Abstract An attempt has been made to assess the water quality status of the lower stretch of river Ganga flowing through West Bengal for drinking using integrated techniques. For this study, 11 parameters at 10 locations from Beharampur to Diamond Harbour over nine years (2011–2019) were considered. The eastern stretch of Ganga showed a variation of WQI from 55 to 416 and SPI from 0.59 to 3.68 in nine years. The result was endorsed through a fair correlation between WQI and SPI (r2 > 0.95). The map interpolated through GIS revealed that the entire river stretch in the year 2011, 2012, and 2019 and location near to ocean during the entire period of nine years were severely polluted (WQI > 100 or SPI > 1). Turbidity and boron concentration mainly contribute to the high scores of indices. Further, the origin of these ions was estimated through multivariate statistical techniques. It was affirmed that the origin of boron is mainly attributed to seawater influx, that of fluoride to anthropogenic sources and other parameters originated through geogenic as well as human activities. Based on the research, few possible water treatment mechanisms are suggested to render the water fit for drinking.

Due to the increasingly serious water quality degradation on river, the study on river water quality status assessment has attracted more and more attention of the researchers and decision-makers. In this paper, water quality assessment of Fujiang River from January 2005 to December 2005 was studied by projection pursuit model (PPM). The water quality status of Fujiang River was assessed by the use of 10 monitoring sections, with DO, CODMn, BOD5, NH3-N, Petroleum, and Volatile phenol indicators. Based on the PPM analysis procedures, the assessed sections are described into 1 “category 1”, 4 “category 2” and 5 “category 3” states in 2005. The relative comparison results show that water quality status spatial order of Fujiang River from bad to good is: Fj09<Fj02< Fj10<Fj07< Fj03<Fj05<Fj04< Fj06<Fj08<Fj01.

The water quality of River Kshipra in stretch of 195 km was studied for water quality status using benthic macro invertebrates for all three seasons’ monsoon, winter and summer. The River water quality is subject to severe domestic and industrial pollution at compete stretch of River. In the present investigation a total of 13 Orders of macrobenthic fauna i.e. Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Placoptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Odonata, Crustacea, Diptera, Pulmonata, Operculata, Pulmonata, Oligochaeta and Hirudinea belong to 3 Phylum’s Arthropoda, Mollusca and Annelida were reported. Arthropoda was the most dominant group in all seasons. On seasonal comparison of benthic fauna is observe that abundance were decreasing order were, Winter > Monsoon > summer. To monitor the water quality samples from two years (2010-12) from different stations were collected monthly. The works highlighted the condition of the River water in various seasons with respect of the seasonal abundance of the benthic macro-invertebrates organisms mentioned above.

The Mananga River today is a source of potable water to meet the demands of a fast growing Cebu metropolis. The physicochemical parameters of Mananga River were studied to assess its water quality status. Six sample collections were done from February to December 2006 in 3 monitoring stations covering the upstream (S1), midstream (S2) and downstream (S3) of Mananga River. Results showed significant spatial variation (p<0.05) in the studied physicochemical parameters except for alkalinity, total phosphates and nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N). Significant temporal variation (p<0.05) was also observed for the factors except for stream width, biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and total suspended solids (TSS). Flow velocity showed significant positive correlation with discharge, pH, DO and NO3-N, and negative correlation with water temperature and TSS. Water temperature correlated negatively with DO and pH, and positively with TSS, with the latter showing a positive correlation with BOD5. The results implied that water currents play a major role in the distribution of dissolved substances and the suspension of sediments. Water quality of the studied segments of Mananga River progressively decreased downstream and was more pronounced during the dry periods. Results also indicated that the river was receiving loads of organic matter from natural and anthropogenic sources.   Keywords - ecology, Mananga River, water quality, flow velocity, Cebu City, Philippines
