The present investigation entitled “Studies on Heterosis for Yield and Yield Contributing Traits in Desi Cotton (Gossypium arboreum L.) was undertaken with the objective to study the scale of heterosis over mid parent (Average heterosis), better parent (Heterobeltiosis) and standard check (Standard heterosis). The line x tester method of analysis was followed involving four females viz., PA 811, PA 839, PA 808 and PAIG 380 and six males viz. AKA 8, JLA 505, PA 812, AKA 7, PA 08 and Phule Dhanwantry for study of heterosis for various yield and yield contributing characters. The F1’s and theis parents were evaluated in Randomized Block Design with two replications. Observations were recorded on Days to 50 % flowering, Plant height (cm), Number of sympodia, Number of bolls/plant, Boll weight (g), Seed index, Seed cotton yield/plant (g) and Lint index. The magnitude of heterosis was highest for seed cotton yield per plant, which was recorded to the extent of 115.28 % over standard check PKV Suvarna in the cross PAIG 380 x AKA 8 followed by 109.68 % over standard check PKVDH 1.

Cotton is one of the most important fiber and cash crop of India and plays a dominant role in the industrial and agricultural economy of the country. Fifty six crosses with fifteen parents and four checks viz., PKVDH 1, PKVSuvarna, NACH 12 and PA 255 were grown in Randomized Block Design with two replications. Pooled over the environments, the highest GCA effect for seed cotton yield plant was showed by line PAIG 346and also exhibited high GCA (in desirable direction) for the traits, sympodia per plant, number of bolls per plant, seed index, lint index and harvest index. Among the testers, highest GCA for seed cotton yield per plant (9.72) was reported in CNA 449.This tester showed significantly desirable GCA for the characters viz. plant height, number of sympodia per plant, number of bolls per plant, boll weight, seed index and harvest index. Pooled over the environments, among the crosses highest SCA for seed cotton yield per plant was reported in PA 740 x Digvijay. It has also exhibited significant SCA in desirable direction for days to 50 % boll bursting, number of sympodia per plant, number of bolls per plant, boll weight, seed index and harvest index. Another cross which ranked second for with high per se and high SCA for seed cotton yield per plant was PAIG 346 x DWDa 1402.It showed significantly desirable SCA for days to 50 % flowering, number of sympodia per plant, number of bolls per plant, seed index, lint index and harvest index.

Cotton is a very important crop that consists of traits with different associationship due to genetic and environmental factors. In order to determine the degree of association between seed cotton yield and important traits, a study was done using an RBD experiment with 30 hybrids. Seed cotton yield, plant height, GOT, number of sympodial braches, boll weight, bolls per plant, span length, fineness and strength data were collected and analysed. The experiment was done with 30 F1 hybrids have delivered through Line x Tester mating configuration utilizing six lines and five testers were planted in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two replications at the Department of Cotton, TNAU, Coimbatore. Seed cotton yield per plant was found to have significant positive genotypic connection with boll weight (0.5810), number of bolls per plant (0.3867), plant height (0.422) and ginning percent (0.2182) however altogether and contrarily related with consistency proportion at genotypic level. The phenotypic relationship esteems likewise uncovered that seed cotton yield per plant had highly huge and positive phenotypic connection with number of bolls per plant (0.3470) and boll weight (0.4763). The experiment was laid to analyze genetic features, genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients, path analysis with regression analysis among yield contributing traits in a selected F3 populations of upland cotton including parents. In this research experiment ANOVA showed significant difference among all individual plants in F3 populations. Monopodia per plant and bolls per plant possessed maximum value of PCV% and GCV%. Maximum broad sense heritability (≥ 90) was found in all recorded traits except seeds per boll, fiber length and lint percentage. Correlation studies revealed that Seed cotton yield positively correlated with all yield contributing traits i.e. plant height, monopodial branches per plant, Number of bolls per plant, boll weight, lint weight, seed index, lint index, seeds per boll, fiber fineness, fiber strength and fiber uniformity at both genotypic and phenotypic level whereas it depicted negative relationship with staple length. Path coefficient analysis showed that maximum direct positive effect was found of lint weight (2.6005) on seed cotton yield followed fiber fineness (1.2628), seed index (1.1449) and bolls per plant (1.0027). Regression study exhibited that maximum value of R2 for lint weight (0.9509) and boll weight (0.3735) depicted that 95.09% and 37.35% variation in the seed cotton yield, due to its relationship with lint weight and boll weight. It is concluded that there is a great genetic potential in F3 populations for mostly yield contributing traits for further enhancing yield. So those traits should be used as selection criteria during breeding for yield.

