Abstract In this paper, some compositions described by the general formula Pb(ZrxTi1-x)0.99Fe0.01O3 have been considered and investigated. The compositions considered have been obtained by solid state reaction technique, where x corresponds to 0.42, 0.52 and 0.58. Sintering has been performed for 2 hours at temperatures between 1100oC and 1250oC. The influence of the sintering temperature on the microstructure and on the hysteresis loops of Fe3+ doped Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 system has been investigated. The crystallographic phase and microstucture of the sintered compositions have been studied in detail using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The experimental results obtained by XRD have revealed that all the sintered samples have a perovskite structure. In order to correlate the behavior of the sintered materials to their microscopic structure, the domain structures have been defined by SEM. The dielectric properties, as relative dielectric permittivity (εr) and dielectric loss (tan δ) have been measured. The hysteresis loops at room temperature of all un-poled sintered compositions reveal a similar behaviour with “hard” PZT ceramics. The piezoelectric properties like electromechanical coupling factor (kp) have been investigated after polarization.

Giant electromechanical coupling factor of k31 mode over 86% was found for (100) Pb[(Zn1/3Nb2/3)0.91Ti0.09]O3 and (110) Pb[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.74Ti0.26]O3 single-crystal plates poled in the [100] and [110] directions, respectively. The P-E hysteresis loops in the single-crystal plates with giant k31 became asymmetric. Furthermore, the frequency response of impedance in these plates with giant k31 consisted of a single vibration in the length direction. A mechanism to realize giant k31 can be explained by the relationship between the crystal plane and poling direction. In addition, the existence of giant piezoelectric d31 constant was proven by the strain measurement as well as by the impedance measurement.

This study investigates the effects of the Zn/Ni composition ratio and doping materials on the piezoelectric properties of PZNN-PZT ceramics for the fabrication of piezoelectric ceramics with excellent characteristics. A soft relaxor was used to improve the electrical characteristics and sinterability. The ceramics were fabricated with a base composition ratio of 0.13Pb((Zn1–xNix)1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.87Pb(Zr0.5Ti0.5)O3. The columbite phase was formed by reacting NiO and Nb2O5, which have low reactivity, as the first calcination, and the columbite precursor method was applied for the second calcination with PbO. Although the pellet was produced by sintering at a relatively low temperature of 950 °C, we obtained a dense ceramic with a high density of 7.9 g/cm3 . To improve the quality factor in the composition with a Ni/(Ni + Zn) molar ratio of 0.1, the doping materials MnO2, Fe2O3, CuO, and Bi2O3 were added and their properties were confirmed. Pure perovskite phases were formed in the ceramics of all compositions and doping materials. In particular, the PZNN-PZT ceramics doped with 0.3 wt% MnO2 showed a piezoelectric coefficient of 348 pC/N, electromechanical coupling factor of 0.59, mechanical quality factor of 345, and Curie temperature of 316 °C, which are excellent piezoelectric characteristics.

(1-x) (K0.475Na0.475Li0.05)(Nb0.975Sb0.025)O3-xmolBiFeO3 (x=0, 0.002, 0.004, 0.006, 0.008) doped with 0.8mol%CuO lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the solid state reaction technique. X-ray diffraction patterns suggested that all the ceramics presented perovskite structure. The compositional dependence of the phase structure and the electrical properties of the ceramics were studied. The ceramic (x=0.002) near room temperature exhibited excellent electrical properties (piezoelectric constant d33=172pC/N, planar electromechanical coupling factor kp=0.43, and dielectric constant =418). A relatively high mechanical quality factor (Qm=200) was also obtained in this particular composition. All these results revealed that this system might become a promising candidate for lead-free piezoelectric materials.

Doping a small quantity of additive Bi2O3 is effective in suppressing the deliquescence of KNbO3 ceramics. When an optimized ball-milling process was included, dense and nondeliquescent KNbO3 ceramics were obtained by a conventional firing process. However, the presence of Bi prevented grain growth (<0.2 μm) and it was one of the causes of low ferroelectricity. Moreover, the insufficient resistivity made the poling treatment difficult. In order to improve the electric properties, a small quantity of additive MnCO3 was also doped into KNbO3 with 0.5 mass% Bi2O3. Codoping of KNbO3 with MnCO3 and Bi2O3 (abbreviated to KNBixMny; x = 0~1.0, y = 0~1.0 in mass%) improved the ferroelectricity of samples, and it also had an effect on the resistivity and densification of sintered bodies. Well-saturated P-E hysteresis loops were observed with any amount of Mn and the largest remanent polarization Pr was about 16 μC/cm2. The piezoelectric properties of KNBi0.5Mn0.3, which had the highest piezoelectricity in this study, are an electromechanical coupling factor k33 and piezoelectric constant d33 of 0.30 and 101 pC/N, respectively.

