Developing and sustaining a competitive advantage from the use of information technology is a topic of concern for information systems research. Mata et al. (1995) present a model that is founded on the resource-based view of the firm. The model is used to discuss factors that lead to competitive advantage in e-commerce companies. This paper explores factors that enable sustainable competitive advantages in B2C retailing. The analysis is based on a single in-depth case study of an Internet pioneer company (LeShop), which was observed by the authors since its inception more than 10 years ago. The research data stems from a series of interviews with managers at LeShop as well as two case studies about the company from two different points in time (2000 and 2009). LeShop is an online pioneer, which began selling groceries on the Internet in Switzerland in April 1998. After a turbulent few years, LeShop is now one of the few successful e-commerce suppliers in the supermarket segment worldwide. The discussion includes an analysis of further critical resources of the company from a resource-based view.

This article examines the embedding of the phenomenon of Born Globals into three existing theories of the firm. The model of Born Globals deals with young companies that begin shortly after their foundation to internationalize. The Uppsala Internationalization Model helps to delimit the concept of Born Globals from existing internationalization models and to highlight their special features. The resource-based view takes up the integration of knowledge as the key resource of Born Globals and explains the underlying mechanism with which a company achieves a sustainable competitive advantage from a bundle of resources. The knowledge-based view is concerned with the generation of knowledge and explains the learning processes that are performed by the entrepreneur. A recurring theme could be identified and contains the following elements which interconnect the three theories of the firm with the concept of Born Globals - knowledge as a key resource, learning, and integration of knowledge into organizations.

In the current era of competition, the use of computers and allied technologies has become inevitable and it has been well recognized that Information Systems (IS) plays different roles in different industries. This paper makes an attempt to explore empirically the difference in the role of IS in the banking industry, i.e., between public sector, private sector, and foreign sector banks operating in India. The study indicates that IS plays a supportive role in public sector banks and a strategic role in private and foreign sector banks. The study also indicates that the future impact of IS does not vary significantly with the banking groups.
