Abstract Objective Euphorbia hirta , Citrus aurantifolia and Heterotis rotundifolia are commonly used in Benin in the treatment of infectious diseases. The aim of this study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties of ethanolic extracts of these plants. The study was performed on wistar rats with 200 mg/kg b.w.Results Administration of these extracts prevents edema inflammatory induced by 2% formalin in rat paw. Inhibition percentages of edema vary between 23.67% and 86.76% for the three extracts. These extracts have similar anti-inflammatory activity (p> 0.05) to that of diclofenac at 50 mg/kg. Analgesic activity show that these extracts inhibit very significantly (p<0.001) the pain induced by 3% acetic acid and the highest inhibition percentage is 60.34% (Citrus aurantifolia ). This percentage is like to that of acetylsalicylic acid (67.35%) administered at the same dose. Likewise, these extracts attenuate significantly (p <0.05) the thermal pain induced by tail immersion of each rat in hot water at 50°C. Indeed, these extracts, reduces very significantly (p <0.001) pyrexia induced by 20% beer yeast suspension in rats and they have similar effect (p> 0.05) to that of acetylsalicylic acid at the fourth hour. These results prove, some traditional therapeutic indications of these plants.

Background/Objective: Euphorbia hirta, Citrus aurantifolia and Heterotis rotundifolia are commonly used in Benin in the treatment of infectious diseases. The aim of this study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties of ethanolic extracts of these plants. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on 30 wistar rats placed in 6 work lots. A positive control lot having received diclofenac and a negative control lot having received physiological water were used. The ethanolic extract of the plants was used at a dose of 200 mg / kg bw. The model of inflammatory edema of the rat paw induced by 2% formalin was used. Analgesic activity was assessed by the pain method induced by 3% acetic acid and the tail immersion method with wistar rats. The antipyretic effect was evaluated on pyrexia induced by brewer's yeast at 20% with wistar rats. Results: After injection of formalin to animals, inflammatory reaction was almost immediate with appearance of classic signs of acute local inflammation (Redness, pain, heat and edema) at the five experimental groups. This inflammatory reaction occurs in two phases. The first phase occurs between 0 and 2 hours after injection of phlogogenic agent and the second phase, initiated after two hours extending to the fifth hour and even beyond. Administration of these extracts prevents edema inflammatory and inhibition percentages of edema vary between 23.67% and 86.76% for the three extracts. These extracts have similar anti-inflammatory activity (p> 0.05) to that of diclofenac at 50 mg/kg. Analgesic activity show that these extracts inhibit very significantly (p<0.001) chemical pain induced by acetic acid and the highest inhibition percentage is 60.34% (Citrus aurantifolia). This percentage is like to that of acetylsalicylic acid (67.35%) administered at the same dose. Likewise, these extracts attenuate significantly (p <0.05) thermal pain induced by tail immersion of each rat in hot water at 50°C. Indeed, these extracts, reduces very significantly (p <0.001) pyrexia induced by 20% beer yeast suspension in rats and they have similar effect (p> 0.05) to that of acetylsalicylic acid at the fourth hour. Conclusion: These results show that the plants studied have the pharmacological properties evaluated. These results justify the use of these plants in traditional medicine.

The present study was aimed to evaluate anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities of gymnemic acid (GA) in Wistar rats. The different doses of GA were tested for their anti-inflammatory in carrageenaninduced rat paw oedema animal model by using buzzer assisted plethysmograph and antinociceptive activities by tail immersion screening model in organ bath, respectively. It was found that GA at the dose of 100 and 150 mg/kg, p.o, significantly (P<0.01) inhibited the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and significantly (P<0.01) suppressed the threshold pain of rat by tail immersion method. GA showed significant anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities at 2nd and 3rd hr. Further, to know the possible mode of action, we evaluated the effect of GA on castor oil-induced diarrhea. The frequency of stool formation was reduced due to GA in castor oil-induced diarrhea, perhaps due to suppression of prostaglandin, suggesting anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities. The current findings demonstrate that the administration of GA at the dose of 100 and 150 mg/kg, by oral route produced significant anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects in Wistar rats.

