A New York painter and freelance teaching artist describes an experience visiting Matisse’s painting “The Moroccans” at the Museum of Modern Art with a group of young people and their families. She describes her aesthetic education methods which include encouraging museum visitors to engage deeply with works of art by noticing, asking questions, and participating in group discussion. When the visitors’ conclusions about “The Moroccans” turn out to be at odds with the museum’s wall text, they question what they should believe—their own eyes or the museum’s official interpretation of this abstract work. Connecting this experience to John Dewey’s writing about the purpose of art and the power of the perceiver to activate an art object, the author reflects on the role of museums and the sometimes conflicting priorities of public engagement and scholarly authority.

Abstract. Work anxiety is a common mental health problem that is often overlooked and often causes long periods of sick leave. This is the first representative survey on the distribution of work-phobic anxiety in Germany. Of the 2,030 working-age participants (18 – 67 years), 7 % had increased work-phobic anxiety of a moderate (5 % with scores >1.5 – 2.5 on a scale from 0 – 4) or high (2 % with scores >2.5 – 4) degree. People with high levels of work-phobic anxiety reported the longest sick leave durations during the past 12 months (8 weeks) and the most periods of unemployment in their professional lives. The three groups were similar in age, sex, and partnership status. People with high work-phobic anxiety perceived themselves least competent in almost all dimensions of psychological capacity. Occupational health must consider work-phobic anxiety as a specific mental health problem closely linked to work-ability problems.

This paper aims to discuss the idea of creating a zero-gravity theatre, pioneered by Dragan Živadinov, a Slovenian conceptual artist. In order to do so, the author turns to Russian philosophical (N. Fyodorov, K. Tsiolkovsky, A Chizhevsky) and artistic sources (K. Malevich), as well as the space exploration envisioned by Slovenian scientist Herman Potocnik Noordung, who influenced Živadinov's cosmokinetic art. Resisting the legacy of cosmists and supremacists, Živadinov designs his objectless antimimetic theatre with a void actor, freed from weight and expected to be replaced by a technical substitute, which emits the actor’s memory from near-equatorial orbit. This article examines the foundations of post-gravity theatre, which are based on three algorithms with the digital memory of the actor: biological (recording of body coordinates), biographical (recording of professional biography), and biomechatronic (recording of genetic structure). These will be controlled by the “umbot” both on stage and in space after the death of the actors. The author focuses on the Biomechanics Noordung production, performed in the stratosphere on board an IL‑76 MDK aircraft. Due to sudden free-fall moments, the performers experienced a state of weightlessness, interpreted as a rehearsal for the future liberation of the body from gravity. In conditions which made it possible to create a dozen modes of weightlessness, the actors could perform in a state of levitation, which was perceived as a unique abstract theatrical performance. Combining Meyerhold’s theory of biomechanics, conceived in the 1920s as a system of exercises for the actor’s body, with Noordung’s research on gravity and ways to overcome it, represented by drawings of a rotating space station, Živadinov realised the idea of theatricalising the cosmos. With this performance, Živadinov shows that an abstract work of art can become truly abstract only if it triumphs over gravity, i. e. if it loses its gravitational orientation (up, down, left, right) and manifests itself in zero gravity.

In 2003 the German artist Wolfgang Tillmans installed a selection of his Silver works—a body of abstract, nuanced, monochromic surfaces—together with ten almost identical editions of his Arctic works, images depicting the Arctic landscapes photographed from above. The result was a grid of unframed works appearing as mundane, monochromic yet meditative surfaces that changed and moved. The reflective play between the abstract and the representational, between media, matter, and nature, suggests that Tillmans’s abstractions take photography into a lively dialogue with the affective and diagrammatic means of image production and constellating. This essay takes Silver and the way in which those pieces were installed together with the Arctic works in the paradigmatic exhibition if one thing matters, everything matters at Tate Britain in 2003, as the place of departure for a closer inspection of Tillmans’s abstract work, connecting the history of photography with artistic practices of the historical avant-garde inevitably concerned with the formal forces of colors, light, and other matter. My inquiry revolves around questions of processes and relations, or, to be more precise, how the abstract and representational images at Tate Britain were less concerned with representation or the familiar 1990s concept of indexicality, than with processes of mediations evolving between matter, bodies, technologies, and the natural world. My assertion is that the Silver and Arctic works as constellated in one of seven rooms at Tate Britain in 2003 attest to how photography provoked new understandings of materiality and ecology in the late 1990s and early 2000s, while gesturing toward a politicization of “nature” and challenges to the anthropocentric worldview.

Abstract: Work and Health. Job Satisfaction and Job Suffering in the “Brave New World of Work” In a brief sociohistorical review, the article presents the changes in the world of work beginning with early industrialization up to the present day and discusses the respective health consequences. Work satisfaction and work suffering are thereby considered in an interrelation. In order to understand the effects of (gainful) employment on health, it is necessary to consider the salutogenic as well as pathogenic factors of work and to examine them on different levels, i.e. work situation, work cooperation, employment biography as well as social time. Work is both a protective and a risk factor for health, and its contribution to health has received too little attention so far.

Abstract. Work vigor is defined by cognitive, affective, and behavioral components. The purpose of this multi-study paper was to develop a French version of the Shirom-Melamed Vigor Measure (F-SMVM), and test its (a) construct validity (i.e., factorial structure and internal consistency), (b) convergent and discriminant validity with the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9), and (c) concurrent validity with work motivation and job satisfaction. Six hundred and forty (61.72% female) employees participated in the three present studies. Convergent and discriminant construct validity of the F-SMVM were examined with a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and a multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) analysis. Concurrent validity was examined through correlations and regressions with work motivation and job satisfaction. Overall, the results supported the reliability and the construct validity of the F-SMVM. They also showed evidence of convergent validity between the F-SMVM and the UWES-9, as well as evidence of concurrent validity with work motivation and job satisfaction. The F-SMVM represents a valid measure assessing three interrelated dimensions representing physical, cognitive, and emotional components of work engagement.
