The article is devoted to the issue of forming cognitive interest in younger students with intellectual disability. The issue is present not only among children with intellectual disability, but it is with them that it is most difficult to form it, since in primary school age these children still have a predominant play activity, as a result of which children with intellectual disability have distorted conception about the world around them. Intellectually disabled students tend to have a superficial acquaintance with any subject, as a result of which it is quite difficult for them to analyze and synthesize, so their perception and understanding also suffers. The correctional program presented in the article has a mission to eliminate these problems and help children in the formation of correct cognition.

In the doctoral dissertation "Children with intellectual disability in the integrated school-age care system" the extent and goal fulfilment of after-school recreation centre activities in 19 Swedish municipalities were studied. The study gave high marks to these centres for integrating intellectually disabled children into their activities. The empirics of the dissertation revealed, however, a number of warning signals, which indicated an increase in offering “special solutions” to these children. This article will contain a comparison between the study from 1999 and the one carried out in the spring of 2011. The two studies have followed the same question construction in order to achieve a comparison over time. The aim of study, focusing on children received into schools for the intellectually disabled was to evaluate to what extent integrated activities occurred and to look for factors with a positive impact on the quality of those after-school activities which gathered children from these and compulsory schools in the same groups. On the basis of the comparison made between the 12 years that have passed from the earlier to the later study, it must be regretfully concluded that segregated activities have gained a firm hold on the activities of after-school recreation care centres. Key words: after-school activities, inclusion, integrated, intellectual disability, school-age care system.

Jacek Sikorski, Diagnoza postępów w zakresie opanowania podstawowych umiejętności szkolnych uczennicy z umiarkowanym stopniem niepełnosprawności intelektualnej [The assessment of progress in acquiring the basic school skills by the studentwith a moderate intellectual disability]. Interdyscyplinarne Konteksty Pedagogiki Specjalnej, nr 22, Poznań 2018. Pp. 323-338. Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 2300-391X. DOI: https://doi.org/10.14746/ikps.2018.22.18 The following article takes up the issue of assessing intellectual disability from the interdisciplinary, especially psycho-pedagogical, point of view. It pays special attention to the moderate intellectually disabled students and the difficulties which they have in acquiring such basic school skills as reading, writing and counting. However, the main aim of the research was to show all the changes (progress) in the above-mentioned basic school skills in reference to the observed student with a moderate intellectual disability, which have occurred during the 10 months’ time as a result of applying both educational and therapeutic actions and an attempt to indicate the school’s education opportunities based on the results of the researchand teacher’s opinions.

The article focuses on an important problem stipulated by cardinal changes in the theory and practice of training and education of children of primary school age. Its topicality is caused by the implementation of the New Ukrainian School Concept, the essence of which is to change the teaching methods of primary school children bringing them most closely to play activities that is a characteristic feature of mental and physical development of children in primary school age. Purpose. To clarify the importance of interdisciplinary connections and interdisciplinary integration in Ukrainian language lessons in the primary grades of the New Ukrainian School, to outline some aspects of the realization of the essence and importance of this phenomenon. Methods. Analysis of scientific literature on the problem, generalization and systematization of the collected material, modeling of integrated processes. Result. The article focuses on various aspects of the implementation of integrated interdisciplinary links in Ukrainian language lessons, including elements of classes in language and reading, language and mathematics, language and science, language and computer science, lan-guage and art. Due to the fact that the new curriculum for primary school students offers the introduction of such subjects as “I explore the world”, “I am in the world”, “Environment”, “Health Technologies”, “Natural Science” having an integrated nature in themselves, it allows the primary school teacher to expand the interdisciplinary links of disciplines studied by younger students. Originality. The article emphasizes that modern scholars propose to distinguish between the con- cepts of the “integrated learning” and “interdisciplinary links”, which until recently, were interpreted in the literature as similar phenomena. Based on certain theoretical principles of the integrated and interdisciplinary links, different options for their use in native language lessons in primary school have been proposed.Conclusion. Thus, the teacher should analyze the educational material from the proposed subjects, choose topics that are similar in content and purpose, syn-thesize this material and organically combine educational material.

The research conducted on language of children with intellectual disability (ID) shows that they exhibit language dysfunctions on every level of language. Up to now, literature did not include linguistic studies concerning issues of wordbuilding in the language consciousness of pre-school children with intellectual disability. The objective of the article is the assessment of the level of wordbuilding competences of a child at pre-school age with minor intellectual disability (MID) concerning the creation and comprehension of nominal derivates in the area of selected wordbuildin categories (case study). In addition, the author wishes to stress that the assessment of the level of wordbuilding competences should be a component on comprehensive logopaedic diagnosis.

The present study focuses on the perceived stress in 353 parents, whose Children with Intellectual disability underwent training in special education schools of (Bavitha Readiness Centres), Chittoor dist., Andhra Pradesh. The overall perceived stress (scale) score was measured through family assessment scheduled (FAS) developed by NIMHANS. The concerned mean scores were computed and compared at two stages of special training given to children i.e., at the time of joining and after two years of training with a paired t-test of significance. The overall findings reveal that the overall score, as well as its four sub–scales score of parent’s perceived stress, have been reduced after providing 2 years of special training to their Children with Intellectual disability as compared to joining the school (training).

Parents of children with intellectual disability face various stressful situations. However, many of them show resilience even in the midst of challenges and are able to meaningfully contribute to the life of the child. In the present study, the factors of stress that hinder resilience are assessed in a sample of 50 parents of intellectually disabled children. Stress scale for parents of mentally challenged (SPMC) developed by Rejitha, Biji, and Jayan was used to measure the stress of the parents. Resilience was measured using the Bharathiar University resilience scale, developed by Annalakshmi. Results showed extra-familial stress as a significant inverse predictor of resilience. Older parents are relatively more resilient when compared to the younger.

Background: Access to appropriate specialist level services for children with intellectual disability is challenging in Africa, with very few services available. Much literature on the utilisation of services by carers of children with intellectual disability in Africa emphasises the supposed incompatibility between indigenous and western beliefs, failing to identify more obvious, embodied barriers to access to care. Method: As part of a study on children with intellectual disability in Cape Town, South Africa, we interviewed caregivers regarding the difficulties in accessing care, specifically the complex, expensive and time-consuming travelling routes from home to care. Results: Caregivers discussed the embodied difficulties accessing care. Everyday struggles with transport, and crowded, dangerous and hostile environments were identified as barriers to care. Conclusion: These challenges are often overlooked in the literature, in favour of an emphasis on cultural difference. This dualistic view of the world may obscure more obvious reasons why people find it difficult to use services, even when they are available.
