Introduction: We conducted a preliminary bird survey in the Abobo-Etetak hill (Yaounde, Cameroon). Methods: To carry out this survey, we used the mist-netting method and we captured birds over a period of six months. To study the distribution of this avifauna in their life environment, we performed several analyses to obtain various diversity indexes such as implemented in softwares SAS/STAT and PAST. Results: Three hundred and eleven individuals were captured belonging to 21 passerine and non-passerine families distributed into 39 genera and 51 species. We recorded new species for the area: Anthus brachyurus, Cinnyris reichenowi, Euplectes gierowii, Hirundo fuligula, Nicator vireo, Pogoniulus atroflavus and Pogoniulus subsulphureus, and Terpsiphone rufocinerea. Species documented were from the families Lybiidae, Motacillidae, Nectariniidae, Hirundinidae, Nicatoridae, Ploceidae and Monarchidae. Species from two new genera were recorded, Cinnyris (Sunbirds) and Terpsiphone (Monarchs). Estimated diversity index values show that the Abobo-Etetak hill exhibits high avifaunistic diversity. Conclusion: Our results found an absence of the supremacy of one species (H’=3.34) and the value of the Equitability index (J’=0.85) suggests an equal distribution of the individuals across species. With the obtained value of the index of Simpson diversity of 0.95, our result suggests high diversity within the Abobo-Etetak avifauna, which could be explained by luxuriant vegetation that is present all year round. Human activities have had an impact on the diversity of this avifauna with the presence of some genera sampled (Ploceus, Passer, Estrilda, Pycnonotus and Spermophaga) but the relic Centre Region of Cameroon which preserves its originality offers on the whole favourable conditions to birds.

Ophiopsiformes are ganoin-scaled Halecomorphi from the Mesozoic. In the Upper Jurassic, there is a high diversity of at least eight described genera (Altmuehlfuro new, Brachyichthys, Cerinichthys, Elongofuro new, Ophiopsiella, Ophiopsis, Schernfeldfuro, Zandtfuro) plus additional fish species historically assigned to "Furo", which have not yet been revised. Recent examinations showed that fish called "Furo" are not monophyletic. Here I provide a complete morphological de- scription of two new genera and new species (Altmuehlfuro boomerang, Elongofuro woelflei) from the Upper Jurassic Plattenkalk deposits of the Solnhofen Archipelago and of Nusplingen (both southern Germany), respectively, together with a comparison of some morphological features of Ophiopsiformes. The new species are characterized by a combination of morphological characters: differences in body proportions, relative position of the fins, the morphology of several skull bones, squamation pattern, position of lateral line in the caudal area and some meristic characters (e. g., number of fin rays, and number of maxillary teeth). This is a further step to enlighten the broader patterns of basal halecomorph evolution.

The gastropod family Mitridae in the Miocene Paratethys Sea is revised. In total, 35 species in eight genera are reported. 75% of the species are so far known only from the Paratethys Sea. Biogeographic relations with the adjacent Proto-Mediterranean Sea are moderate and are mainly documented within Cancilla, but nearly absent in the other genera. A slight South-North trend in diversity is observed within the Paratethyan basins, with an outstandingly high diversity of 22 species in the Romanian Făget Basin, but only nine species in the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Fore-Carpathian Basin.                Fraudiziba nov. gen. and Wormsina nov. gen. are introduced as new genera. Twelve species are described as new: Episcomitra antibellardii nov. sp., Episcomitra leopoldiana nov. sp., Episcomitra pseudoincognita nov. sp., Episcomitra missile nov. sp., Episcomitra neubaueri nov. sp., Domiporta amoena nov. sp., Domiporta pulchra nov. sp., Domiporta turpis nov. sp., Nebularia soliphila nov. sp., Cancilla nanostriatula nov. sp., and Cancilla wagreichi nov. sp. Fraudiziba ottomanica nov. sp. is described as new species from the middle Miocene of the Karaman Basin in Turkey.                Lectotypes are designated for M. austriaca Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1950, Mitra brusinai Hoernes & Auinger, 1880, M. cochlearella Mayer-Eymar, 1890, M. friedbergi Cossmann, 1912, Mitra hoernesi Mayer, 1864, Mitra perangulata Peyrot, 1928, M. praenigra Mayer-Eymar, 1890, and Mitra transsylvanica Hoernes & Auinger, 1880. Fraudiziba paratethyca nov. nom. is proposed as new name for Mitra austriaca Csepreghy-Meznerics 1950 [non Mayer-Eymar, 1898].