Abstract Background Cotton breeding programs mainly focus on improving cotton fibers, but less attention has been paid by breeders to cottonseed oil improvement. Breeding cottonseed for oil content has mainly depended on phenotypic information used to select varieties with high seed oil content. The purpose of this study was to evaluate some cotton genotypes regarding their oil content and other characters related to fiber yield, in order to select genotypes with high oil content and acceptable levels of the other characters. Seventeen different genotypes of cotton were used in this study. A two-year experiment was carried out at Sids Agricultural Research Station, Beni Suef, Egypt, during 2017 and 2018, using a randomized complete block design with six replications. Seed cotton yield, lint cotton yield, boll weight, seed index, embryo index, oil % and embryo oil index characters were recorded. Results The analysis of variance results showed highly significant differences among the genotypes for all the studied traits except boll weight in season 2017. The overall cotton embryo oil % ranged from 33.40 to 40.28 among the genotypes, while the overall cotton embryo oil index ranged from 1.79 to 2.47. Maximum cotton embryo oil % was noted by the genotypes 15 [{(G83 × G80) × G89} × Australian] and 8 [(G 91 × G90) × (G 85 × G 83)], while maximum cotton embryo oil index was noted by the genotype 13 [(G 91 × G 90) × G80]. The results showed positive correlations between seed cotton yield and lint cotton yield, seed index and embryo index, seed index and embryo index oil %, embryo index and embryo index oil %, and oil % and embryo index oil %. Conclusions It could be concluded that using seed or embryo oil percentages as criteria for differentiating genotypes according to their oil content is misleading and the best efficient measure is using the seed or embryo oil indices because they depend on weight basis. Also, Genotypes 13, 15 and 8 were the best genotypes regarding oil % and they could be used in breeding programs for cotton oil improvement.

Abstract Background Cotton is known for its fiber and it is grown in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world. It has a significant role in GDP of Pakistan. Therefore, present two years research was conducted to estimate heritability and association among various yield contributing parameters of cotton. The selected genotypes of cotton were hybridized in green house of the department. The F 0 cotton seed along with parents were planted in the field conditions during May, 2018. The sowing of this experiment was completed in three replications followed by RCBD. The data was recorded at maturity for various agronomic traits including plant height, number of bolls per plant, number of sympodial branches per plant, seed cotton yield, boll weight, seed index, ginning out turn, fiber length, fiber strength, and fiber fineness. Level of significance of data was computed by ANOVA to assess the difference among cotton genotypes which was used for estimation of heritability and correlation analysis among the related traits. Results Association analysis revealed that seed cotton yield had significant positive relationship with plant height, number of bolls per plant, number of sympodial branches per plant, ginning out turn, staple length and fiber strength. Staple length and fiber strength were negatively linked with each other. Estimates of heritability were high for all observed traits except number of sympodial branches per plant and boll weight. Conclusion The parent IUB-222 was found best for plant height, number of bolls per plant, boll weight, ginning out turn, seed cotton yield and seed index. NIAB-414 and VH-367 were identified best parents for fiber length, strength and fineness. Among crosses NIAB-414 × IUB-222 was best for number of bolls per plant, seed index, seed cotton yield and fiber fineness. Whereas, cross NIAB-414 × CIM-632 was good for plant height. The combination of A555 × CIM-632 was best for number of sympodial branches per plant, boll weight, fiber length and strength. VH-367 × CIM-632 proved best for ginning out turn. The correlation results from this study would be helpful to breed cotton cultivars with good yield and quality characters. Broad sense heritability was high for all of parameters which provides the strong evidence that selection in early generations can improve the performance of these traits.

Combining ability analysis was performed in order to identify high-yielding genotypes and hybrids. Six lines were crossed with three testers using a line × tester mating design. General combining ability (GCA) of parents, specific combining ability (SCA) of hybrids and gene action for several yield components and fibre were studied in the experiment. Additive gene action was observed in most traits except bolls/plant, sympodia/plant, monopodia/plant, total nodes, seed index, lint/seed, staple strength and seed cotton yield/plant which were influenced by non-additive gene action. GCA revealed that Giza-7 was a good general combiner for staple length, staple strength, seed index, boll weight, bolls/plant and monopodia/plant and BH-167 was good for ginning outturn (GOT) and sympodia/plant. Results of SCA values for hybrids indicated, that the cross Giza-7 × MNH-886 was a superior specific combiner for staple length, monopodia/plant, staple strength and seed cotton yield/plant; CIM-554 × CIM-557 for boll weight, sympodia/plant and lint weight/boll; BH-167 × MNH-886 for GOT and bolls/plant. Selection of such hybrids and good general combiners could be further exploited for yield improvement.

