The present study was conducted with the aim of increasing storage duration of cucumber fruits by using eco-friendly edible biomaterials and nanotechnology. Hence, the effects of postharvest-applied lemongrass oil (LO) and propolis extract (PEx), alone or in combination with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), on the weight loss, fruit firmness, sensory index, chilling injury (CI), decay incidence (DI), and soluble solid concentration (SSC) of cucumber fruits were tested. Two different doses (0.2% and 0.5%) of both LO and PEx were tested in present study. Application of LO and PEx was performed by dipping the fruits into the solutions at 21 ± 1 °C for 3 minutes; after drying for 30 minutes, fruits were transferred to a cold room and kept at 4.5 ± 0.5 °C and 95% relative humidity (RH). Studies were continued for 24 days, and quality parameters were measured at 4-day intervals. Two-day shelf-life simulation was also applied to fruits after each interval, and the same quality parameters were observed. Results suggest that the combination of MAP bags with LO or PEx treatment provides better conditions for postharvest storage of cucumbers and that storage duration might be extended to 20 days. Fruits treated with LO or PEx and stored in MAP bags maintained weight and SSC, were firmer, showed lower DI, and expressed lower CI (P < 0.05) throughout storage.

The effects of MA packaging on nutritional value and quality of honey pomelo have been investigated during storage at 8 . Results show that 25μm-thick PE films maintained more suitable headspace gas concentrations for preservation of pomelo than 50μm-thick PE films and microperforated 25μm-thick PE films (control). The 25μm -thick PE films have the highest value on quality parameters, which were 12.2%, 0.9%, 47.1mg/100g and 44.8mg/100g for total soluble solid, titratable acidity, vitamin C and total phenolic content after 150 days of storage, respectively. This study suggests that MA packaging with 25μm-thick PE films show the best effects in maintaining the quality of honey pomelo during storage at 8 .

Okra possesses a short shelf-life which limits its marketability, thereby, the present study investigates the individual and combined effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the postharvest storage life of okra. The treated/ untreated okra samples were stored at ambient (i.e., 27 °C) and low (i.e., 7 °C) temperatures for eight and 20 days, respectively. Results revealed that the 1-MCP and/or MAP treatment successfully inhibited fruit softening, reduction in mucilage viscosity, and color degradation (hue angle, ∆E, and BI) in the product resulting in a longer period of shelf-life. However, MAP with or without 1-MCP was more effective to reduce weight loss in okra stored at both ambient and cold storage conditions. Additionally, ascorbic acid and total antioxidants were also retained in 1-MCP with MAP during cold storage. The 1-MCP in combination with MAP effectively suppressed respiration rate and ethylene production for four days and eight days at 27 °C and 7 °C temperature conditions, respectively. According to the results, relatively less chilling injury stress also resulted when 1-MCP combined with MAP. The combined treatment of okra pods with 1-MCP and MAP maintained the visual quality of the product in terms of overall acceptability for four days at 20 °C and 20 days at 7 °C.

Abstract In this study, we investigated the effects of two modified atmosphere packaging films [Osmolux (Osx) and Oriented PolyPropylene (OPP)] on the microbiological and the sensory qualities of ackee fruit (Blighia sapida Köenig) arils stored during eight days under two refrigerated temperatures, 5 ±1°C and 10 ±1°C. The control samples of ackee arils were packaged in a macro-perforated highdensity polypropylene film (MP). The results showed that mesophilic aerobic bacteria (MAB), yeasts and moulds were lower under OPP, although MAB of MP was lower at 5°C. At 10°C, the pH of the ackee arils stored in Osx and OPP did not vary significantly, but the pH ofMP showed an increase from 5.32 to 5.95 and 5.83 at 5°C and 10°C, respectively. Results also showed that under OPP, weight losses were lower and averaged 0.12%and 0.19%after eight days storage at 5°C and 10°C, respectively, while the sensory quality attributes were preserved up to six days. Conclusively, OPP showed better attributes for MAP storage of ackee arils under refrigerated temperatures, although none of the two films were effective to reduce the chilling injury after the eight days storage.

Abstract Objectives The study was conducted to prolong the shelf life of freshly harvested pomegranate fruits and to find out its physiochemical properties during storage. Materials and Methods Pomegranate fruits of variety ‘Bhagawa’ were stored in 200, 300 gauge high-density polyethylene (HDPE) package, and silicone membrane modified atmospheric storage system at ambient conditions and 10°C. Gas composition inside the package, texture, color, and overall quality parameters were evaluated at these two storage temperatures. The physico-chemical properties such as total soluble solids, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid content, total, reducing, and non-reducing sugars, and physiological loss in weight (PLW) were also determined. Results In ambient storage, the shelf life of pomegranate fruit was 10 days, whereas in modified atmosphere packaging (200 gauge HDPE, 300 gauge HDPE, and silicone membrane system), the shelf life of pomegranate fruits was extended up to 60, 60, 25 days at ambient and 96, 96, 65 days at 10°C temperature, respectively. Conclusions Among the 200, 300 gauge HDPE package, and silicone membrane system treatments T1, T5, and T8, respectively, were found better with respect to all the sensory and quality parameters studied.

Custard apple, a tropical fruit, is underutilized because of its poor storability. Researchers have worked on various aspects for improving the storage life of fruits; still its storage life is limited to few days. So to counteract this, an experiment was conducted to study the effect of modified atmosphere packaging using three different kinds of films along with low temperature storage at 8, 12 and 15 °C and observations were recorded at weekly interval. The study indicated an increasing trend in the respiration rate and ethylene production rate as well, and the rate increased with increase in storage temperature and duration. The physiological loss in weight in packed fruits showed a drastic reduction. Titratable acidity increased as storage duration while ascorbic acid shown exact reverse trend. There was significant increase in reducing sugar and total sugar as duration increased but rate was low in 8° C fruits.