Resuming published and own data, a revision of classification of Chaetognatha is presented. The family Sagittidae Claus & Grobben, 1905 is given a rank of subclass, Sagittiones, characterised, in particular, by the presence of two pairs of sac-like gelatinous structures or two pairs of fins. Besides the order Aphragmophora Tokioka, 1965, it contains the new order Biphragmosagittiformes ord. nov., which is a unique group of Chaetognatha with an unusual combination of morphological characters: the transverse muscles present in both the trunk and the tail sections of the body; the seminal vesicles simple, without internal complex compartments; the presence of two pairs of lateral fins. The only family assigned to the new order, Biphragmosagittidae fam. nov., contains two genera. Diagnoses of the two new genera, Biphragmosagitta gen. nov. (type species B. tarasovi sp. nov. and B. angusticephala sp. nov.) and Biphragmofastigata gen. nov. (type species B. fastigata sp. nov.), detailed descriptions and pictures of the three new species are presented.

We provide a synthesis of all mammal taxa described from the African mainland, Madagascar and all surrounding islands in the 20 years since 1988, thereby supplementing the earlier works of G.M. Allen (1939) and W.F.H. Ansell (1989), and bringing the list of African mammals described over the last 250 years current to December 2008. We list 175 new extant taxa, including five new genera, one new subgenus, 138 new species and 31 new subspecies, including remarks, where relevant, on the current systematic position of each taxon. Names of seven species of primates are emended, according to the requirements of the ICZN. The taxonomic group in which the largest number of new taxa has been described is the Primates, with two new genera, 47 new species and 11 new subspecies, while geographically the biggest increase in new species descriptions has been on the island of Madagascar, accounting for roughly half (67) of all new species described in the past 20 years. Nearly half of all new species listed currently are assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (49 of 101 listed species) suggesting further research is urgently needed to help clarify the status of those recently described species.

AbstractA survey of driftwood and mangrove wood in South Australia revealed a high diversity of marine fungi. Across eight sites there were 43 species of marine fungi, of which 42 are new records for South Australia, 11 new records for Australia and 12 taxa currently of uncertain status likely to be new species. Sites had distinctive species compositions with the largest difference attributable to substrate type (beach driftwood vs. mangrove wood). However, even between mangrove sites, species assemblages were distinctly different with only the more common species occurring at all mangrove sites. More intensive surveys across a broader range of habitats and geographic locations should reveal significantly more species.

This paper is a contribution to the current knowledge of taxonomy, ecology and distribution of South American Cortinarius (Pers.) Gray. Cortinarius is among the most widely distributed and species-rich basidiomycete genera occurring with South American Nothofagaceae and species are found in many distinct habitats, including shrublands and forests. Due to their ectomycorrhizal role, Cortinarius species are critical for nutrient cycling in forests, especially at higher latitudes. Some species have also been reported as edible fungi with high nutritional quality. Our aim is to unravel the taxonomy of selected Cortinarius belonging to phlegmacioid and myxotelamonioid species based on morphological and molecular data. After widely sampling Cortinarius specimens in Patagonian Nothofagaceae forests and comparing them to reference collections (including holotypes), we propose five new species of Cortinarius in this work. Phylogenetic analyses of concatenated rDNA ITS-LSU and RPB1 sequences failed to place these new species into known Cortinarius sections or lineages. These findings highlight our knowledge gaps regarding the fungal diversity of South American Nothofagaceae forests. Due to the high diversity of endemic Patagonian taxa, it is clear that the South American Cortinarius diversity needs to be discovered and described in order to understand the evolutionary history of Cortinarius on a global scale.

Abstract. Two new genera and eight new species of benthic foraminifera are described from the shallow water, tropical lagoon of Madang, Papua New Guinea. The new hauerinid genus Pseudolachlanella is characterized by juvenile cryptoquinqueloculine, adult almost massiline arranged chambers, and a slitlike, curved aperture with parallel sides and a long, slender, curved miliolid tooth. Pitella haigi n. gen., n. sp. is a new foraminifera with cryptoquinqueloculine arranged chambers, an almost entirely pitted shell surface (pseudopores) and a rounded aperture with a short simple tooth. Among the other species described as new are four hauerinids and two agglutinated foraminifera All new species described here occur sporadically in the shallow water back- and forereef environments of the lagoon (0–55m), and live infaunally and epifaunally in well-oxygenated, fine and coarse grained biogenic sediments. They are absent in muddy, organic-rich, low-oxygen sedimentary environments within bay inlets where variations of salinity are considerable.

AbstractFreshwater Dothideomycetes are a highly diverse group of fungi, which are mostly saprobic in freshwater habitats worldwide. They are important decomposers of submerged woody debris and leaves in water. In this paper, we outline the genera of freshwater Dothideomycetes with notes and keys to species. Based on multigene analyses and morphology, we introduce nine new genera, viz. Aquimassariosphaeria, Aquatospora, Aquihelicascus, Fusiformiseptata, Neohelicascus, Neojahnula, Pseudojahnula, Purpureofaciens, Submersispora; 33 new species, viz. Dendryphiella phitsanulokensis and Tubeufia roseohelicospora are synonymized with D. vinosa and T. tectonae, respectively. Six orders, 43 families and 145 genera which belong to freshwater Dothideomycetes are reviewed. Of these, 46 genera occur exclusively in freshwater habitats. A world map illustrates the distribution of freshwater Dothideomycetes.