<p>The present investigation was aimed to determine the general combining ability of the parental lines and specific combining ability of the hybrids respectively and also heterotic effect of F<sub>1</sub> hybrids for some agro-economical traits in upland cotton. Five parent genotypes viz. NIAB-78, Chandi-95, Haridost, CRIS-134 and Shahbaz were used to generate ten F<sub>1</sub> hybrids through diallel mating design. The seeds of F<sub>1</sub> hybrids along with their parents were sown in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in three replications during 2009-10. All the traits showed highly significant variation and GCA and SCA variances were also significant for all the parameters studied. Among the parents, NIAB-78, Haridost and CRIS-134 were best general combiners for plant height, sympodial branches per plant, bolls per plant, boll weight, seed cotton yield per plant, GOT% and seed index. Cross NIAB-78×Chandi-95 was best specific combiner for plant height and bolls per plant and CRIS-134×Haridost for sympodial branches per plant. However, the hybrid Chandi-95×CRIS-134 proved best specific combiner for seed cotton yield per plant and GOT%, while NIAB-78×CRIS-134 gave maximum SCA effects for seed index.</p>

The combining ability studies assist in choosing the desirable parents for crossing in hybrid development. Forty derived hybrids generated by crossing ten F5 lines to the four testers for assessing combining ability. Hybrids along with the parents were planted in randomized block design and analysis of variance suggested that lines had significant differences for all the characters studied except number of monopodia per plant, reproductive points on sympodia and ginning outturn. Significant line effect of seed cotton yield and lint yield was revealed by ANOVA for combining ability. Variance of sca was higher than Variance of gca for all characters apart from seed cotton yield and lint yield. RGR F6 9 and RGR F6 7 lines were recorded to be the highest seed cotton yielding lines. The gca effects were highly significant for seed cotton yield and lint yield in RGR F5 1 and RGR F5 5 lines. RGR F5 1 x DR-8, RGR F5 7 x DR-8 and RGR F5 8 x DR-8 were the top three hybrids for seed cotton yield. The sca effect was positively significant in hybrids RGR F5 7 × DR-8 and RGR F5 1 × DR-8 for seed cotton yield.

The development of high yielding cotton hybrids is essential to meet the current cotton demands. On the other hand, the cotton ratooning allows to obtain maximum seed yields with early maturity of plant. Therefore, the present study was aimed to investigate the per se performance, ratooning ability and heterosis effects for yield and yield contributing traits in 28 novel hybrids through line x tester analysis by considering four varieties as lines and seven varieties as testers. Significant variability was observed for all investigated traits excluding the number of monopodial branches and boll weight traits in parents and their 28 hybrids. Among the parents, TSH 0499 and TSH 04/115 exhibited a fair performance for yield and yield contributing traits and SURABHI, TSH 0250 and VS 9-S11-1 expressed superior ratooning ability. Therefore, these parents have a potential to be exploited for the development of the efficient cotton hybrids. Among the tested F1 hybrids, TSH 0499 x TCH 1777, BGDS 1063 x TCH 1819, TSH 0499 x TCH 1819 and TSH 04/115 x SVPR 4 hybrids recorded superior performance for number of bolls, boll weight, lint index and seed cotton yield in first crop, respectively. The hybrids ARBC 19 x TSH 0250, TSH 0499 x SURABHI , TSH 0499 x TSH 0250 and TSH 0499 x TCH 1705-101 displayed good ratooning performance for number of bolls, boll weight, lint index and seed cotton yield, respectively. All the hybrids expressed a range of significantly positive and negative heterosis for tested traits. However, the observed negative heterosis for seed index is desirable since the hybrids produce more lint. The results of this study would give insights into the understanding of genetic variance present in the intra-hirsutum hybrids.

