AbstractPalmprint recognition and palm vein recognition are two emerging biometrics technologies. In the past two decades, many traditional methods have been proposed for palmprint recognition and palm vein recognition and have achieved impressive results. In recent years, in the field of artificial intelligence, deep learning has gradually become the mainstream recognition technology because of its excellent recognition performance. Some researchers have tried to use convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for palmprint recognition and palm vein recognition. However, the architectures of these CNNs have mostly been developed manually by human experts, which is a time-consuming and error-prone process. In order to overcome some shortcomings of manually designed CNN, neural architecture search (NAS) technology has become an important research direction of deep learning. The significance of NAS is to solve the deep learning model’s parameter adjustment problem, which is a cross-study combining optimization and machine learning. NAS technology represents the future development direction of deep learning. However, up to now, NAS technology has not been well studied for palmprint recognition and palm vein recognition. In this paper, in order to investigate the problem of NAS-based 2D and 3D palmprint recognition and palm vein recognition in-depth, we conduct a performance evaluation of twenty representative NAS methods on five 2D palmprint databases, two palm vein databases, and one 3D palmprint database. Experimental results show that some NAS methods can achieve promising recognition results. Remarkably, among different evaluated NAS methods, ProxylessNAS achieves the best recognition performance.

This paper aims to provide a brief review of the feature extraction methods applied for finger vein recognition. The presented study is designed in a systematic way in order to bring light to the scientific interest for biometric systems based on finger vein biometric features. The analysis spans over a period of 13 years (from 2008 to 2020). The examined feature extraction algorithms are clustered into five categories and are presented in a qualitative manner by focusing mainly on the techniques applied to represent the features of the finger veins that uniquely prove a human’s identity. In addition, the case of non-handcrafted features learned in a deep learning framework is also examined. The conducted literature analysis revealed the increased interest in finger vein biometric systems as well as the high diversity of different feature extraction methods proposed over the past several years. However, last year this interest shifted to the application of Convolutional Neural Networks following the general trend of applying deep learning models in a range of disciplines. Finally, yet importantly, this work highlights the limitations of the existing feature extraction methods and describes the research actions needed to face the identified challenges.

In this study, a method based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was developed to detect soil contaminated with Pb. Different levels of Pb were added to soil samples in which tobacco was planted over a period of two to four weeks. Principal component analysis and deep learning with a deep belief network (DBN) were implemented to classify the LIBS data. The robustness of the method was verified through a comparison with the results of a support vector machine and partial least squares discriminant analysis. A confusion matrix of the different algorithms shows that the DBN achieved satisfactory classification performance on all samples of contaminated soil. In terms of classification, the proposed method performed better on samples contaminated for four weeks than on those contaminated for two weeks. The results show that LIBS can be used with deep learning for the detection of heavy metals in soil.

Objective: This study evaluated the use of a deep-learning approach for automated detection and numbering of deciduous teeth in children as depicted on panoramic radiographs. Methods and materials: An artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm (CranioCatch, Eskisehir-Turkey) using Faster R-CNN Inception v2 (COCO) models were developed to automatically detect and number deciduous teeth as seen on pediatric panoramic radiographs. The algorithm was trained and tested on a total of 421 panoramic images. System performance was assessed using a confusion matrix. Results: The AI system was successful in detecting and numbering the deciduous teeth of children as depicted on panoramic radiographs. The sensitivity and precision rates were high. The estimated sensitivity, precision, and F1 score were 0.9804, 0.9571, and 0.9686, respectively. Conclusion: Deep-learning-based AI models are a promising tool for the automated charting of panoramic dental radiographs from children. In addition to serving as a time-saving measure and an aid to clinicians, AI plays a valuable role in forensic identification.

Biometrics technology is an important security technology and the research of it has become a new hot spot for its superior security features. Then hand vein recognition is a new biological feature recognition which has many advantages, such as safety, non-contact. According to the features of human hand vein image, a hand vein preprocessing method based on wavelet transform and windows maximum between-class difference method threshold (OTSU) segmentation algorithm is proposed. In this paper, the hand vein image is enhanced by adaptive histogram equalization in low frequency part of the hand vein image after wavelet decomposition and filtering before feature extraction. Then the windows OTSU threshold segmentation algorithm is used to get the features. The experimental results show that this method is simple and easy to realize and has laid a good foundation for the latter part of the vein recognition.
