Operational measurements of the O2 concentration in the combustion chamber of a pulverized coal boiler are not yet common practice. Operators are generally satisfied with measuring the O2 concentration in the second pass of the boiler, usually behind the economizer, where a flue gas sample is extracted for analysis in a classical analyzer. A disadvantage of this approach is that there is a very weak relation between the measured value and the condition in specific locations in the fireplace, e.g. the function of the individual burners and the combustion process as a whole. A new extractionline was developed for measuring the O2 concentration in the combustion chamber. A planar lambda probe is used in this approach. The extraction line is designed to get outputs that can be used directly for diagnosis or management of the combustion in the boiler.

O2/CO2combustion technology is an effective method to capture and store coal-fired boiler flue gas CO2. With a 300MW subcritical pulverized coal boiler as the research subject investigated, Fluent numerical simulation software is used to simulate the process of pulverized coal combustion both in air and O2/CO2conditions. The comparative analyses are made both in the former conditions, such as the combustion characteristics of pulverized coal, the influence of oxygen volume fraction, the effect of the secondary air temperature on the temperature field in the furnace of pulverized coal boiler. As for the following results of the pulverized coal combusted in the O2/CO2condition, compared with the results in the air condition, its time of ignition is delayed, and the combustion temperature is low and the central position of flame rises. With the increasing percentage of the oxygen volume and the rising temperature of secondary air, the time of ignition speeds up, which improves the overall furnace temperature level and transferring capability of the radiation heat.

Tangentially fired pulverized-coal boiler dilengkapi fasilitas tilting burner, dimana fasilitas ini memungkinkan burner untuk dapat diarahkan ke atas maupun ke bawah membentuk sudut tertentu terhadap garis horizontal. Sudut tilting burner berfungsi untuk mengontrol posisi vertikal pembakaran dan juga ukuran nyala api untuk menghasilkan distribusi temperatur yang seragam ke semua tube boiler. Sudut kemiringan yang tidak akurat dapat menyebabkan penyebaran panas tidak merata dan temperatur lokal yang tinggi pada salah satu sisi tube. Dalam penelitian ini, model numerik dikembangkan dan divalidasi dengan data eksperimental yang diperoleh dari pengukuran di tempat untuk menyelidiki efek sudut tilting burner terhadap pembakaran. Turbulensi, perpindahan panas dan reaksi kimia dalam ruang bakar direproduksi secara rinci oleh model. Pada penelitian ini, variasi sudut tilting yang dilakukan adalah +20o, +10o, 0o, -10o, dan -20o terhadap garis horizontal. Perubahan ini dibandingkan dengan sudut tilting 0o. Perubahan sudut tilting +10o akan menaikkan temperatur furnace 90oC serta temperatur flue gas pada outlet furnace 40oC.. Perubahan sudut tilting +20o, akan menaikkan temperatur furnace 170oC serta temperatur flue gas pada oulet furnace 90oC. Perubahan sudut tilting -10o akan menurunkan temperatur pada furnace 130oC, dan temperatur flue gas pada outlet furnace 20oC. Sementara perubahan sudut tilting -20o, akan menurunkan temperatur pada furnace 190oC, dan temperatur flue gas pada outlet furnace 90oC. Sudut tilting yang paling sedikit area yang terkena overheating yaitu sudut tilting 0o.