<p>ABSTRAK<br />Jamur entomopatogen Beauveria bassiana sangat potensial<br />mengendalikan berbagai serangga hama, namun potensinya terhadap<br />penggerek buah kapas (Helicoverpa armigera) belum banyak diteliti.<br />Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui efektivitas B. bassiana<br />terhadap H. armigera. Penelitian dilakukan di Laboratorium Patologi<br />Serangga dan Kebun Percobaan Karangploso, Balai Penelitian Tanaman<br />Pemanis dan Serat mulai Januari hingga Desember 2012. Penelitian terdiri<br />atas dua kegiatan di lapangan, yaitu (1) uji efektivitas B. bassiana terhadap<br />H. armigera di pot, dan (2) uji efektivitas B. bassiana terhadap H.<br />armigera di lapangan. Kegiatan pertama terdiri dari delapan perlakuan<br />konsentrasi B. bassiana, yaitu: (1) 3,7 x 10 4 ; (2) 7,7 x 10 4 ; (3) 1,2 x 10 5 ;<br />(4) 1,5 x 10 5 ; (5) 1,9 x 10 5;  (6) 2,3 x 10 5;  (7) 2,5 x 10 5 ; (8) 3,0 x 10 5<br />konidia/ml; dan (9) kontrol. Perlakuan disusun dalam Rancangan Acak<br />Kelompok dengan 3 kali ulangan. Parameter yang diamati adalah<br />mortalitas dan bobot larva hidup. Kegiatan kedua terdiri dari empat<br />perlakuan konsentrasi B. bassiana, yaitu: (1) 3,1 x 10 11 ; (2) 6,2 x 10 11 ; (3)<br />9,3 x 10 11 ; dan (4) 1,2 x 10 12 konidia/ha dengan dua pembanding<br />(azadirachtin dan betasiflutrin), serta kontrol. Perlakuan disusun dalam<br />Rancangan Acak Kelompok dengan tiga kali ulangan. Parameter yang<br />diamati adalah populasi larva H. armigera dan laba-laba, kerusakan buah<br />kapas, dan hasil kapas berbiji. Hasil uji efektivitas di pot menunjukkan<br />hingga hari ke-7 setelah perlakuan B. bassiana masih efektif menyebabkan<br />mortalitas larva H. armigera sebesar 46,7% dan meningkatkan kehilangan<br />bobot larva hidup hingga 59,3%, terutama pada konsentrasi 2,3 x 10 5<br />konidia/ml. Di lapangan, perlakuan jamur B. bassiana efektif menurunkan<br />populasi larva H. armigera sekitar 36-48%, tetapi menurunkan populasi<br />laba-laba hingga 48,4%, sehingga kurang aman bagi musuh alami tersebut.<br />Perlakuan B. bassiana dapat menurunkan kerusakan buah kapas 10,1-<br />10,3% dengan meningkatkan hasil kapas berbiji sekitar 12,1-29,7%.<br />Kata kunci: Beauveria bassiana, Helicoverpa armigera, konidia, larva,<br />mortalitas</p><p>ABSTRACT<br />Beauveria bassiana is the most common fungal entomopathogen<br />against several of insect pests. Its potency, however, has not been tested on<br />cotton bollworm, H. armigera. The objective of study was to know the<br />effectivity of B. bassiana against H. armigera. This study had been<br />conducted at Pathology Laboratory and Experimental Station of<br />Indonesian Sweetener and Fiber Crops Research Institute (ISFCRI) from<br />January to December 2012. The study consists of two field tests, e.g. test<br />on B. bassiana effectivity against H. armigera (polybag testing) dan test<br />on B. bassiana effectivity a against H. armigera (field testing). In polybag<br />testing, eight concentrations of B. bassiana and one control were used as<br />treatment, e.g. (1) 3.7 x 10 4 ; (2) 7.7 x 10 4 ; (3) 1.2 x 10 5 ; (4) 1.5 x 10 5 ; (5)<br />1.9 x 10 5;  (6) 2.3 x 10 5;  (7) 2.5 x 10 5 ; (8) 3.0 x 10 5  conidia/ml; and (9)<br />control. Each treatment was arranged in Randomized Block Design with<br />three replications. Parameters recorded were mortality and weight of<br />survival larvae. The field testing consists of four concentrations of B.<br />bassiana viz. 3.1 x 10 11 ; 6.2 x 10 11 ; 9.3 x 10 11 ; and (4) 1.2 x 10 12 conidia/ha<br />which compared to azadirachtin and betacyfluthrin. Each treatment was<br />arranged in Randomized Block Design with three replications. Parameter<br />observed were population of H. armigera larvae and its natural enemy<br />(spiders), boll damage, and seed cotton yield. Result showed that until the<br />day seventh the mortality of H. armigera larvae reached 46.7% due to B.<br />bassiana and loss 59.3% of larval weight at 2,3 x 10 5 conidia/ml in<br />polybag testing. In field testing, B. bassiana proved to be relatively<br />harmful to spiders because it reduced the their population as 48.4%.<br />However, the B. bassiana reduced of 36-48% the population of H.<br />armigera larvae as well as the cotton boll damage of 10.1-10.3% and<br />increased the seed cotton yield ranged 12.1-29.7%.<br />Key words: Beauveria bassiana, Helicoverpa armigera, conidia, larvae,<br />mortality</p>
