An Interview with Mansi Srivastava

Mansi Srivastava is a John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Natural Sciences at Harvard University. This year, she was awarded the Elizabeth D. Hay New Investigator Award by the Society of Developmental Biology, which recognizes new group leaders who have performed outstanding research in developmental biology during the early stages of their independent career. Mansi's research focusses on investigating wound response and stem cell biology during regeneration in an evolutionary context. We talked to Mansi to discover how she feels about receiving this award, and about her career and her activities outside of the lab.

BrJAC mourns the death of Prof. Dr. Miguel Valcárcel Cases and recognizes his great contribution to Analytical Chemistry and Science around the World

Who has not seen or heard about books such as Analytical Chemistry: A Modern Approach to Analytical Science, Principles of Analytical Chemistry: A Textbook, or Foundations of Analytical Chemistry: A Teaching-Learning Approach, or about flow injection analysis-FIA, and sequential injection analysis-SIA? These are, in fact, some contributions from Prof. Miguel Valcárcel Cases, at the University of Córdoba-Spain, who leave us on 9th January 2022 at the age of 75. Prof. Valcárcel was Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Córdoba, Vice-Rector for academic guidance and teaching and Vice-Rector for quality, as well as the first Director of the Andalusian Institute of Fine Chemistry and Nanochemistry since 1994. Born in Barcelona (Spain), Prof. Valcárcel was a graduate of the University of Seville where also obtained his Ph.D., and was an assistant teacher until 1975. He was an associate professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Faculty of Science of Palma de Mallorca in 1975, an institution where he was also Dean and full professor at the University of Cordoba in the year 1976. He was also President of the Analytical Division of the European Federation of Chemical Societies and was a member for 4 years of the High-Level Expert Group of the European Union's Growth Program. Valcárcel received the Spanish national Enrique Moles prize for Chemical Science and Technology (2005), the Maimónides prize for scientific-technical research from the Junta de Andalucia (1992), and the Solvay Research Prize in Chemical Sciences from the CEOE Foundation (1997). He has the Robert Boyle Medal from the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK, 2004), the Enrich Planquette Prize from the Austrian Chemical Society (1996), the Gold Medal from the University of Warsaw (2000), and the Medal from the Portuguese Chemical Society (2000). He also received the distinction of Cordoba citizen of the year 2006 in the education/research section, and the Averroes de Oro-Cuidad de Córdoba medal in 2006 for his scientific trajectory. He was also awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Valencia (2010) and the European DAC-EuChMS (Division of Analytical Chemistry of the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences) award in recognition of his scientific and teaching career (2015). He was the author of ca. 700 papers, published 9 scientific books, and co-authored 15 chapters of multi-author books. Owner of a unique vitality and a very accurate vision of Analytical Chemistry, Prof. Valcárcel contributed to the formation of dozens of students, of which he was extremely proud, and some of them are today Full professors spread all over the world. The Brazilian Journal of Analytical Chemistry mourns his death, and through this simple tribute, recognizes his great contribution to Analytical Chemistry and science around the world.

Development of higher education in Russian regions

Study was devoted to the assessment of indicators characterizing the number and structure of research and teaching staff at universities and other institutions of higher education in the regions of Russia. These indicators were the number of teachers working in higher education, per thousand residents and per hundred students, proportion of professors and associate professors in the whole number of teachers. Research used official statistical information for 82 regions of Russia. We used density functions of normal distribution as models. Study showed that on average, there was a little more than one teacher working in higher education organizations per thousand residents. It is proved that on average, every seventh teacher in all regions held the position of professor. Approximately two-thirds of all teachers held associate professor positions, there were five teachers per one hundred students.

Introduction. In 2019, thanks to Dani Savelli, Associate Professor of the University of Toulouse Jean Jaures (Toulouse, France) and Ms. Jacqueline Chasselut, the collection of archival materials of a Kalmyk emigrant family in France was received by the Archive of the Kalmyk Scientific Center. The collection contains unique documents testifying to the life of the Kalmyk diaspora abroad. The purpose of the article is to give a general overview of the collection, as well as to examine it as a source on the history of Kalmyk Buddhism. Results.The Zol´vanovs’ collection, now a part of the records of the Archive of the Kalmyk Scientific Center includes 66 items, such as photographs and copies of photographs, official and personal letters, postcards, Buddhist texts, and images of Buddhist deities (prints, photographs, and postcards). Thus, despite the relatively small size of the collection, it is an important source as an example of a Kalmyk family abroad both in terms of history of Russian emigration and of Buddhism of the Russian peoples. The article publishes some rare photographs illustrative of the ties between the Kalmyk emigrants settled in different parts of the world, as well as of their interaction with Tibetan monasteries.

The book under review presents the challenging and creative research endeavours concerning some peculiar characteristics of multicultural and multilingual communication in South African healthcare settings. The authors of this work – Claire Penn, a professor and director of the Health Communication Research Unit, and Jennifer Watermeyer, an associate professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, – focus on bridging the gap between the voices of the lifeworld and the voices of medicine via communication characterized by the complexities and pitfalls within culturally and linguistically diverse health care contexts. The research under review is aimed at analyzing the cognitive space of professional medical communication in healthcare settings for applying the results in practice. Research of the cross-language interactions in healthcare facilities (using the evidence from South African medical settings) certainly contributes a lot to establishing an adequate cultural brokers’ role in the professional communication and to describing methods aimed at modifying interactions between a healthcare professional and a patient, which taken together lead to the improvement of medical communication in general. This book is a reasonably valuable source of essential knowledge for both healthcare professionals, linguists, discourse analysis researchers, medical educators and practitioners, and for those people who are interested in the specificities of communication research projects in terms of professional medical discourse on the global scale.

Review of the textbook ‘Introduction to Museum Studies and Monument Studies’

Introduction to Museum and Monument Studies book edited by Professor Olena Honcharova, DSc in Cultural Studies, and Associate Professor Serhii Pustovalov, DSc in History, is devoted to topical issues of museum and monument protection, museum studies history and theory, museum staff archaeology training, legislative support for the museum industry, examination of historical and cultural values; presents the views of leading Ukrainian and world scientists and experts on solving current problems in this area. The book is addressed to students, graduate students of field-oriented higher education institutions, museum and heritage conservation staff.
