This chapter discusses the London Symphony Orchestra’s creation and development of the pioneering orchestra-owned label LSO Live as a response to a classical music industry in crisis. The investigation of the label’s business model is framed within a production of culture perspective that considers six categories: industry structure, organizational structure, occupational careers, law and regulation, technology, and market. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and industry data, this chapter demonstrates how the London Symphony Orchestra increased its artistic and managerial independence and, in doing so, effectively multiplied its local and international reputation. As an example of forward-looking managerial culture and leadership, the LSO Live initiative continues to be imitated around the globe.

The food-related industries important influence on the environment and the factors which caused food-related industriesenvironmental pollution was investigated by using the food-related industry data. The results showed that the variables measuring the quantities and structures of food consumption have an important influence on carbon dioxides discharge. In addition, the scale of economics and environmental control variables have the biggest influence. We can lead peoples food consumption structure to the environmentally friendly structure and strengthen the environmental control, then control the environmental pollution of the food industry effectively.

Background: Industry involvement in neurosurgical research is common, creating financial conflicts of interest (COIs). Most journals require voluntary disclosure of financial COIs. In 2013, the Sunshine Act (SA) was passed in the US, mandating industry disclosure of all payments to physicians. The accuracy of voluntary disclosure can now be determined by comparing voluntary author disclosure with industry data. Methods: We reviewed disclosure statements and calculated rates of voluntary disclosure in major neurosurgical journals before (2011) and after (2013) the Sunshine Act to determine if voluntary disclosure increased after its implementation. We then determined the accuracy of voluntary disclosure in 2013, comparing voluntary disclosure with industry disclosure on the Open Payments Database (OPD). Mean, median and range of industry payments to neurosurgeons were calculated Results: Voluntary disclosure significantly increased in JNS-Spine only (10.7% to 35.4%,p<0.001) after implementation of the SA. The average rate of non-disclosure in all journals studied was 38.3% (Range 33.8%-42.2%)$32,598,522.97 of industry payments were provided to 656 authors in the five-month period studied (Average $49,692.87/author) Conclusions: Voluntary COI disclosure in JNS- Spine increased after implementation of the Sunshine Act. Industry payments to physicians publishing in neurosurgery journals are common and rates of non-disclosure of COIs are high. The ethical implications of COIs and non-disclosure are discussed.

The State of Louisiana is leading an integrated wetland restoration and flood risk reduction program in the Mississippi River Delta. East of New Orleans, Biloxi Marsh, a ~1700 km2 peninsula jutting 60 km north toward the State of Mississippi is one of few Delta wetland tracts well positioned to dissipate hurricane surge and waves threatening the city’s newly rebuilt hurricane flood defenses. Both its location on the eastern margin of the Delta, and its genesis as the geologic core of the shallow water St. Bernard/Terre aux Boeuf sub-delta, which was the primary Mississippi outlet for almost 2000 years, make Biloxi Marsh attractive for restoration, now that the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet deep-draft ship channel has been dammed, and 50 years of impacts from construction and operation have abated. Now, the cascade of ecosystem damage it caused can be reversed or offset by restoration projects that leverage natural recovery and increased access to suspended sediment from the Mississippi River. Biloxi Marsh is (1) geologically stable, (2) benefiting from increased input of river sediment, and (3) could be restored to sustainability earlier and for a longer period than most of the rest of the submerging Mississippi Delta. The focus of this review is on the Biloxi Marsh, but it also provides a template for regional studies, including analysis of 2D and 3D seismic and other energy industry data to explore why existing marshes that look similar on the ground or from the air may respond to restoration measures with different levels of success. Properties of inherent durability and resilience can be exploited in restoration project selection, sequencing and expenditure. Issues encountered and investigative methods applied in the Biloxi Marsh are likely to resonate across initiatives now contemplated to sustain valuable river deltas worldwide.
