Aims: Banana is the fifth largest agricultural commodity in the world trade after cereals, sugar, coffee and cocoa and second largest fruit crop in the world. The main objective of the study is to know the performance of banana to silicon fertilization grown in typic ustifluvent soil. Study Design: The experiment was conducted in randomized block design. The test crop banana var Grand Naine. Place and Duration of Study: Rajagopalapuram village under Kuttallam taluk, Tamilnadu, India Between July to October 2016 Methodology: The experiment consisted of ten treatments viz., T1-NPK (RDF), T2-NPK+Potassium silicate (FS)- 0.25%,T3-NPK+Potassium silicate (FS)-0.50%,T4-NPK+Potassium silicate (FS)-1.00%,T5-NPK+Potassium silicate (FS)-0.25%,T6 -NPK+ Potassium silicate (FS)-0.50%,T7­-NPK+ Potassium silicate (FS)-1.00%,T8-NPK+Potassium silicate (SA)-50kgha-1,T9-NPK + Potassium silicate (SA)-100 kg ha-1 and T10 -NPK + Potassium silicate (SA)-150 kg ha-1. T2 to T4 foliar spray was done at 3rd and 5th month and from T5 toT7, foliar spray was done at 3rd, 5th and 7th month. Growth, yield parameters and banana yield were recorded. Results: The outcome was that soil application of silicon recorded higher growth and yield compared to foliar application. Pseudo stem height, Pseudo stem girth, LAI, chlorophyll content, sucker production and leaf dry matter weight, fruit characters viz., bunch weight and length, number of hands/ bunches, number of fingers / hands, total number of fingers/ bunches, finger weight, length and girth were highest with soil application of 50 kg Si ha-1. Similarly, foliar application of silicon at 1% applied at 3rd and 5th recorded the highest morphological and fruit characters compared to 0.25 and 0.5% Si. The highest fruit yield ((96.0 t ha-1) was noticed with 50 kg Si ha-1 followed by foliar spray of 1% Si applied at 3rd and 5th month (92.7 t ha-1). Conclusion: It is concluded that soil application of 50 kg Si ha-1 through potassium silicate is best followed by foliar spray of 1.0% Si for realizing higher banana productivity.

Rice is a rich accumulator of silicon and its supply is essential for the growth and economic yield of rice. Hence, a field experiment was conducted in sandy clay loam soil belonging to Padugai series (Typic ustifluvent) at farmers holding in Kuttalam block, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu to assess the role of silicon in improving agronomic characters and yield of rice ADT 43, Oryza sativa. The treatments included  T1 -  Recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF), T2 - RDF + Potassium silicate (FS) - 0.25%, T3- RDF + FS - 0.50%, T4 - RDF +FS - 1.00%, T5­ -RDF + FS - 0.25%, T6 - RDF + FS - 0.50%,  T7­ - RDF + FS - 1.00%,  T8 - RDF + SA - 50 kg ha-1, T9 - RDF + SA - 100 kg ha-1 and T10 - RDF + SA- 150 kg ha-1. From T2 to T4, the foliar spray was done at tillering stage and from T5 to T7, the foliar spray was done at tillering and panicle initiation stage.  The silicon was applied through FS with the rice crop. The soil application of silicon relatively recorded higher growth and yield compared to foliar application. Besides improving different agronomic characters of the rice, the soil application of 50 kg Si ha-1 registered the highest grain yield (6183.3 kg ha-1) and straw yield (6740 kg ha-1) and was comparable with a single foliar spray of 1% Si.  Growth and rice yield increased with Si concentration of 0.25% to 1%.  Thus, the soil application of silicon @50 kg ha-1 through potassium silicate is advocated to realize maximum rice yield.

