In modern business, dynamic changes in the environment (macro trends) provoke changes within the company. Companies can protect themselves from latent, acute crises. In addition, companies can navigate a turbulent environment while ensuring organizational existence and development. Organizational forms and characteristics, as well as business models to maintain or increase existence and create competitive advantages in the global market, are increasingly sought in a more creative manner. These actions are based on dynamic strategic thinking. Revolutionary methods are often required for the creation and adaptation of competitive business models. The data from companies that face a current crisis show a gap between the need to change business models and the introduction of adapted business models to achieve the desired level of competitiveness.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine two contrasting leadership development methodologies, Reflective Practice and Scharmer’s Theory U. Design/methodology/approach – Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle and Scharmer’s Reflecting Deeply exercise were applied to the same leadership incident on separate days. Findings – Reflective Practice provided helpful insights through focusing on one’s thoughts, feelings and motives during the event, as well as the actions of others and the author’s responses to them. The author found that using Scharmer’s Reflecting Deeply exercise enabled a deeper understanding of the incident to emerge, which also provided new and distinct insights. Research limitations/implications – The main limitation was the case study nature of this exercise; these findings are merely the result of one person’s experiences. Practical implications – To develop rounded leadership skills, leaders can benefit from tapping into all of their resources; these two approaches allow different aspects of one’s intelligence to be accessed, which ought to facilitate greater development. Social implications – Many authors cite a current crisis of leadership, not least of all a perceived failure to tackle the environmental challenges we face. By seeking to develop more intelligent and rounded leaders, leadership itself ought to improve which in turn should help society tackle pressing issues. Originality/value – To the author’s knowledge, a direct comparison of the leadership development methodologies used in this paper has not been previously described. This paper provides useful insights into the practical application of Reflective Practice and Scharmer’s Theory U, which will help inform others seeking to develop as leaders.

Survey designers often assume the existence of an underlying linear continuum with equal intervals between anchors when they create a scale. However, this is not necessarily the case when labels, such as “somewhat acceptable,” “completely acceptable”, etc. are assigned to these intervals. This study examines numeric ratings assigned by college students to adverb intensifiers. Numeric ratings (from −5 to + 5) were collected from college males (n=54), college females (n=54) for positive and negative adverb-intensifiers of acceptability (n=50), adequacy (n=50), and relative goodness (n=41). Minimal differences were noted in mean ratings, variability, and order of the ratings assigned by males and females. Three different scale development strategies were utilized to develop 54 adverb intensifier scales with intervals of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 11 descriptors for acceptability, adequacy, and relative goodness. Survey designers are invited to use these scales or the raw data to develop their own scales. Those who do so will have the advantage of using data based on a current college population.

Palabras clave Índex, fotografía, pintura, Gerhard Richter, anti estilo Abstract The present text approaches the work of Gerhard Richter in terms of footprint or index, concept by which better understand the ways of painting of the German artist from 1962. For do this, we analyze how the concept of index works both in the photo-paintings of the 1960s and in the abstract work of the eighties and nineties. It is studied how their ways of doing have to do with a machine art and not with the traditional procedure of painters to create paintings. Afterwards, the debate focuses on the technicality, the mechanicity and the anti-style characteristic of the photo-paintings and the abstract paintings understood as a footprint, far from conventional painting and without any type of artifice. A current reading on the iconic that explores the new languages of the artistic from the mechanicity of the technique in the slide that arises from the photographic to the pictorial. I would like to seize the opportunity of the theme of this conference tohighlight some of the flaws which taint and constrain American foreign policyin the Middle East and, more generally, in the Muslim world. I do so with thepurpose of exploring the possibilities for a change which would be to the advantageof all parties concerned, for while I believe that America’s Middle East policyis largely prompted by considerations of national self-interest and expediency, and that these might be subsumed under the category of ‘‘greed,’’ there still remainsa recurrent undertone and preoccupation with a moral self-justification that seeksgrounds of justice and right for all its pursuits. Beyond greed and morality, however, the determining factor for both dimensions is contingent upon ourperceptions, conceptions, and the ideas we have concerning the Other as wellas about what constitutes our own best interest and our particular morality. Thecontrols on our perceptions and self-understanding lie in a kind of treasure chestwhich we inherit or, to use a current idiom of the micro-chip generation, theylie in a floppy disk which lies in the eye of our mind. Whatever it is that we inherit,it comes not so much with our genes as with our cultural legacy, which istransmitted primarily through the process of our socialization. While suchperceptions may be decisive in shaping our attitudes towards the situations weencounter, they are not necessarily permanent, for acquired attitudes which havebeen learned can also be unlearned, although this is often a more complicatedprocess. In the realm of attitudes to the Muslim world, I feel that Americansare encumbered with a heavy legacy which lies at the root of the many enthusiasmsand complacencies which have time and again been reflected in American foreignpolicy and in American reactions to events in that region ...

This article examines a current crisis within media librarianship regarding the challenges for academic libraries in providing streaming access to video resources despite the growing need for users to have streaming access. The article discusses this crisis largely within the context of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease of 2019) and how the pandemic has exacerbated the problem. This article also posits a possible solution to the issue through the application of controlled digital lending (CDL) to video resources for a pedagogical purpose. The article demonstrates the extent of the crisis, examines how other media librarians have addressed the problem, and shows the limitations to the solutions that have so far been offered. It then broadly discusses the concept of CDL and how this practice could be applied to video resources to address the frequent inability of libraries to provide streaming access to videos.

AbstractBy Wednesday, July 22, 2020, the coronavirus had killed over 611,000 people and infected over fourteen million globally. It devastated lives and will continue to do so for a long time to come; the economic consequences of the pandemic are only just starting to materialize. This makes it a challenging time to write about the new common. However, we need to start somewhere. At some point, we need to reflect on our own roles, the roles of our institutions, the importance of our economy, and the future fabric of everyday life. In this chapter, I will discuss one minor—and compared to the current crisis seemingly inconsequential—aspect of the new common: I will discuss my worry that we are on the verge of missing the opportunity to properly (re-)define the role of the sciences as we move from our old to our new common.

AbstractIs Education in Arts Necessary? Although the answer may seem obvious, this is a debate that on more than one occasion has been heard both in the academy and outside of it. The positions are antagonistic, almost belligerent, as it can be said that it is notnecessary, and even less in crisis contexts by some; as well as being seen as even more necessary in these contexts by others. The issue is urgent and especially in the reality that we are currently living in, and the one that we are beginning to rebuild, as a society. In order to do so, we interview the artists / teachers / researchers in and through the arts who, from their own expertise, help us to weave the dialogue together. Keywords: Art, education, interview, pandemic, social political crisis, Ecuador.
