Abstract The oxidation state of iron in upper mantle minerals is widely used to constrain the Earth mantle's oxidation state. Previous studies showed high levels of ferric iron in high-pressure majoritic garnets and pyroxenes despite reducing conditions. To disentangle the effects of pressure and increasing oxygen fugacity on the Fe3+/ΣFe ratios of garnet and clinopyroxene, we performed high-pressure experiments at a pressure of 10 GPa in a 1000-ton Walker-type multi-anvil apparatus at the University of Münster. We synthesized majoritic garnets and clinopyroxenes with a total iron content close to natural mantle values at different oxygen fugacities, ranging from IW+4.7 to metal saturation at IW+0.9. We analyzed the iron oxidation state in garnets with the electron microprobe “flank method.” Furthermore, we investigated the oxidation state of iron in garnets and clinopyroxenes with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Although the flank method measurements are systematically lower than the EELS measurements, Fe3+/ΣFe obtained with both methods agree well within 2σ errors. The “flank method” has the advantage of being much faster and more easily to set up, whereas TEM-EELS has a much higher spatial resolution and can be applied to various non-cubic minerals such as orthopyroxenes and clinopyroxenes. We used our experimental results to compare two geobarometers that contain a term for ferric iron in garnet (Beyer and Frost 2017; Tao et al. 2018) with two geobarometers that do not account for ferric iron (Collerson et al. 2010; Wijbrans et al. 2016). We found that for garnets with low total Fe and Fe3+ (like many natural garnets), the pressures can be calculated without including the ferric iron content.

Current research at the University of Salento’s Department of Innovation Engineering aims to the development of the next generation of high-pressure pumps for Diesel common rail systems. In order to improve both performance and reliability, a better understanding of the mechanisms, underlying the fatigue behavior of high pressure reciprocating plunger pump, is necessary. Previous studies based on static and dynamic FEM simulations provided results to be confirmed by experimental tests. In this paper, we present an experimental approach to better assess the fatigue behavior of this critical component, toward an increase in both robustness, and speed and rail pressure. Based on the analysis of the worst contact conditions under service, the important parameters to be considered for the experimental set-up are isolated and selected; in particular the friction influence and the mutual position of the parts is crucial to establish the real stress state in the pump plunger.

Abstract The growing number of foreign applicants looking forward to getting education in Ukrainian medical universities makes us find the ways how to improve and make effective the pre-professional training system of foreign medical applicants for further education. The article deals with the issues of the history of formation and development of the preprofessional training system of foreign medical applicants in Ukraine. On the ground of the electronic databases of the official websites of higher educational establishments, the data on years of opening first offices of the dean, departments and preparatory faculties for foreign medical applicants in Ukrainian medical universities are analyzed and systematized. Also the data on the setting up preparatory faculties at other universities who carry out licensed training of foreign students of the medical profile are presented. The data on the operating and management of such institutions in the system of the University administration are generalized. It’s revealed that during the years of its functioning the pre-professional training has changed, in particular the system was commercialized and the institutions involved in training foreign applicants have been reorganized. The modern trends in teaching foreign medical students at the preparatory faculties of the Ukrainian medical universities are displayed. Based on the analysis of the data it is concluded that the system of the pre-professional training of foreign medical applicants was set up in the 50s-60s years of the twentieth century. During this time, some positive experience in the preparation of future international medical specialists has been gained. The system of the pre-professional training of foreign medical applicants has been comprehensively improved and an effective system of managing foreign medical applicants has been created.
