The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of explicit affective strategy instruction on the speaking performance of Freshmen English majors at Faculty of Education, Suez University, Egypt. The design of the study is a pre-post quasi experimental one. The instrument is a pre/post speaking performance test (designed by the researcher). Participants were eighty Freshmen English majors, randomly divided into two groups: a control group (N=40) and an experimental one (N=40). During the experiment, the experimental group was explicitly taught some affective strategies (lowering anxiety, encouraging yourself and monitoring emotions) while the control group was taught using the traditional method. All participants were tested using the pre/post speaking performance test before and after the intervention. The difference between the post test’s mean scores of the control and experimental groups were calculated using Independent Samples t-test and the difference in the mean scores between the pre- and post tests of speaking performance was calculated for each group separately using Paired Samples t-test. A significant difference was found between the post test’s mean scores of the control and the experimental groups in favor of the experimental group. Moreover, a significant difference was found between the mean scores of the pre and post test of the experimental group in favor of the post test. It was concluded that participants’ level of speaking performance significantly improved after receiving the explicit affective strategy instruction.

Most teachers may face challenges to teach the students without students’ native language to teach a foreign language. The students may get bored easily and not motivated because they have to listen to more new strange words in every meeting that they do not directly understand the words means. Thus, it needs some strategies to get the better result. Students who like doing things happily need a more relaxing learning situation to join the English classes comfortably. The study aimed to investigate the correlation of verbal, gestural, token reinforcement, speaking performance, and self-confidence. The research method used was a quantitative study with multiple linear regressions. Students of the fifth grade of SD N 1 Wates Undaan Kudus as the population took part in the positive reinforcement, self-confidence, and speaking performance test in teaching English. The data were analyzed through a statistical program of SPSS 22. Thus, there was a correlation between positive reinforcement, speaking performance, and self-confidence. The conclusion is that all positive reinforcement correlates with speaking performance and self-confidence. It means that the positive reinforcement influenced their speaking performance and their self-confidence. It is suggested that the teacher should raise their awareness to motivate students’ speaking skills for better achievement. Besides, teachers’ performance in the classroom activity deals with classroom management, encourages the students to always joyful in learning English materials, provides exercise and group discussion according to their circumstance, and performs various teaching that involves the learner’s role in the classroom activity.

AbstractA test method has been developed to measure the release of radionuclides from the waste package under simulated NNWSI repository conditions, and to provide information concerning materials interactions that may occur in the repository. Data from 13 weeks of unsaturated testing are discussed and compared to that from a 13 week analog test. The data indicate that the waste form test is capable of producing consistent, reproducible results that will be useful in evaluating the role of the waste package in the long-term performance of the repository.

The role of English in Indonesia can be said quite special because English is the only compulsory foreign language included in secondary curriculums. However, the special status of English in national education is not accompanied by satisfactory results. Out-classroom experience (OCE) is believed to overcome this issue and has been applied successfully. Therefore, this study investigates the use of out-classroom experience in enhancing Indonesian EFL learners’ ability in speaking English. By conducting a case study approach, the research used triangulation data collection techniques consisting of classroom observation, interview, and speaking performance test. The study involved 40 undergraduate students from one of the public universities in Banten province as its subjects. The result showed that the use of OCE positively contributes to the development of students’ speaking development. Out-classroom activities can facilitate the learners to access or even create language exposures by themselves. This study provided some implications about using OCE for language teachers and educational practitioners. Keywords: Out-Classroom experiences, speaking, college students, EFL context

Four measurement models for use in performance evaluation (norm, criterion, domain, and objectives-referenced measurement) are presented and the contingent relationships among them are discussed. An argument is made for the use of criterion-referenced measurement in performance testing. Literature on two major problem areas in criterion-referenced measurement, reliability and validity, is briefly reviewed; and a recent example of criterion-referenced performance test development in an applied training context is described.

This research is conducted in the teaching and learning process toward the college students during 6 meetings. The teaching and learning itself uses a reading text as one of media to enhance the learner’s speaking ability. In this case, the problems which exist in the reading text must be overcome by college students altogether. Here, the lecturer implements PBL as one of the strategy. The purposes of this research are to find out (1) how effective is the implementation of PBL on learning reading text for enhancing learner’s speaking ability, and (2) how is the learner’s activity and the result of speaking performance test during the implementation of PBL on learning reading text for enhancing learner’s speaking ability. The data were gained from observation from two observers and test given to college students in each meetings. All data were analyzed by using descriptive quantitative study. From the result of observation and test which were already obtained and calculated by researcher, it shows that the effectiveness of PBL is in high level, that is 3,96. It can be said that the learning process is effective to be implemented and for students’ activity during the implementation of PBL is also categorized high, that 3,86. Meanwhile, the result of college student’s learning achievement can also be categorized high, all students get satisfying and excellent score.
