Abstract Automatic target detection plays a major role in automated war operations. The key concept behind automated target detection is military objects recognition from the captured images. For object recognition in the given image, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a powerful classification network. But in general CNNs are trained for general object recognition. But, the performance of CNN depends mainly on the size of the training set. The size of the training data is generally available in less proportion for military objects due to its operational and security issues. Hence the performance of CNN may degrade sharply. To address the issue of military objects, a relatively new neural network architecture called Capsule Network (CapsNet) is introduced. Hence, in this article, a variant of CapsNet called Multi-level CapsNet framework is projected for military object recognition under the case of small training set. The introduced framework of this paper is validated on a dataset of military objects which are collected from the internet. The dataset contains particularly five military objects and the similar civil ones. The proposed framework demonstrates a large improvement of 96.54% of accuracy for military object recognition. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework can accomplish a high recognition precision, superior to many other algorithms such as conventional Support Vector Machines and transfer learning based CNNs.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being widely utilized for various missions: in both civilian and military sectors. Many of these missions demand UAVs to acquire artificial intelligence about the environments they are navigating in. This perception can be realized by training a computing machine to classify objects in the environment. One of the well known machine training approaches is supervised deep learning, which enables a machine to classify objects. However, supervised deep learning comes with huge sacrifice in terms of time and computational resources. Collecting big input data, pre-training processes, such as labeling training data, and the need for a high performance computer for training are some of the challenges that supervised deep learning poses. To address these setbacks, this study proposes mission specific input data augmentation techniques and the design of light-weight deep neural network architecture that is capable of real-time object classification. Semi-direct visual odometry (SVO) data of augmented images are used to train the network for object classification. Ten classes of 10,000 different images in each class were used as input data where 80% were for training the network and the remaining 20% were used for network validation. For the optimization of the designed deep neural network, a sequential gradient descent algorithm was implemented. This algorithm has the advantage of handling redundancy in the data more efficiently than other algorithms.

Mammalian behavior is typically monitored by observation. However, direct observation requires a substantial amount of effort and time, if the number of mammals to be observed is sufficiently large or if the observation is conducted for a prolonged period. In this study, machine learning methods as hidden Markov models (HMMs), random forests, support vector machines (SVMs), and neural networks, were applied to detect and estimate whether a goat is in estrus based on the goat’s behavior; thus, the adequacy of the method was verified. Goat’s tracking data was obtained using a video tracking system and used to estimate whether they, which are in “estrus” or “non-estrus”, were in either states: “approaching the male”, or “standing near the male”. Totally, the PC of random forest seems to be the highest. However, The percentage concordance (PC) value besides the goats whose data were used for training data sets is relatively low. It is suggested that random forest tend to over-fit to training data. Besides random forest, the PC of HMMs and SVMs is high. However, considering the calculation time and HMM’s advantage in that it is a time series model, HMM is better method. The PC of neural network is totally low, however, if the more goat’s data were acquired, neural network would be an adequate method for estimation.

This article presents an analysis of the effectiveness of object detection in digital images with the application of a limited quantity of input. The possibility of using a limited set of learning data was achieved by developing a detailed scenario of the task, which strictly defined the conditions of detector operation in the considered case of a convolutional neural network. The described solution utilizes known architectures of deep neural networks in the process of learning and object detection. The article presents comparisons of results from detecting the most popular deep neural networks while maintaining a limited training set composed of a specific number of selected images from diagnostic video. The analyzed input material was recorded during an inspection flight conducted along high-voltage lines. The object detector was built for a power insulator. The main contribution of the presented papier is the evidence that a limited training set (in our case, just 60 training frames) could be used for object detection, assuming an outdoor scenario with low variability of environmental conditions. The decision of which network will generate the best result for such a limited training set is not a trivial task. Conducted research suggests that the deep neural networks will achieve different levels of effectiveness depending on the amount of training data. The most beneficial results were obtained for two convolutional neural networks: the faster region-convolutional neural network (faster R-CNN) and the region-based fully convolutional network (R-FCN). Faster R-CNN reached the highest AP (average precision) at a level of 0.8 for 60 frames. The R-FCN model gained a worse AP result; however, it can be noted that the relationship between the number of input samples and the obtained results has a significantly lower influence than in the case of other CNN models, which, in the authors’ assessment, is a desired feature in the case of a limited training set.

AbstractAutomated detection of complex animal behaviors remains a challenging problem in neuroscience, particularly for behaviors that consist of disparate sequential motions. Grooming, a prototypical stereotyped behavior, is often used as an endophenotype in psychiatric genetics. Using mouse grooming behavior as an example, we develop a general purpose neural network architecture capable of dynamic action detection at human observer-level performance and operate across dozens of mouse strains with high visual diversity. We provide insights into the amount of human annotated training data that are needed to achieve such performance. We survey grooming behavior in the open field in 2500 mice across 62 strains, determine its heritable components, conduct GWAS to outline its genetic architecture, and perform PheWAS to link human psychiatric traits through shared underlying genetics. Our general machine learning solution that automatically classifies complex behaviors in large datasets will facilitate systematic studies of mechanisms underlying these behaviors.