A field experiment was carried out at the research field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur, during rabi (winter) season of 2016-17 to evaluate the effects of fertilizer treatments on black cumin (BARI Kalozira-1). The field belongs to Shallow red-brown terrace soil of Salna series under AEZ-28 (Madhupur Tract). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Results showed that the application of nutrient elements had positive effect on plant height, branches per plant, capsule setting, umbels per plant, capsules per plant, capsule size, seeds per capsule, 1000-seed weight and seed yield of black cumin. The highest seed yield (1277 kg ha-1) was obtained from 75% RDCF + 25% cowdung-N treatment followed by 100% RDCF (N80P45K50S20Zn5B2 kg ha-1) and the lowest seed yield (420 kg ha-1) was recorded with 50% RDCF. Thus, the IPNS treatment 75% RDCF + 25% cowdung-N appeared to be the best suitable package for black cumin cultivation in this location.Bangladesh J. Agril. Res. 43(2): 205-210, June 2018

Field experiment was conducted in Farmers holding located at Rajagopalapuram village under Kuttalam taluk, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamilnadu, India belonging to Padugai series (Typic ustifluvent) low in available silicon to elucidate the response of banana in terms of yield, nutrition and quality due to silicon nutrition applied through potassium silicate. The treatment consists of  T1 - NPK (RDF), T2 - NPK + Potassium silicate (FS) - 0.25%, T3- NPK + Potassium silicate (FS) - 0.50%, T4 - NPK + Potassium silicate (FS) - 1.00%, T5­ - NPK + Potassium silicate (FS) - 0.25%, T6 - NPK + Potassium silicate (FS) - 0.50%,  T7­ - NPK + Potassium silicate (FS) - 1.00%,  T8 - NPK + Potassium silicate (SA) - 50 kg ha-1, T9 - NPK + Potassium silicate (SA) - 100 kg ha-1 and T10 - NPK + Potassium silicate (SA) – 150 kg ha-1. From T2 to T4 foliar spray was done at 3rd and 5th month and from T5 to T7, foliar spray was done at 3rd, 5th and 7th month.  The test crop is Banana Var. Grand Naine. The results showed that the highest fruit yield was noticed with 50 kg Si ha-1 (96.0 t ha-1) and it reduced with Si levels.  Among foliar treatments, fruit yield increased with silicon concentrations (0.25 to 1%).  The highest fruit yield was observed with 1% Si applied at 3rd and 5th month (92.7 t ha-1). Foliar spray of 0.25 and 0.5% Si applied thrice increased the fruit yield compared to twice application at same concentration. But fruit yield declined when Si was sprayed at 1% thrice. Soil application of silicon recorded higher nutrient uptake over foliar addition. The nutrient uptake was maximum with 150 kg Si ha-1. With respect to foliar treatments, the highest uptake was noticed with foliar spray of 1% Si applied at 3rd and 5th month. Soil application of 50 kg Si ha-1 recorded the highest fruit quality viz., TSS, total sugars, reducing and non-reducing sugar and leaf protein. The highest fruit quality was noticed with foliar spray of 1% Si applied at 3rd and 5th month.

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from November 2013 to March 2014 to examine the effect of nitrogen application methods on the growth and yield of wheat. Two application methods (Foliar spray and soil application) and three varieties viz. Sotabdi, Kanchan and BAW56 were included and experimental test crop. From the study it was found that plant height. Total tillers plant-1,effect tillers plant-1,root dry weight plant-1,grains panicle-1, 100 grain weight, grain weight plant-1, straw weight plant-1, biological yield plant-1, and harvest indexwere significantly higher by foliar spray method than the soil application of nitrogen, Higher grain yield (9.01 g plant-1) was observed by the foliar spray application and lower grain yield was 6.07 g plant-1 obtained from the soil application. Among 3 varieties Sotabdi was found to be better yielding ability and produced comparatively higher plant height, total tillers plant-1, effective tillers plant-1,root dry weight plant-1, grains panicle-1, 100 grains weight, grains weight plan-1, straw weight plant-1, biological yield plant-1, in respect of harvest index values. BAW56 was observed as medium performed variety and Kanchan was the least. Regarding interaction effect of the variety Sotabdi also showed the highest plant-1, total tillers plant-1, effective tillers plant-1, root dry weight plant-1, grains panicle-1,100 grains weight, grains weight plant-1, straw weight plant-1, biological yield plant-1 and harvest index by foliar spray. The results indicated that all the varieties gave higher grain yields under foliar spray application method.Progressive Agriculture 28 (4): 287-294, 2017

