Friction Stir Spot Welding involves complex physical phenomena, which are very difficult to probe experimentally. In this regard, the numerical simulation may play a key role to gain insight into this complex thermo-mechanical process. It is often used to mimic specific experimental conditions to forecast outputs that may be substantial to analyse and elucidate the mechanisms behind the Friction Stir Spot Welding process. This welding technique uses frictional heat generated by a rotating tool to join materials. The heat generation mechanisms are governed by a combination of sliding and sticking contact conditions. In the numerical simulation, these contact conditions are thoroughly dependent on the used friction model. Hence, a successful prediction of the process relies on the appropriate selection of the contact model and parameters. This work aims to identify the pros and cons of different friction models in modelling combined sliding-sticking conditions. A three-dimensional coupled thermo-mechanical FE model, based on a Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation, was developed. Different friction models are adopted to simulate the Friction Stir Spot Welding of the AA6082-T6 aluminium alloy. For these friction models, the temperature evolution, the heat generation, and the plastic deformation were analysed and compared with experimental results. It was realized that numerical analysis of Friction Stir Spot Welding can be effective and reliable as long as the interfacial friction characteristics are properly modelled. This approach may be used to guide the contact modelling strategy for the simulation of the Friction Stir Spot Welding process and its derivatives.

The ventral scales of Dinodon rufozonatum were investigated to understand the outstanding tribological adaptability in various environments. The coefficient of friction (COF) of ventral scales was measured and changed with the contact conditions. It was discovered that the COF of scales under water-lubrication conditions (WLC) was larger than that under dry conditions (DC). More interestingly, the COF increased first and then decreased as the substrate roughness reduced. The abrasion marks on scales were then observed. The results indicated that the scales in DC wore more gently than that in WLC. Moreover, the degree of wear reduced with the decrease of substrate roughness. The frictional performance of ventral scales enabled the snakes to move more efficiently, quickly, and flexibly in multiple environments.

This paper presents the impact of coating topography in piston ring-liner conjunction under mixed regime of lubrication using low viscosity oils. The study provides a time efficient analytical model including mixed-hydrodynamics regime of lubrication under different contact conditions. The method modified the expressions of the contact load and area of Greenwood-Tripp model in order to capture the real asperities interaction into contact. The model represents the tribological behavior of a thin top ring at Top Dead Centre, where boundary and mixed conditions are predominant. Electroplated CrN and PVD TiN coated rings were studied to predict the ring friction. The results are compared with an uncoated steel ring. The CrN coating shows slighter coefficient of friction, due to the coating morphology and roughness parameters. The TiN coating presents thicker lubricant films and higher coefficient of friction because the surface topography is quite rough with high peaks. This can be explained because of the major contribution of the roughness parameter and asperity slope in the boundary friction prediction.

New approaches to improving wear resistance with an affordable and noncomplex technology, such as deep cryogenic treatment, (DCT0), are receiving attention. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of DCT on the friction and wear performance of high-speed steels. AISI M2, AISI M3:2 and AISI M35 were heat-treated under different conditions, and then investigated under dry sliding conditions. Tribological testing involved different contact conditions, prevailing wear mechanisms and loading conditions. The DCT effect on sliding wear resistance depends on HSS steel grade, as well as contact conditions and wear mode, whereas it improves the dynamic impact of the wear and galling resistance.

The detachment between the cam and the follower was investigated for different cam speeds (N) and different internal distance of the follower guide from inside (I.D.). The detachment between the cam and the follower were detected using largest Lyapunov exponent parameter, power density function of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and Poincare’ maps due to the nonlinear dynamics phenomenon of the follower. The follower displacement and the contact force between the cam and the follower were used in the detection of the detachment heights. Multi-degrees of freedom (spring-damper-mass) systems at the very end of the follower were used to improve the dynamic performance and to reduce the detachment between the cam and the follower. Nonlinear response of the follower displacement was calculated at different cam speeds, different coefficient of restitution, different contact conditions, and different internal distance of the follower guide from inside. SolidWorks program was used in the numerical solution while high speed camera at the foreground of the OPTOTRAK 30/20 equipment was used to catch the follower position. The friction and impact were considered between the cam and the follower and between the follower and its guide. The peak of nonlinear response of the follower displacement was reduced to (15%, 32%, 45%, and 62%) after using multiple degrees of freedom systems.

Abstract Friction dampers are one of the most common secondary structures utilized to alleviate excessive vibration amplitudes in turbo-machinery applications. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of the turbine bladed disks coupled with one of the special damper designs, the so-called Mid-Span Dampers (MSDs) that is commonly used in steam turbines of Baker Hughes Company, is thoroughly studied. Friction between the blade and the damper is modeled through a large number of contact nodes by using 2D contact elements with a variable normal load. In the solution procedure, the coupled static/dynamic Harmonic Balance approach is utilized for the first time in the assessment of the dissipation capability of MSDs, computationally shown by predicting the forced response levels of the system at different resonances. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the nonlinear dynamic response is non-unique and it may vary considerably even if all the user-controlled inputs are kept identical. This phenomenon is a novel observation for MSDs and it is explained by an uncertainty present in the contact forces. Contact conditions corresponding to multiple responses are also investigated to unveil the different kinematics of the damper under the same nominal conditions.

We study a new frictionless quasistatic contact problem for viscoelastic materials, in which contact conditions are described by the fractional Clarke generalized gradient of nonconvex and nonsmooth functions and a time-delay system. In addition, our constitutive relation is modeled using the fractional Kelvin–Voigt law with long memory. The existence of mild solutions for new history-dependent fractional differential hemivariational inequalities with a time-delay system are obtained by the Rothe method, properties of the Clarke generalized gradient, and a fixed-point theorem.

Abstract Relying on the high current temperature rise test, starting from three aspects of different materials, different structural strengths, and different contact conditions, the research on the current-carrying-temperature rise characteristics of the joint terminals of ±800kV UHVDC converter stations under different conditions is carried out. The results show that, for joint terminals of the same structure type and contact area, the difference in resistivity of joint terminals of different materials has a significant impact on the temperature rise level. When the material is the same, the temperature rise level can be reduced to a certain extent after the silver (tin) layer is added to the contact surface of the terminal. When the contact resistance of the joint terminal and the current density are the same, after increasing the contact area, the temperature rise and decrease level of the aluminum alloy plate lap type joint terminal is significantly better than other types of joint terminals. The contact resistance and temperature rise of the joint terminal decrease with the increase of the bolt tightening torque, and become stable when it reaches more than 80%. When the bolt tightening torque reaches more than 90%, the surface finish of the contact surface has no obvious effect on the contact resistance of the joint terminal. By controlling the material properties, structural strength, contact conditions, significantly reduces the temperature rise of the level of the joint terminal, effectively ensuring the safety ±800kV UHVDC converter station stable operation.
