This article presents the computer simulation and field test measurement results on Channel 29 for the preliminary performance evaluation and verification of the newly-installed Lesotho digital terrestrial television network based on DVB-T2 standard following the guidelines and techniques specified by the ITU-R BT.2035-2. It evaluates, at predetermined outdoor locations for fixed and mobile reception, parameters such as received signal strength, signal quality, bit-error rate (BER) and threshold-of-visibility (ToV) together with TV signal decoding (observation of screen artefacts) for quasi error-free reception. The results indicate that at over 97% of the test sites/points at the university town of Roma, the main Berea Plateau transmitter from the capital city (Maseru) broadcasts digital television service with enough signal level and quality to be properly decoded. The measured signal strength threshold ranges above -50 dBm for good reception, -64 dBm to -50 dBm for acceptable reception and -69 dBm to -64 dBm for poor reception. With the noise floor at about -73 dBm, the minimum required C/N of around 23 dB for good reception and about 4 dB for ToV have been recorded. The relative values of minimum required respective signal strength and signal quality for ToV obtained from the set-top box are 33% and 18% for stationary reception, while they give 37% and 20% for mobile reception.

This paper presents a new hardware reconfiguration approach named hardware reconfiguration through digital television (HARD), which can update FPGA hardware modules based on digital TV (DTV) signals. Such a scheme allows several synthesized hardware cores (bitstreams) signaled and broadcast through open DTV signals via data streaming to be identified, acquired, decoded, and then used for system updates. Reconfiguration data are partitioned, encapsulated into private sections, and then sent in a carrousel fashion in order to be recovered by modified receivers. Service information content, specially designed for identifying and describing the characteristics of multiplexed hardware bitstreams, was added to the transmitted signal and provided all necessary information in the traditional DTV style. The receiver framework, in turn, checked whether those characteristics corresponded to its embedded reconfigurable devices and, if a match was found, it reassembled the related bitstreams and reconfigured the respective internal circuits. Experiments performed with an implementation of the proposed methodology confirmed its feasibility and showed that remounting and reconfiguration times were satisfactory and presented no blocking aspect. Finally, HARD can be used in several designs regarding intelligent reconfigurable devices, minimize device costs in the long term, and provide better hardware reuse.

This article analyzes all fiction series and miniseries produced and broadcasted in Spain on linear and digital television channels as well as video-on-demand platforms in the period 2000–2020. The aim is to collect, quantify, classify, and characterize Spanish-produced television series. A methodology with a mixed, quantitative–qualitative design is proposed to quantify, classify, and categorize the 545 identified fictional works. The resulting database includes fields for the year of first broadcast, format, genre, platform, channel, number of episodes and seasons, duration, and rating. This taxonomy is the first to present a complete characterization of all fictional series produced and broadcasted in Spain during the digital era. Based on the results, three periods can be distinguished: the development of the series, the economic crisis of 2008, and the arrival of video-on-demand platforms in Spain. It is concluded that comedies have been overwhelmed by other major genres, such as dramas or police series. Television series are adapting to the new society that consumes them, portraying its social debates, fears, and aspirations through new themes while also reducing their length, mixing some genres with others, and with an increasing presence and prominence of female characters to the detriment of men.

Local content modification provided to subscribers of the terrestrial digital television signal is necessary to provide the technical possibility of organizing inserts of local content signals, such as TV programs of regional broadcasters, as well as information on emergency situations. Broadcast multiplexes of federal TV programs are designed for use within the corresponding time zone (A, B, C, D, M). In each time zone, there are a number of regions, in each of which there are local TV and radio companies that produce local content that must be delivered to the subscribers of the whole subject. The task of embedding/modifying content at each remote transmitting station is performed by an inserter or local content insertion device (ETSI TS 102773). The reliability parameters of the restorable system for organizing terrestrial television broadcasting at a remote station with the content modification were calculated in this article. Tables and a graph of the broadcasting system states are presented, on the basis of which, systems of Kolmogorov differential equations are compiled. It was found that additional redundancy organized by connecting the output stream from the RX1 receiver directly to the transmitting device allows for a 2.5-fold increase in the average operating time between failures, as well as an increase in the availability factor by 5.26 percent. All calculations were performed using the SimInTech software package. The influence of automatic redundancy of the local content inserter and the transmitter on the occurrence of errors in the stream that affect the quality of the output signal is considered. The relationship between the availability factor and the components of the quality of service parameter – SAE, SDE and SIE is determined.

This commentary describes an approach for delivering television content to mobile phones in Canada using over-the-air broadcast signals. Over-the-air television broadcasting to mobile phones is available to our American neighbours but has not been implemented in Canada. We report on a test of mobile TV services, demonstrating access to U.S. signals from Canada. While it is technically feasible to deliver over-the-air mobile broadcasting in Canada, it is likely that vertical integration in the broadcasting and communications sectors is creating barriers to the development of this service. The commentary concludes with some thoughts on how mobile digital television services could be developed for Canadian viewers.

The use of multiple carriers in Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (OFDM) makes it bandwidth-efficient and suitable for modern communication such as Long-Term Evolution (LTE), Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) internet access, optical fiber communication, digital television, audio broadcasting, etc. In this paper, four modulation formats by using Coherent Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulations (CO-OFDM) have been analyzed. These are Single Port Dual Polarization (SP DP) 16 QAM, Single-Port Single Polarization (SP SP) 16 QAM, Dual Port Single Polarization (DP SP) QPSK 16-QAM, and Single Port Dual Polarization (SP DP) QPSK. Operation characteristics such as Bit Error Rate (BER) versus fiber-length and BER versus bit-rate have been examined. The range of fiber length used for this investigation is from 0 Km to 1000 Km with loop count equal to 2 and the range of bit rate of operation is from 20 Gbps to 200 Gbps. The present investigation helps in determining the relative suitability of CO-OFDM formats at various bit-rates of operation for different fiber lengths.

Passive radar (PR) systems use the existing transmitters of opportunity in the environment to perform tasks such as detection, tracking, and imaging. The classical cross-correlation based methods to obtain the range-Doppler map have the problems of high sidelobe and limited resolution due to the influence of signal bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a novel range-Doppler processing method based on compressed sensing (CS), which performs sparse reconstruction in range and Doppler dimensions to achieve high resolution and reduces sidelobe without excessive computational burden. Results from numerical simulations and experimental measurements recorded with the Chinese standard digital television terrestrial broadcasting (DTTB) based PR show that the proposed method successfully handles the range-Doppler map formatting problem for PR and outperforms the existing CS-based PR processing methods.