Abstract Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a topic that has gained interest over the years for its role in bridging the gap between Human and Machine interactions. This study explores the potential of real time FER modelling, to be integrated in a closed loop system, to help in treatment of children suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The aim of this study is to show the differences between implementing Traditional machine learning and Deep learning approaches for FER modelling. Two classification approaches were taken, the first approach was based on classic machine learning techniques using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) for feature extraction, with a k-Nearest Neighbor and a Support Vector Machine model as classifiers. The second approach uses Transfer Learning based on the popular “Alex Net” Neural Network architecture. The performance of the approaches was based on the accuracy of randomly selected validation sets after training on random training sets of the Oulu-CASIA database. The data analyzed shows that traditional machine learning methods are as effective as deep neural net models and are a good compromise between accuracy, extracted features, computational speed and costs.

With the development of low-cost RGB-D (Red Green Blue-Depth) sensors, RGB-D object recognition has attracted more and more researchers’ attention in recent years. The deep learning technique has become popular in the field of image analysis and has achieved competitive results. To make full use of the effective identification information in the RGB and depth images, we propose a multi-modal deep neural network and a DS (Dempster Shafer) evidence theory based RGB-D object recognition method. First, the RGB and depth images are preprocessed and two convolutional neural networks are trained, respectively. Next, we perform multi-modal feature learning using the proposed quadruplet samples based objective function to fine-tune the network parameters. Then, two probability classification results are obtained using two sigmoid SVMs (Support Vector Machines) with the learned RGB and depth features. Finally, the DS evidence theory based decision fusion method is used for integrating the two classification results. Compared with other RGB-D object recognition methods, our proposed method adopts two fusion strategies: Multi-modal feature learning and DS decision fusion. Both the discriminative information of each modality and the correlation information between the two modalities are exploited. Extensive experimental results have validated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In recent years, growing interest in deep learning neural networks has raised a question on how they can be used for effective processing of high-dimensional datasets produced by hyperspectral imaging (HSI). HSI, traditionally viewed as being within the scope of remote sensing, is used in non-invasive substance classification. One of the areas of potential application is forensic science, where substance classification on the scenes is important. An example problem from that area—blood stain classification—is a case study for the evaluation of methods that process hyperspectral data. To investigate the deep learning classification performance for this problem we have performed experiments on a dataset which has not been previously tested using this kind of model. This dataset consists of several images with blood and blood-like substances like ketchup, tomato concentrate, artificial blood, etc. To test both the classic approach to hyperspectral classification and a more realistic application-oriented scenario, we have prepared two different sets of experiments. In the first one, Hyperspectral Transductive Classification (HTC), both a training and a test set come from the same image. In the second one, Hyperspectral Inductive Classification (HIC), a test set is derived from a different image, which is more challenging for classifiers but more useful from the point of view of forensic investigators. We conducted the study using several architectures like 1D, 2D and 3D convolutional neural networks (CNN), a recurrent neural network (RNN) and a multilayer perceptron (MLP). The performance of the models was compared with baseline results of Support Vector Machine (SVM). We have also presented a model evaluation method based on t-SNE and confusion matrix analysis that allows us to detect and eliminate some cases of model undertraining. Our results show that in the transductive case, all models, including the MLP and the SVM, have comparative performance, with no clear advantage of deep learning models. The Overall Accuracy range across all models is 98–100% for the easier image set, and 74–94% for the more difficult one. However, in a more challenging inductive case, selected deep learning architectures offer a significant advantage; their best Overall Accuracy is in the range of 57–71%, improving the baseline set by the non-deep models by up to 9 percentage points. We have presented a detailed analysis of results and a discussion, including a summary of conclusions for each tested architecture. An analysis of per-class errors shows that the score for each class is highly model-dependent. Considering this and the fact that the best performing models come from two different architecture families (3D CNN and RNN), our results suggest that tailoring the deep neural network architecture to hyperspectral data is still an open problem.

In this work, we present an image segmentation algorithm based on the convolutional neural network framework where the scale space theory is incorporated in the course of training procedure. The construction of data augmentation is designed to apply the scale space to the training data in order to effectively deal with the variability of regions of interest in geometry and appearance such as shape and contrast. The proposed data augmentation algorithm via scale space is aimed to improve invariant features with respect to both geometry and appearance by taking into consideration of their diffusion process. We develop a segmentation algorithm based on the convolutional neural network framework where the network architecture consists of encoding and decoding substructures in combination with the data augmentation scheme via the scale space induced by the heat equation. The quantitative analysis using the cardiac MRI dataset indicates that the proposed algorithm achieves better accuracy in the delineation of the left ventricles, which demonstrates the potential of the algorithm in the application of the whole heart segmentation as a compute-aided diagnosis system for the cardiac diseases.
