Purpose of the study. The purpose of this article is to consider the theoretical and practical aspects of designing adaptive training courses aimed at creating an individual educational trajectory, taking into account various mechanisms of adaptation.Materials and methods. This study includes a review of bibliographic sources on the formation of an individual learning path and the implementation of adaptive learning in e-learning courses. It also includes constructing of a structural model of an adaptive learning management system with a description of possible adaptation mechanisms that act as parameters for the formation of a personalized learning path, and a description of an example of the implementation of an adaptive course in the LMS of the Bashkir State Agrarian University.Results. An analysis of factors that influence the choice of a professional educational trajectory is presented. At the same time, different levels of formation of factors are described, for instance, such groups as macrofactors, mesofactors and microfactors are distinguished and characterized. The concept of a flexible adaptive learning model is considered and possible resources (mechanisms) for its adaptation are analyzed. With regard to the management model of the formation of an individual trajectory of training, such parameters as the form of training, the content of training, training methods, the organization of e-learning in the electronic training course, the model of a student, and the trajectory of training are distinguished as adaptation resources. A structural model of an adaptive learning management system is being made, including the following series of structural elements: block of educational content; block of the knowledge control, skills and abilities; communicative block; reflection block; personal identification unit; navigation system; learning path control module. Various approaches to the concept of a learner’s model are also considered (in particular, scalar, overlay and cognitive models). To test the adaptive learning model, an electronic course in the discipline “Informatics and Information Technologies” was designed and implemented in the e-learning management system of the Bashkir State Agrarian University on the LMS Moodle platform. The e-course is used in the educational process for full-time and parttime education, as well as a form of support for distance learning during periods of self-isolation. A comparative analysis of the progress of students who study by using linear and adaptive versions of the e-course is carried out. Students studying with the adaptive version of the e-course showed better learning outcomes. From this, it is concluded that the adaptive course allowed students to better adapt to the conditions of forced distance learning in the new reality.Conclusion. An individual educational trajectory is one of the effective ways of realizing the professional and educational potential of an individual and is based on certain forms, methods, technologies and learning mechanisms. Modern e-learning technologies provide vast opportunities for implementing the concept of personalized flexible learning, in particular, using adaptive training courses. In this case, both the parameters of the learning management environment and the characteristics of the students can act as a resource (parameter) of adaptation.

For students, teachers, and administrators, e-learning is a relatively new and sometimes uncertain event. With popular technologies and instructional trends coming and going, distance learning practice and policies change constantly. Regardless of one’s preference for an online learning management system, he or she may be forced to drop it in favor of an inferior and untested courseware shell that was developed internally and adopted solely because it was free. Adding to the confusion, technology tradeshows and teaching and learning conferences continue to alter their themes to fit the current online terminology, which, in turn, changes and evolves. Despite the anxiety caused by the many uncertainties and the accelerating pace of change, teaching online is fast becoming an expected part of one’s scholarly endeavors or, at the very least, a legitimate practice of one’s colleagues and home institution.

E-learning through a learning management system (LMS) is expected to be a solution to the needs of distance learning, especially during a pandemic situation. However, learning through an LMS can lead to a lack of focus, reduced classroom efficiency, and a feeling of boredom for the user. One solution to this problem is to use gamification (e.g., rankings or points, badges, and leaderboards) to enhance active learning. This study uses a mixed-methods approach and data from weekly reviews and forum discussions, questionnaires, and data students’ interviews to assess the implementation of gamification elements in an LMS. The data from the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the data from student interviews were analyzed using general inductive analysis. The results show that gamification in an LMS had a positive influence on active learning. The students have also provided positive feedback on the rated weekly review activity. The badges and leaderboard were also positively accepted by most students. Awarding points for activities was also found to improve students’ performance in class. Badges were found to increase students’ active participation, and the leaderboard motivated students to participate actively in online classes. This study could provide guidance to universities or LMS providers wishing to implement gamification in an LMS.

PurposeThis paper aims to derive criteria for a strategic selection of learning management system (LMS) after making an analysis of the feedback data collected from learners and academic counselors in open and distance learning (ODL) to evaluate their perceptions. This analysis hints at the need to implement a learning management system (LMS) in ODL. Selecting an appropriate LMS can prove to be a strategic approach for ODL in achieving self-reliance and competitiveness.Design/methodology/approachResearch design includes qualitative design intended to discuss the features, advantages and attributes of different popular LMSs and compare them. In addition, the quantitative design (a questionnaire-based online feedback) to analyze the perceptions of the learners and academic counselors in order to know their e-learning needs has also been used. Results have been exhibited in tabular/graphical formats for easy comprehension and enhanced understanding.FindingsFindings of the study suggest that availability of plethora of LMSs in the market, which also include open source (OS) LMSs, makes the decision- making as regards selection of an appropriate LMS strategically crucial requiring adequate consideration of every aspect such as cost, quality, usage, capacity, budget and most importantly priorities and objectives.Research limitations/implicationsThis study will help educational administrators and decision-makers in ODL for building a quality civilized life and empowered society by removing the constraints related to financial problems, disabilities, time, geographical conditions and many others in bringing education to the doorstep of every willing learner. The technical details of LMS, however, were intentionally kept simplified to achieve the objective and provide easy comprehensibility for the reader with little technical background, which might be a limitation of this study.Originality/valueThis study highlights that ODL has tasted success with optimum exploitation of different technological advancements in its transformational expedition from conventional learning to innovative e-learning and to the newest adaptive e-learning system. The huge potential of LMS, in providing learners and educators in ODL with an effective web-based learning system incorporating almost all the academic activities, has attracted organizations for using it not only for imparting education to learners but also for providing appropriate trainings to their human resources.

Abstract Traditional Learning Management Systems are installed on a single server where learning materials and user data are kept. To increase its performance, the Learning Management System can be installed on multiple servers; learning materials and user data could be distributed across these servers obtaining a Distributed Learning Management System. In this paper is proposed the prototype of a recommendation system based on association rules for Distributed Learning Management System. Information from LMS databases is analyzed using distributed data mining algorithms in order to extract the association rules. Then the extracted rules are used as inference rules to provide personalized recommendations. The quality of provided recommendations is improved because the rules used to make the inferences are more accurate, since these rules aggregate knowledge from all e-Learning systems included in Distributed Learning Management System.
