Abstract Background: The non-HDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol (NHDLC/HDLC) ratio is closely related to a variety of dyslipidemia-related diseases. This study aimed to inspect the relationship between the NHDLC/HDLC ratio and non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) in children and adolescents.Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, a total of 7,759 eligible Chinese children and adolescents (5,692 boys and 2,067 girls) received routine medical examinations. The anthropometric and laboratory data of the subjects were collected. NAFLD was diagnosed by liver ultrasonography. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed on the NHDLC/HDLC ratio, NHDLC, HDLC and NAFLD. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was exploited to compare the diagnostic significance of the above parameters for NAFLD.Results: The total prevalence of NAFLD was 4.36%, and the prevalence in boys was higher than that in girls (5.61% vs. 1.9%, P < 0.001). The prevalence of NAFLD was positively correlated with the NHDLC/HDLC ratio (P < 0.001). The binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the OR was 8.61 (95% CI, 5.90-12.57, P < 0.001) in tertile 3 (highest NHDLC/HDLC ratio) compared with tertile 1 (lowest NHDLC/HDLC ratio). After adjustment for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), uric acid (UA), total bilirubin (TB), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), the OR for tertile 3 (OR=1.83, 95% CI, 1.04-3.22, P = 0.035) was still significantly higher than that of tertile 1. The area under the curve (AUC) of the NHDLC/HDLC ratio of boys was 0.787, which was significantly greater than that of NHDLC and HDLC (0.719 and 0.726, P < 0.001). For girls, the AUC of the NHDLC/HDLC ratio was 0.763, which was also significantly greater than that of NHDLC (0.661, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the cutoff point of the NHDLC/HDLC ratio was 2.475 in boys and 2.695 in girls. In addition, the AUC of the NHDLC/HDLC ratio was 0.761 in subjects with normal ALT levels (ALT ≤ 40 U/L), which was significantly higher than that of NHDLC (0.680, P < 0.001) and HDLC (0.724, P = 0.007). Background:Fibromyalgia (FM) is a condition characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances. Etiopathogenesis remains unclear; however, growing data regarding the effect of psychosocial factors on disease etiopathogenesis have drawn attention. Psychosocial elements such as type D personality and low level of self-esteem might increase disease burden (1). Accordingly, many researchers so far, have examined psychological parameters in FM and a limited number of studies focused on the personality type among patients with FM (2-5).Objectives:The current study aimed to investigate type D personality and self-esteem in patients with FM.Methods:Female patients with fibromyalgia and age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Type D personality was evaluated by using the type D scale (DS-14). The Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES) was used to assess self-esteem and psychosomatic symptoms. Psychological status was evaluated by the Beck Depression and Beck Anxiety Inventories. Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) was performed to assess functional impairment and health status in patients with FM. The potential confounders of type D personality were evaluated by binary logistic regression analysis.Results:Seventy patients with FM and 60 controls were included. Type D personality was observed in 58.6% of the patients and in 21.7% of the control group (p<0.001). When compared to patients with non-type D personality, those with type D personality revealed lower self-esteem and poorer health status (p<0.05 for both), higher anxiety and depression scores (p<0.001 for both). According to binary logistic regression analysis, depression (β=1.178, Cl 95% 1.055−1.316, p=0.004) and lower education level (β=0.818, Cl 95% 0.682−0.982, p=0.031) were significantly related to type D personality in FM (Table 1).Conclusion:Type D personality is more common in female patients with FM when compared to healthy women. Patients with type D personality have lower level of self-esteem when compared to those with non-type D personality. Abstract Objective: This study sought to assess maternal growth monitoring knowledge and its effect on stunting, wasting and underweight among children 0-18 months in the Tamale Metropolis.An analytical cross-sectional study design, involving 340 mother-child pairs randomly selected from 4 health facilities in the Tamale Metropolis, was used. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on socio-demographic characteristics and maternal growth monitoring knowledge. Weight and length of children were taken to assess nutritional status (stunting, underweight and wasting). Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between maternal growth monitoring knowledge level and child nutritional status. Results: The study revealed that 87.6% of mothers had good knowledge on growth monitoring. The prevalence of stunting, underweight and wasting were 9.4%, 25.9% and 17.9% respectively. A binary logistic regression analysis revealed that there is no association between maternal growth monitoring knowledge and stunting [Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 0.593; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.170-2.067], underweight (AOR= 1.56; 95% CI: 0.697-3.612) and wasting (OR= 0.881; 95% CI: 0.414-1.876) among children 0-18 months in the Tamale Metropolis.

Objective: Voluntary HIV testing is one of the key strategies in the HIV/AIDS prevention and control program. New National Strategic Plan for 2016-2030 in Malaysia, adapt three zeros viz. ‘zero new infections of HIV/AIDS, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths’. This study aimed to determine the predictors of voluntary HIV testing in Sarawak. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 900 respondents (450 males and 450 females) from the state of Sarawak, aged 18 years and above, who were selected by gender-stratified multistage cluster sampling. Data were obtained by face-to-face interview using a pretested questionnaire. Binary logistic regression analysis was done to determine the potential predictors for voluntary HIV testing. Results: The prevalence of HIV testing was higher among female respondents (26%) compared to male respondents (14.2%), and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that household income more than MYR 1501 (p = 0.009), not living with a partner (p < 0.001) and discussion on HIV/AIDS (p = 0.019) appeared to be predictors for the male respondents, while, ethnicity was statistically significant for female respondents (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The utilisation of HIV testing was low in both males and females. Thus, the finding of this study could be considered when designing HIV education and screening program in Sarawak.

