Comparative analysis of heavy metal and radionuclide contaminants in Black Sea green and red macroalgae

A comparative analysis about the accumulation of heavy metal, natural and technogenic radionuclides from the Black Sea environment in different Bulgarian coastline regions is made. The possibilities to use Chlorophyta and Rhodophyta algae phylums as bioindicators in marine environment are investigated. Environmental contamination in the Black Sea alga species (green and red) was studied from 1992 to 2003. Sampling sites were selected to cover the whole coastal region. Low level gamma spectrometry was used to determine the natural and technogenic nuclide concentrations. The heavy metal concentrations were measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The obtained data show that radionuclide and metal concentrations depend on the macrophyte type. Tendencies in the concentration of pollutant variations during the studied period are examined and all data give information about different macrophytic species' ability to accumulate certain elements from one and the same sampling location. All obtained results show that use of macroalgae in marine environmental monitoring reduces the need for complex studies on chemical speciation of aquatic contaminants and makes algae valuable indicators for seawater quality assessment. All data show the lack of serious pollution along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

The aim of our investigation is a survey of heavy metal pollution in algae, sediments and water from the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and determination of algae species appropriate as bioindicators. The levels of iron, copper, manganese, zinc, lead and cadmium are determined in water, sediments and eight species of macroalgae: (four green: Cladofora laetevirens, Ulva rigida, Enteromorpha intestinalis and Bryopsis plumosa; two brown: Cystoseira crinita and Cystoseira barbata; and two red: Ceramium rubrum and Corallina mediterranium), widely distributed in the Bulgarian coastal zone, and dominant in the Black Sea. The studied area is the littoral coastal zone from four locations - Tuzlata, Ravda, Ahtopol and Sinemoretz. No significant variations between metal concentrations in algae samples are obtained, while for sediments and water there are significant differences between location and season. The Cladofora laetevirens and Ceramium rubrum species show the highest metal content while Cystoseira crinita and Cystoseira barbata show the lowest level. The correlation coefficients and concentration factors of the elements are calculated.

Research into the Iron Age of Anatolia has seldom paid sufficient attention to settlement patterns and the social organization of space. TheAnabasisby Xenophon records the observations of a Greek outsider who travelled across eastern Anatolia and along the Black Sea coast in 400bce, a time that was relatively early in the colonial process in this area. Xenophon's observations are used to establish a basic model for settlement in the Black Sea coastal region of Anatolia, which is then tested against the results of recent archaeological surveys and related research on the Sinop promontory. A fuller and richer model of indigenous Iron Age settlement and colonial engagement on the Sinop promontory is developed and considered in light of recent research on colonization in the western Mediterranean and northern Black Sea regions.

In the Bulgarian part of the Black Sea coast there are seventeen rivers and three lakes which contribute to the pollution and eutrophication of the Black Sea. The hydrophysical and hydrological characteristics of these rivers are described. The variation in the concentration of heavy metals during recent years (data up to 1996) has been determined. The total annual quantity of some pollutants and their percentage distribution are presented. Conclusions are made based on the variation of water quality of the rivers and their impact on the heavy metal pollution of the Black Sea.

Heavy metals which are regarded as serious pollutants of aquatic ecosystems are a major environmental problem in the Black Sea. Contamination by heavy metals has not been extensively studied in the Black Sea coast of Turkey, even though these are subjected to intense discharges of pollutants. It is important, therefore, that sediment by heavy metals be assessed in order to facilitate better management and protection of these valuable coastal ecosystems. This is especially the case, since Turkish Black Sea coast represents a prominent area for fishing, industrial development and urban extension and tourism activities. In view of the economic importance of the Black Sea coastal region of Turkey, this review aims to analyses the distribution and concentrations of heavy metals in bottom sediment in the coastal sediment along the Black Sea.
