Oviductal prolapse associated with a leiomyoma in a Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni)

A twelve-year-old, female Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni) was presented with an oviductal prolapse after showing tenesmus for three days prior to presentation. Radiography revealed a soft tissue opacity in the caudal coelomic cavity that ultrasonographically presented as a congested, invaginated tubular structure and was deemed to comprise the left oviduct. After repositioning the oviductal prolapse, coelioscopy confirmed that the invaginated structure consisted of the anterior part of the left oviduct and incorporated a part of the ipsilateral mesovarium and mesosalpinx. A transplastron osteotomy was carried out to perform unilateral salpingectomy and bilateral ovariectomy. A definitive diagnosis of an oviductal leiomyoma was made based on histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of the invaginated part of the oviduct. In the present case, the authors highlight that neoplastic disorders should be considered as a cause of oviductal invagination and prolapse in chelonians. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of the diagnosis and successful treatment of an oviductal leiomyoma in a Hermann’s tortoise.

Stafne bone defects (SBDs) are asymptomatic mandibular lingual bone depressions mainly caused by soft tissue inclusions. The most common form of SBDs is posterior; the anterior variant of SBD is relatively uncommon. Although posterior SBD is easily diagnosed by the unique location on radiography, anterior SBD is sometimes misdiagnosed and confused with other pathological entities owing to the location. We report herein a case of simultaneous unilateral anterior and posterior SBDs. In the present case, definitive diagnosis for the anterior mandibular cavity was unclear, as in reported cases. Surgical exploration was thus performed for the lesion in the anterior mandibular cavity. Pathologic examination of the removed tissue showed salivary gland with chronic inflammation. Postoperatively, no functional disturbance has been observed. Management of the posterior SBD was conservative, with radiographic follow-up. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first report of simultaneous unilateral anterior and posterior SBDs.

An 11-year-old female spayed Maltese presented comatose, half an hour after vehicular trauma, and was treated for traumatic brain injury and pulmonary contusions. The dog developed severe hypernatremia within six hours of presentation, which responded poorly to the administration of five percent dextrose in water. As central diabetes insipidus was suspected, desmopressin was trialled and resolution of hypernatremia was achieved six days later. Transient trauma-induced central diabetes insipidus has been described previously in two dogs; in the first, serum sodium concentrations were evaluated three days after injury and the other developed hypernatremia seven days after injury. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of rapid onset, transient, and trauma-induced central diabetes insipidus in a dog that encompasses the complete clinical progression of the syndrome from shortly after injury through to resolution.

This report describes a 14-year-old Pit Bull dog presenting with a soft tissue swelling of 3-month progression in the right sublingual region. Histopathological analysis of the surgically resected specimen revealed large numbers of mature adipocytes and islets consisting of mucin-containing atrophic acini and dilated ducts surrounded by a thin fibrous capsule. Findings were consistent with sialolipoma of the sublingual salivary gland. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case of sialolipoma affecting the sublingual salivary gland in dogs.

Key Points This is the first report of successful treatment of therapy-resistant leptomeningeal T-PLL with intrathecal alemtuzumab. Intrathecal alemtuzumab is a potentially safe and efficacious therapeutic alternative for treatment of leptomeningeal T-PLL.

The scapulohumeral joint is a common site of forelimb lameness in the dog. Establishing a definitive diagnosis may be difficult because of the limitations of orthopedic examination and radiographs and the inherent elusiveness of the associated conditions. The intent of this review is to present, in a single reference, the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of reported causes of lameness intrinsically associated with the shoulder. Part One of this series discusses conditions associated with cartilage and bone maturation disorders and joint instability, while Part Two reviews tendon diseases, muscle disorders, synovial diseases, and soft-tissue mineralization disorders.

Twenty-seven pedal soft tissue and bone infections in 26 patients were treated with surgical necrectomy of infected tissues and implantation of antibiotic-loaded polymethyl methacrylate bone cement beads on chains. The definitive diagnosis of the infected tissues was obtained by culture and histologic examination in all of the cases. A wide variety of foot infections was successfully treated in this manner. The success rate without recurrence of osteomyelitis or soft tissue infection was 95% in this study at an average of 16 months after surgery.
