growth, yield components and yield compared to other treatments. Recommended doses of NPKSZn showed the highest carbohydrate content (77.63%) and lowest moisture (8.75%) and ash content (1.29%). The maximum fat content (3.07%) and minimum carbohydrate content (76.53%) was obtained from 60% recommended doses of NPKSZn + green manure 7 t ha-1. Application of 20 and 40% recommended doses of NPKSZn + green manure 14 and 10.5 t ha-1 produced the highest moisture content (10.43%) and lowest protein content (8.26%) in rice grain. Green manure 17.5 t ha-1 produced the highest ash (1.79%), protein content (9.06%) and lowest fat content (2.51%).

Two pot and two field experiments were conducted at Patuakhali Science and Technology University research farm to investigate the contribution of tidal submergence to phosphorus nutrition and yield of rice. Pot and field experiments were conducted in the Aus and Aman seasons of 2009, respectively. The factorial experiments include two levels of water source- i) tidal water and ii) ground water, and three levels of fertilizers- i) absolute control (no fertilizer), ii) NK (P omission) and iii) NPK (P addition). The rice varieties used were BRRI dhan27 (HYV) and Local Mala (Traditional variety) in Aus season and BR23 (HYV) and Lalmota (Traditional variety) in Aman season. A general increase in growth, yield and yield contributing parameters were found due to irrigation with tidal water. Tidal water contributed about 21 (BR23) and 7 (Lalmota) % higher grain yield in Aman season 2009 and about 2 g biomass yield per pot (both BRRI dhan27 and Local Mala) in Aus season of 2009 compared to ground water. Phosphorus content of rice grain and straw was always higher when plants are irrigated with tidal water. In general tidal submergence increases P uptake of rice. Phosphorus uptake from tidal water treatments increased when plants were supplied with N and K fertilizer. Tidal submergence contributed about 5-6 kg P/ha in P omission plot, and about 12-14 kg P/ha in plots with added P.  Keywords: Phosphorus; Rice; Tidal submergence DOI: 10.3329/jbau.v8i2.7927 J. A field experiment was conducted at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Aurangabad and in farmers’ field during rainy seasons of 2013, 2014 and 2015, to Performance of drought tolerant rice varieties under various methods of stand establishment in rainfed drought-prone condition of Bihar. Experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with 3 methods of establishment i.e. broad coasting, direct seeded rice (DSR), and transplanted rice (TPR), and two varieties viz. Sahbhagiedhan, SushkeSamrat in a total of 5 replications including four at KVK, Aurangabad and one at farmers’ field during three years. Direct seeding of rice (DSR) with ZTD machine produced significantly higher plant height, number of tillers/m2, panicles/m2, grains/panicle, filled grains/panicle. However panicle length and Panicle weight were recorded maximum with   to transplanting method over Direct seeded rice with ZTD machine and broad coasting. 1000grain weight was recorded significantly maximum with Direct seeded rice with ZTD machine and transplantinh over broad coasting. Direct seed produced 7.60% and 30.95% more yield in 2014, 7.88% and 32.10% more yield in 2014 and 12.00% and 30.23% more yield in 2016 over transplanted and broad coasting rice, respectively. Net return and benefit-cost ratio were also significantly higher in direct seeded rice with ZTD machine than transplanted rice and broad coasting of rice. Amongst the varieties of rice, Sushk Samrat produced significantly higher yield attributes viz., tillers/m2, panicles/m2, grains/panicle, filled grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight, and subsequently produced grain yield higher by 13.42 in 2014, 10.10% in 2015 and by 7.03% in 2016 over Sahbhagie dhan. Net return and benefit-cost ratio were also recorded significantly higher with Sushk Samrat than Sahbhagiedhan.

Tidal water contributed about 19% (BR23) and 11% (Lalmota) higher grain yield in Aman season 2009 compared to that grown with ground water. Potassium contents of rice grain and straw were always higher when plants are irrigated with tidal water. In general, tidal submergence increased K uptake of rice. The K uptake by BR23 under tidal water was about 47, 43 and 8 kg/ha more than those recorded with ground water irrigation under absolute control, K omission and K addition treatments, respectively whereas it was 31, 21, and 68 kg/ha, in Lalmota. The results indicated that whether fertilizers were applied or not plants absorb considerable amount of K from tidal water. Bangladesh J. Agril. A field study was conducted in south Texas in the spring 1990 to determine the effects of ground cover, planting method and drip irrigation rates on cantaloupe growth, yield and quality. Transplanting vs. direct seeding enhanced early vine growth with earlier yields, although direct seeding later caught up resulting in comparable final cumulative yields. Black polyethylene mulch also improved earliness but at the loser irrigation rate total yields were reduced due to deflection of rainfall by the mulch. Irrigation at .1, .3, .5, .7 and .9 times pan evaporation had little effect on final cumulative yields with exception to the .1 and .3 rates. Melon sugar content was highest for transplants with direct seeded melons becoming comparable only at mid to final harvest. The combined practices of transplanting and black polyethylene mulch resulted in a 14 day earliness advantage over the treatments that were direct seeded on bare soil although final yields were unaffected. No appreciable increase in soil salinity were found as a result of drip irrigation usage.