Moringa oleifera is a potent medicinal plant in the Indian system of medicine. It is used in treatment of eye infections, arthritis, fever and as aphrodisiac. In the present study, qualitative chemical tests confirmed the presence of glycosides, amino acids, phytosterols, carbohydrates and phenolic compounds. The petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methonolic extracts of leaves of Moringa oleifera were studied for its analgesic activity using tail immersion method, anti-pyretic activity by brewer’s yeast induced pyrexia method and anti-inflammatory activity by carragenean induced rat paw oedema method on healthy wistar rats. It was observed that among all the extracts, methanolic extract produced significant effects.

The purpose of the review is to summarize current literature data and the results of our own research on the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of acetylsalicylic acid, as well as the physiological mechanisms underlying them. This acid is the most studied reference representative of salicylates, which is convenient to consider the physiological effects characteristic in general for this group of chemical and medicinal products. Acetylsalicylic acid has analgesic properties against thermal pain and pain caused by electrical stimuli, as well as a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect. The realization of these properties depends on the peculiarities of aspirin metabolism in the body, ion and synaptic mechanisms for controlling the functional state of the cell, neurotransmitter systems of the сentral nervous system, and mechanisms of peripheral and сentral analgesia. Analgesic properties of acetylsalicylic acid founded not only in normal, but also in ultra-small doses. Various physical and especially chemical factors significantly change their effects. This increases the interest in studying the analgesic activity of salicylates and their physiological mechanisms, since such studies can serve as a basis for creating new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with low toxicity and high safety for patients, and improve the strategy of their practical use. Currently, the most detailed study of the physiological mechanism of analgesic and anti-inflammatory action of aspirin and its main metabolite – salicylic acid. However, it should be note that despite the abundance of existing data obtained in scientific studies of the effects of aspirin and its practical use, there are a number of unexplained aspects of the action of this drug, the mechanism of which has not yet been deciphered. The continuing interest in the effects and mechanisms of action of this drug and in connection with the expansion of its use evidenced by a consistently high number of scientific publications on aspirin in the most famous foreign and domestic publications. At the same time, the number of publications about aspirin is an order of magnitude higher than about any other drug known to humanity.

The dynamics of the acute inflammatory response was observed in the experiment modeling caragenin-induced rat paw inflammation. The changes in the volume of damaged limb (paw edema) and indices of free radical oxidation were registered. Acetylsalicylic acid in the dose of 100 mg/kg was shown to reduce the development of inflammation. Hypoxen and metaprot in the dose of 50 mg/kg have got low anti-inflammatory activity, but potentiated the effect of acetylsalicylic acid. Simultaneous enteral administration of hypoxen and metaprot with the acetylsalicylic acid during the treatment with caragenin the powerful anti-inflammatory effect was marked, it was presented with a significant decrease in the parameters of inflammation recorded and rapid recovery of the damaged limb. The combination of hypoxen with acetylsalicylic acid was the most effective one.

Combretum glutinosum Perr. Ex DC (COMBRETACEAE) is a traditional medicinal plant, widely distributed in Senegal and Africa. The aim of that study was to investigate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of two triterpenes, betulonic acid (DN7) and cabraleone (DN12), isolated from the leaves of Combretum glutinosum. Experiments were performed in acetic acid-induced contortions in mice and carrageenan rat paw oedema. DN7 (3 mg/kg, per os) and DN12 (3 mg/kg, per os) significantly prevent contortions in mice. The number of contortions is respectively 30±10 and 32±7 versus 72.6±6.64 in control group (p<0.05, n=5). DN7 (3 mg/kg, per os) significantly prevented the increased rat paw oedema (31.84±6.76 vs 92.72±6.05%) (p<0.05, n=5). DN12 (10 mg/kg, per os) induced rat paw oedema prevention similar to that of acetylsalicylic acid (10 mg/kg, per os) administered in the same conditions (29.28±5.88 vs 30.96±7.25%; ns, n=5). The analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of triterpenes isolated from C. glutinosum leaves are similar to those of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such acetylsalicylic acid, justifying the use of this plant in traditional medicine to manage pain and inflammation.

In the experiment in a model of acute formalin-induced inflammation of rat paw, the changes of size of the affected limbs (paw edema) and parameters of leukogram were registered. The anti-inflammatory effect of antihypoxants (amtizol, hesperidin, hypoxen, metaprot) was investigated. It has been shown that hypoxen 50 mg/kg have weak anti-inflammatory activity, but potentiate the effect of nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs. At simultaneous enteral administration of hypoxen with acetylsalicylic acid or diclofenac, evident anti-inflammatory effect was marked, that was manifested by significant reduction in registered inflammation symptoms.
