HYDROGEN — ZERO CARBON FOOTPRINT

This article presents Russia’s main achievements of over the past 65 years in the development of an advanced scientific and technical groundwork for the introduction of hydrogen as a fuel in various energy systems. On the basis of the obtained world-class results, the authors argue for the necessity of creating a Center for Hydrogen Innovative Development (CVIR) with the decisive participation of enterprises with real experience in obtaining liquid hydrogen (H2l) with the possibility of its long-term storage. A concept has been formulated for the development of breakthrough technological solutions for the widespread use of hydrogen as an efficient and environmentally friendly (without the formation of carbon oxides) fuel in various power systems within the framework of the CVIR. In particular, the strategic direction of the CVIR project was developed in order to create a developed infrastructure for the reliable provision of vehicles with the required amount of fuel in a limited period of time. This can be achieved by applying the method of cryogenic filling of transport cylinders, taking into account the real properties of hydrogen in the ultra-high pressure region (70 MPa and above). The results have revealed possibilities for further building up the advanced scientific and technical groundwork for the broad promotion of hydrogen in the energy complex of Russia, which is presented in the CVIR project. In addition, the authors have compared the developed technologies with foreign analogues.

The Scottish Government’s commitment for 100% of electricity consumed in Scotland to be from renewable, zero-carbon sources by 2020 continues to drive change in the energy system alongside European and UK targets. The growth of renewables in Scotland is being seen at many scales including industrial, domestic and community generation. In these latter two cases, a transition from the current ‘top down’ energy distribution system to a newer approach is emerging. The work of this paper will look at a ‘bottom up’ view that sees community led distributed energy at its centre. This paper uses the modelling tool HESA to investigate high penetrations of distributed generation in the Angus Region of Scotland. Installations of distributed generation will follow Thousand Flowers transition pathway trajectory, which sees more than 50% of electricity demand being supplied by distributed generation by 2050. From this, insights around the technological and socio-political feasibility, consequences and implications of high penetrations of distributed generation in the UK energy system are presented. Results demonstrate the influence that system change will have on regional and local emission levels under four separate scenarios. It is shown that the penetration of distributed generation requires supplementary installations of reliable and long-term storage alongside utilisation of transmission and transportation infrastructures to maximise the potential of distributed generation and maximise whole system benefits. Importantly, there must be a level of co-ordination and support to realise a shift to a highly distributed energy future to ensure there is a strong economic case with a reliable policy backing.

Cleaning eggs by washing was in the past widely condemned but is now a common practice and required in plants operating under Federal Grading Service. Washing commonly resulted in increased spoilage losses during long term storage. Washing practices that promoted spoilage included using: (a) wash water colder than the eggs, (b) wash water with high bacterial counts, (c) wash water containing appreciable soluble iron, and (d) washing machines with surfaces contaminated by bacteria. Occasionally spoilage losses were substantial during long term storage even though apparently satisfactory washing practices were followed. Treatment with sanitizing chemicals did not destroy bacteria embedded in shells. Long term storage life is of little concern with present day marketing practices since few eggs are stored for extended periods. However, iron in washwater may accelerate spoilage. Washing, besides improving appearance of eggs, was effective in removing surface dirt and bacteria which would otherwise have contaminated egg meats when eggs were broken out.

A model of moisture movement in wood is presented in this paper in a two-dimensional-in-space formulation. The finite-difference technique has been used in order to obtain the solution of the problem. The model was applied to predict the moisture content in sawn boards from pine during long term storage under outdoor climatic conditions. The satisfactory agreement between the numerical solution and experimental data was obtained.

The introduction and active use of information transmission and storage systems in the Ministry of Defense (MoD) of Ukraine form the need to develop ways of guaranteed removal of data from media after their use or long-term storage. Such a task is an essential component of the functioning of any information security system. The article analyzes the problems of guaranteed destruction of information on magnetic media. An overview of approaches to the guaranteed destruction of information on magnetic media of different types is presented, and partial estimates of the effectiveness of their application are given by some generally accepted indicators of performance evaluation. The article also describes the classification of methods of destruction of information depending on the influence on its medium. The results of the analysis revealed the main problems of application of software methods and methods of demagnetization of the information carrier. The issue of guaranteed destruction of information from modern SSD devices, which are actively used in the formation of new systems of information accumulation and processing, became particularly relevant in the article. In today's conditions of development of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, methods of mechanical and thermal destruction are more commonly used today. In the medium term, the vector of the use of information elimination methods will change towards the methods of physical impact by the pulsed magnetic field and the software methods that allow to store the information storage device, but this today requires specialists to develop new ways of protecting information in order to avoid its leakage.
