Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze gender differences in the use of legal substances as alcohol and tobacco in adolescence. The sample, collected in five centers of secondary education, was composed by 352 adolescents of both sexes. The results showed that the profile of using this type of substances has changed.Decades ago it seemed that only men consumed these substances. At the moment not significant statistical differences have been found between both sexes in this type of behaviours. This fact is in harmony with the phase 3 enunciated by Lopez, Collishaw and Piha (1994), who explain theoretically the dynamic of the addiction to tobacco in the developmental countries. It is recommended to continue in this line of research with the purpose of developing more effective programs of intervention.

This paper considers the effect of income on the risk of having the first births in Sweden from 1968 to 2009. Variations by gender are given particular atention. The study follows men and women from the moment they turn 18 until they enter parenthood and it is based on register-based data covering the entire population of Sweden. Complementary log-log models show that there is a positive association between income and the risk of childbearing. The association gets stronger over time and the differences between men and women diminish. Gender differences appear when the income effect is related to the demand for work in the economy. An income above the median does not increase the risk of childbearing for women when the demand for work is relatively high.

A reflection on the main educational reforms of recent years in Mexico is addressed, briefly describing which and how many have been, culminating with the recent 2019 Educational Reform. We point out, the fact that little information exists on the impact that the implementation of the reforms in the country has had, commenting on some of the published reports that analyze the previous 2013 Educational Reform. Derived from this, it is explained what an educational policy is and how in Mexico at the moment, there is no official document about the educational policy for the current six-year term and based on the new reform, and a brief analysis is presented on non-achievement in mathematics in higher secondary education. Consigning the urgency of designing educational policies that address, among others, the problem of low academic performance at this educational level.
