Abstract In the present paper, we studied possibility of observation and detection of nonlinear optical effects in free space. We studied four wave mixing process in which signal is generated opposite to the direction of probe beam. We observed that large number of photons are generated in signal beam, which should be detectable.

We develop theoretical background for the new nonlinear optical phenomenon of narrowly directed monochromatic IR conical emission which has been recently observed when 248-nm UV filaments propagate in xenon (V. D. Zvorykin, et al., Laser Phys. Lett. 13, 125404 (2016)). We treat it as coherent stimulated four-wave mixing process in which two pump KrF laser photons are converted into the coupled pair of resonance IR(828 nm) and VUV (147 nm) photons through 5p5(2P3/2)6p[1/2]0→5p5(2P3/2)6s[3/2]1o and 5p5(2P3/2)6s[3/2]1o→1S0 transitions. We explore the coherent interaction regime which proceeds at a time scale shorter than transverse relaxation time T2. The momentum and energy conservation laws determine the characteristic angle of conical emission. We find that the threshold of this coherent process is determined by the KrF laser pump pulse area.

ABSTRACTResonant optical excitation of fractal clusters generates dipolar eigenmodes which are extremely localized within areas much smaller than the wavelength. The localization occurs due to the fractal morphology and accounts for the very high local fields leading to the huge enhancement of various optical effects. In particular, Rayleigh and Raman light scattering and, especially, nonlinear optical processes, such as 2-photon photoemission and degenerate four-wave mixing, are strongly enhanced in fractal clusters. The spatial distribution of the modes shows the frequency and polarization selectivity.

The new photochromic polymers based on methacrylic azoesters were synthesized. The azobenzene side chains of obtained polymers contain different groups of both acceptor and donor nature as well as flexible alkyl spacer. The third order nonlinear optical susceptibilities (3) of the studied solutions were measured by degenerating four wave mixing (DFWM) method. As a result, the enhancement of the molecular conjugation and the high NLO chromophore concentration in the molecular chain contribute much to heightening the third-order NLO effect. The electronic effect of the substituent on the azobenzol group and the push–pull electronic structure contributes much to enhancing the NLO property

In this paper, we analyze and discuss instabilities and self-oscillations of four-wave mixing in two-component Bose–Einstein condensates with two- and three-body interatomic interactions. The model is very accurately described in the mean-field approximation by the cubic–quintic Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The relation between the input and output field intensities is multivalued and the effects of the quintic nonlinearity on the self-oscillations of the system are studied. We have also found that the magnitude of the signal beam increases with the increase of the intensity of the probe beam, up to a saturated value, then it decreases with the increase of the intensity of the probe beam. We have shown that the three-body interatomic interactions enhance this saturated value.