In the poling process of PZT ceramics, the poling temperature is a critical condition. When the poling temperature is too low, no matter how high is the poling field and how long is the poling time, the planar electromechanical coupling factor kpis lower. When the poling temperature is higher enough, the kpcan reach to a saturated value with a lower poling field and short poling time. The variation of dielectric constant with the poling conditions is the same as that of planar electromechanical coupling factor. When poling with a low temperature, the dielectric constant after poling is lower than 1400. When poling with higher temperature, no matter how high is the poling field and how long is the poling time, the dielectric constant after poling is higher than 1500.

Lead-free K0.5Na0.5NbO3-xwt% (0.4ZnO-0.6B2O3) ceramics were synthesized by conventional ceramics process. The co-doping of ZnO and B2O3 can decrease the sintering temperature of K0.5Na0.5NbO3 ceramics to 1000°C, and the samples show high relative density around 96%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals that Co-doping of ZnO and B2O3 induces lattice distortion. Liquid phase is observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which is resulted from the addition of ZnO and B2O3. The ceramics show better piezoelectric and dielectric properties with planar electromechanical coupling factor kp= 40.7%, piezoelectric constant d33=117pC/N, dielectric constant εT33/ε0=318.6, and loss tangenttanδ=0.034.

Bi2O3 doped (Bi0.5Na0.5)0.94Ba0.06TiO3 (BNBT6) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were fabricated by a conventional sintering technique. The effects of Bi2O3 on the piezoelectric properties and microstructures of the doped BNBT6 were investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that a solid solution was formed when Bi2O3 diffused into BNBT6 lattice and the crystal structure of the sintered hybrid changed from rhombohedral to tetragonal symmetry with increasing Bi2O3 amount. Piezoelectric and dielectric properties measurements revealed that doping Bi2O3 within a certain range enhanced the piezoelectric coefficient (d33), electromechanical coupling factor (kp), relative dielectric constant (ε33 T/ε0), and dielectric loss (tanδ). When 3mol% Bi2O3 was doped, both d33 and kp of the ceramics reached their maxima, 165pC/N and 24%, respectively.

The effect of AgSbO3on the piezoelectric properties of (K0.5Na0.5)0.95Li0.05NbO3was examined. The AgSbO3doped KNLN samples sintered at 1050°C showed the maximum values of the sintering density of 4.56 g/cm3compared to un-doped KNLN samples sintered at same temperature with 4.25 g/cm3. Moreover, the addition of AgSbO3enhanced the piezoelectric and dielectric properties. Piezoelectric constant (d33), the planar electromechanical coupling factor (kp) and the relative dielectric permittivity (K33T) increased up to 230pC/N, 43.5%, 1080, respectively, with addition of AgSbO3.

PZT-PMN ceramic system with presence of MnO2 contents were proposed and prepared using conventional sintering method as for piezoelectric transformer application. Phase formation and several dielectric and piezoelectric parameters were studied as a function of MnO2 concentration. The x-ray diffraction study revealed the tetragonal symmetry for all samples with MnO2 doping. To determine polarization, the P-E hysteresis loop were produced and the results indicated that entering of Mn4+ ions in the ceramic structure created large amount of oxygen vacancies and the consequent was observed as displacement of the loops to E axis. The obtained optimum parameter are d33 = 119 pC/N, kp = 0.207, Qm = 1669, tan = 0.0101, Pr = 20 μm/cm2 and Ec = 10 kV/cm.

The electrical properties and phase transition behavior of the sodium niobate-based solid solution (1-x)Li0.12Na0.88NbO3-xNa0.91Ba0.09Nb0.91Ti0.09O3 [(1-x)LNN12-xNNBT9] ceramics were investigated. The lattice constant changes became discontinuitous between LNNBT0.5 and LNNBT0.7. Moreover, the peak dielectric constant of LNNBT0.7 is twice that of LNNBT0.5. X-ray diffraction analysis and dielectric study confirmed that the different crystal phases of what are LNN-type rhombohedral (x=0), LNN-type orthorhombic (x=0.1, 0.3 and 0.5), NNBT-type orthorhombic (x= 0.7 and 0.9) and NNBT-type tetragonal (x= 1.0) phases. An electromechanical coupling factor of 0.244 was obtained for LNNBT0.7 whose composition is near the boundary between the LNN-type and NNBT-type orthorhombic phases.