Abstract Background This study aimed to examine the relationships between dietary vitamin intakes and the risk of diabetes among Chinese adults. Methods This is a cross-sectional observational study. Demographic and anthropometric data along with information on dietary vitamin intakes were collected and eligible participants were recruited to complete a questionnaire. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the associations between dietary vitamin intakes and the risk of diabetes, with adjustment for potential confounders. We also evaluated non-linear dose-response relationships between dietary vitamin intakes and diabetes using adjusted restricted cubic splines. Results Of the 3106 eligible participants, 15.9% had prevalent diabetes, 19.0% in male and 13.7% in female, respectively. The median folate was significantly higher in diabetic patients than in controls (32.030 vs 27.600 µg), while median niacin was significantly lower (7.000 vs 7.900 mg). The binary logistic regression analysis also showed a significant association between dietary folate (Odds ratio (OR)=1.002; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.000-1.004; P=0.022) and niacin intakes (OR=0.965; 95% CI: 0.944-0.986; P=0.001) with the risk of diabetes after controlling for potential confounders. The plots of restricted cubic splines presented an atypical inverted U-shaped association between dietary folate intake and diabetes. Conclusions The data presented here showed that diabetics had a low intake of vitamins, especially B group vitamins. Dietary folate and niacin intakes tended to be independently related to the risk of diabetes. Nevertheless, this study is observational, and there yet to be large-scale randomized controlled trials which would increase the evidence of the findings.

Background: Injuries continue to rise among youth baseball players despite extensive research into prevention and the availability of throwing guidelines such as Pitch Smart. More research is needed to understand whether adherence to the current guidelines decreases injuries. Purpose: To understand the degree to which parents are aware of the Pitch Smart guidelines, whether parents adhere to the guidelines, and whether adherence results in decreased injuries in youth baseball players. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: An anonymous, internet-based survey consisting of 44 items was distributed to parents of adolescent baseball players affiliated with various youth baseball organizations across the midwestern United States; 15 items on the survey served as assessment questions of the Pitch Smart guidelines. Absolute and percentage correct scores were calculated and compared by use of a Student t test. A chi-square analysis was used to compare discrete data. A binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine whether showcase participation predicted player injury. Results: A total of 853 parents completed the survey. The mean ± SD age of the players on whom parents reported was 11.37 ± 3.5 years (range, 6-20 years). Among the cohort, 422 players regularly pitched. Regarding Pitch Smart guidelines, the percentage of correct answers by parents was 55.44% ± 0.3% for a player with a reported injury history and 62.14% ± 0.2% for a player without an injury history ( P = .012). The number of correct answers was 8.03 ± 4.0 for the group with an injury history and 9.17 ± 3.2 for the group with no history of injury ( P = .004). Binary logistic regression analysis, which controlled for age, indicated that showcase participation ( P = .001, β = 1.043 ± 0.026, R2 = 0.178) was a significant predictor of player injury. Conclusion: Pitchers are at an increased risk of injury compared with nonpitchers. Parents who are knowledgeable about the Pitch Smart throwing guidelines and actively follow them are significantly less likely to have a child with an injury. Excessive showcase participation is predictive of player injury when the analysis controls for age.

Noise may have adverse effects on health and quality of life (QoL). This study assessed the association between noise exposure and QoL among people living near stone-mortar factories. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using 269 subjects. The data was collected using questionnaires, sound level meter, and a geographic information system technique. The statistical analysis was carried out using independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient test and multiple binary logistic regression analysis. The average noise in factory no. 2, 4, and 5 was found to be higher than the standard level of NIOSH at 85 dB(A) and OSHA at 90 dB(A) for an 8-hour TWA. The multiple binary logistic regression analysis showed that an increasing residential distance was associated with high noise exposure after adjusting for age, education, income, length of stay in community, and overall QoL. The local policy makers should be required to emphasize on the reduction of noise pollution in stone-mortar factories and health surveillance of the residential neighborhood.

Abstract Objective: Oxidative stress is assumed to be the underlying feature of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). To our knowledge, the mutual involvement of redox status homeostasis parameters [i.e., advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS) and oxidative-stress index (OSI)] and cardiometabolic biomarkers in subjects with NAFLD has not been examined yet. Accordingly, we aimed to investigate this potential relationship.Patients and Methods: A total of 122 subjects with NAFLD were compared with 56 participants without NAFLD. The diagnosis of NAFLD was confirmed by abdominal ultrasound. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were measured. OSI, Castelli’s Risk Index I (CRI-I) and Castelli’s Risk Index II (CRI-II) were calculated. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analysis were used to test the associations between oxidative stress and cardiometabolic markers, respectively and NAFLD. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to explore its mutual effect on NAFLD status.Results: Significant positive associations of CRI-I, CRI-II, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and AOPP with NAFLD were found. PCA analysis extracted 3 significant factors: Oxidative stress-cardiometabolic related factor (i.e., triglycerides, AOPP, HDL-c and HbA1c)-explained 36% of variance; Pro-oxidants related factor (i.e., TOS and PAB)-explained 17% of variance; and Antioxidants related factor (i.e., TAS)-explained 15% of variance of the tested parameters. Moreover, binary logistic regression analysis revealed significant predictive ability of Oxidative stress-cardiometabolic related factor (p<0.001) and Pro-oxidants related factor (p<0.05) towards NAFLD status.Conclusion: In addition to oxidative stress (i.e., determined by higher AOPP levels), dyslipidemia (i.e., determined by higher lipid indexes: CRI-I and CRI-II) and inflammation (determined by higher hsCRP) are independently related to NAFLD status. The mutual involvement of pro-oxidants (i.e., TOS and PAB), or the joint involvement of pro-oxidants (i.e., AOPP) and cardiometabolic parameters (i.e., HbA1c, triglycerides and HDL-c) can differentiate subjects with NAFLD from those individuals without this metabolic disorder. New studies are needed to validate our results in order to find the best therapeutic approach for NAFLD.