An experiment was conducted at the research farm of Crop Physiology and Ecology Department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, Bangladesh, during November 2013 to April 2014 to determine the growth and yield performance of four varieties of black cumin (Exotic variety, BARI kalozira-1, Faridpur local and Natore local) as influenced by three levels of fertilizers (40-20-30 Kg ha-1, 80-30-45 Kg ha-1 and 120-40-60 Kg ha-1 N-P-K, respectively).  The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. First flower bud initiation day, capsule setting, and capsule ripening in 50% plant were not significantly influenced by N-P-K fertilizer levels. The secondary branch plant-1, tertiary branch plant-1,plant height at harvest, capsule length, capsule diameter and 1000 seed weight of black cumin were also not influenced significantly by the fertilizer levels. The dry matter weight  plant-1, primary branch plant-1, fruit plant-1, seed capsule-1 and grain yield of black cumin genotypes were significantly influenced by different levels of N-P-K fertilizers. Natore local gave maximum dry matter  production plant-1  at 55 DAS with moderate  N-P-K levels and at 70 DAS with higher N-P-K fertilizer levels (0.22 and 1.06 g, respectively), whereas Exotic black cumin genotype showed maximum dry matter plant-1  at 85 and 100 DAS with higher N-P-K fertilizer levels  (2.30 and 4.97 g, respectively). Exotic variety produced maximum grain yield (3.43 g plant­­-1 and 2.30 t ha-1)  at higher level of N-P-K fertilizer, but BARI kalozira-1 (2.95 g plant­­-1  and 1.95 t ha-1), Faridpur local (2.80g plant­­-1  and 1.90 t ha-1) and Natore local (2.69 g plant­­-1  and 1.80 t ha-1) showed maximum yields at moderate N-P-K fertilizer levels. Among the test varieties of black cumin, the exotic variety showed better yield performance than the others.The Agriculturists 2015; 13(2) 97-104

Micronutrients, though needed in smaller amounts, play a major role in the production and productivity of rice. Zn is the fourth most deficient nutrient element in Indian soils and its deficiency causes severe yield reduction in rice. Application of Zn either as foliar spray or soil application caused significant improvement in growth and yield attributes and yield of rice. Similar to that of Zn, B nutrition also caused significant improvement in growth and yield attributes and yield of rice. The review elaborates the effect of Zn and B nutrition on the growth, physiological parameters, yield attributes, yield and quality of rice.

A field experiment was carried out during kharif, 2016 on sandy loam soils of dry land farm of S.V. Agricultural College, Tirupati, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. There were eight treatments viz., control (T1), 100% RDF (60:30:30 kg ha-1 N:P2O5:K2O) (T2), 100% N through farm yard manure (FYM) (T3), 100% N through FYM + seedling treatment with biofertilizers (Azospirillum+ PSB) (T4), Seedling treatment with beejamruta + soil application of jeevamruta @ 500 l ha-1 just after transplanting and at every 10 days interval upto 15 days before harvest (T5), Seedling treatment with beejamruta + foliar application of panchagavya @ 3% foliar spray at every 10 days interval up to 15 days before harvest (T6), T3 + T5 (T7) and T3+ T6 (T8). The test variety of finger millet was ‘Vakula’. The growth and yield attributing parameters i.e., plant height, leaf area index, number of tillers m-2 and dry matter production at harvest, number of productive tillers m-2 and ear weight, yield and economics of finger millet crop were found to be significantly influenced by various sources of nutrients. In conclusion, the investigation revealed that higher grain yield of finger millet as well as economic returns could be realized with 100% recommended dose of nutrients through fertilizers. Among the various organic sources of nutrients tried, 100% N through FYM + seedling treatment with beejamruta + soil application of jeevamruta @ 500 l ha-1 just after transplanting and at every 10 days interval up to 15 days before harvest (T7) was proved to be the most promising integrated organic nutrient management practice for higher yield, economics of finger millet along with maintenance of soil biological activity as well as fertility for the sustenance of soil ecology in the present domain of study.
