An experimental system simulating the dynamic behavior of a space manipulator is illustrated in this paper. It is constructed for the purpose of technological demonstration and performance evaluation of space robot. The system consists of a model of space robot having dual manipulators, suspension system, and control system. The model is hung by wire at each joint of the manipulator to cancel the effect of the gravitational force on the ground. The value of wire tension is maintained constant to provide a ground simulation of the dynamic behavior of the manipulator in space. Accelerometers are employed to evaluate the micro-gravity condition for the present experimental device. The dynamics of the twolink manipulator with rigid link is analyzed numerically and experimentally, employing the present facility through the inspection of their dynamic features. In the present paper, the motion of the manipulator is restricted in the vertical plane as the first stage of study. The motion of a free-flying robot is also simulated in the experiment. The results of the numerical simulation and ,the experiment are presented to show the sufficient capability of the ground simulation to study dynamcal behavior of the manipulator in space.

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the existence of two sets of factors societal institutions and management control systems’ (MCS) characteristics in the UAE business entities. Subsequently, this paper empirically examines the bilateral and the multivariate associations between the two sets. The societal institutions include six factors categorised in three main groups: cultural conventions, state structures and policies and skill development and control. The MCS characteristics consist of four factors which are: reliance on formal rules, control over the behaviour of employees, involvement of subordinates in target setting and performance evaluation and scope of information used in performance evaluation. Design/methodology/approach – Whitley’s model (1999) is adopted in the UAE business environment and the analyses are performed at the organisational level. Qualified accounting officials and managers are surveyed. The Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman’s partial correlation and multiple regression are used for data analyses. Findings – Findings reveal the characteristics of the UAE societal institutions and the MCS in UAE organisations. They also reveal significant associations among four of the societal institution factors and most of the MCS characteristics. The results highlight the role played by the government structures and policies group in influencing the MCS characteristics in the UAE organisations. However, these results do not entirely agree with Whitley’s model. Research limitations/implications – The results of this study are restricted by the typical constraints associated with the survey method. The obtained results have implications for researchers and managers in facilitating the understanding of the relations among the various societal institutions and the MCS characteristics. Originality/value – This research, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, provides significant new empirical evidence into the relation between societal institutions and MCS characteristics in a non-Western economy.

Integrated Communication and Control Systems (ICCS), recently introduced and analyzed in a series of papers [1–7], are applicable to complex dynamical processes like advanced aircraft, spacecraft, automotive, and manufacturing processes. Time-division-multiplexed computer networks are employed in ICCS for exchange of information between spatially distributed plant components as well as for coordination of the diverse control and decision-making functions. Unfortunately, an ICCS network introduces randomly varying, distributed delays within the feedback loops in addition to the digital sampling and data processing delays. These network-induced delays degrade the system dynamic performance, and are a source of potential instability. This two-part paper presents the synthesis and performance evaluation of a stochastic optimal control law for ICCS. In this paper, which is the first of two parts, a state feedback control law for ICCS has been formulated by using the dynamic programming and optimality principle on a finite-time horizon. The control law is derived on the basis of a stochastic model of the plant which is augmented in state space to take into account the effects of randomly varying delays in the feedback loop. The second part [8] presents numerical analysis of the control law and its performance evaluation by simulation of the flight dynamic model of an advanced aircraft.

We present a framework for integrating profit variance analysis and capacity costing to provide better managerial information. The framework expands traditional variance analysis to incorporate planned and unplanned changes in inventory levels and the use of practical capacity to determine overhead rates. The framework has practical value because effective cost management and performance evaluation require ascertaining the costs (effects on profit) associated with capacity and the manner in which it is being used. Pedagogical value stems from connecting concepts underlying the choice of a denominator volume to set overhead rates, the profit effects of inventory changes, and variance analysis. By virtue of its generality, the framework enhances the value of capacity costing and profit variance analysis for management planning and control.
