‘Disobedient Democracy: A Comparative Analysis of Contentious Politics in the European Semi-periphery’ is a research project implemented by the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Zagreb, in the period 2016-2021, led by Principal Investigator Danijela Dolenec and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (IZ11Z0_166540 – PROMYS). The overall objective of the project is to explore how protest politics advances democracy by collecting and analyzing data on protest mobilizations in four countries: Portugal, Spain, Croatia and Serbia.‎

Within a research project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation the implementation of COVID-19 prevention strategies in prisons allover Switzerland were focused. This paper presents an example of the prevention strategy of a closed prison, which faced particular challenges in the implementation of social distancing measures due to its special architecture and limited space.<br>

Trudi C. Miller died on September 30, 2003, after a brief illness. After earning a BA in English from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she spent most of her career at the National Science Foundation. After a brief stay at the State University of New York at Buffalo, she moved to NSF, where she rose to be the program director for the Decision, Risk and Management Division of Social and Economic Science.

Each year the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) honors the achievements of an early- to mid-career scientist with the Overton Prize. This prize was instituted in 2001 to honor the untimely loss of Dr. G. Christian Overton, a respected computational biologist and founding member of the ISCB Board of Directors. The Overton Prize recognizes early or mid-career phase scientists who have made significant contributions to computational biology or bioinformatics through their research, teaching, and service. In 2019, ISCB recognized Dr. Christophe Dessimoz, Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Professor at the University of Lausanne, Associate Professor at the University College London, and Group Leader at the Swiss Institute for Bioinformatics. Dessimoz receives his award and is presenting a keynote address at the 2019 Joint Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology/European Conference on Computational Biology held in Basel, Switzerland on July 21-25, 2019.

This contribution focusses on Oreste Ghisalba's pioneering activities in both fundamental as well as applied research in biocatalysis and his work on building bridges not only between biotechnology and chemistry, but also culturally, geographically and between academia and industry. His scientific work published in journals, books and conferences will be reviewed and his teaching at ETH Zurich and the University of Basel will be highlighted. Furthermore, an appreciation will be given of his broad knowledge and vision in shaping the activities of the Swiss Coordination Committee Biotechnology (SKB), the Swiss-Japanese Meetings in Biotechnology, conferences and research programs such as the Swiss Priority Program Biotechnology (SPP Biotech) of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
