AbstractThe adsorption of CO molecules onto ytterbium nanofilms with their thickness varying from 1 to 16 monolayers is studied. The dependences of the number of adsorbed CO molecules (adsorption isotherms) and the work function of ytterbium films on the dose of carbon monoxide are examined. It is demonstrated that both the number of adsorbed molecules and the work function depend (under equal conditions) on the nanofilm thickness; in other words, a size effect is revealed. It is found that this size effect is induced by the electrostatic interaction between the conduction electrons of ytterbium and the electrons localized on the nanofilm surface, which establish bonding between the surface and CO molecules. This interaction depends on the film thickness and limits the number of CO molecules that may be adsorbed onto the surface of a film with a given thickness.

Adsorption isotherms of three adsorbates on the solid beads obtained from colloidal silica were determined by means of gas chromatography at low surface coverages, when lateral interactions between the adsorbed molecules are negligible. The influence of thermal pretreatment on the adsorption properties of the solids was investigated in the temperature range from 343 to 423 K, while the solids were heated between 523 K and 1 223 K. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption have been determined and used to discuss the adsorbate-adsorbent interactions.

X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to study the adsorption of carbon monoxide on Pd dispersed on oxidized Si(111) surface. A fraction of the deposited Pd diffusing at room temperature to the SiO2/Si interface increases with decreasing SiO2 thickness. For oxide layers thinner than ≈1 nm, almost all deposited Pd diffuses to SiO2/Si interface forming there Si silicide. Consequently, the amount of adsorbed CO is dependent on the thickness of the thermally grown SiO2 layer. Two different chemical states of adsorbed carbon atoms, the population of which depends on the amount of the Pd deposited, are observed in the C (1s) spectra of adsorbed CO. Adsorption activity of Pd clusters does not depend on whether n- or p-type Si is used. Comparison of the experimental Pd/CO concentration ratios with those calculated assuming several different modes of the Pd growth on SiO2/Si points to the pseudo-Stranski-Krastanow mode (flat clusters with incomplete condensation of the first layer) at 300 K. Changes in charge balance across the Pd/SiO2/Si interface caused by CO adsorption are discussed in terms of the surface photovoltage effect and work function variation.

We have fabricated (110) epitaxy YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ (YBCO), PrBa 2 Cu 0.8 Al 0.2 O 7 (PBCAO), PrBa 2 Cu 0.8 Ga 0.2 O 7-δ (PBCGO) nanometer-thin films and YBCO/PBCAO, YBCO/PBCGO multilayers of a variety of film thicknesses. Electrical resistivities measured from these systems were plotted against temperatures and film thicknesses and are presented in this paper. Superconducting onset temperature Tc of the YBCO films was estimated and plotted against YBCO film thickness. Superconducting coupling length was deduced. Finite size effect and 2D to 3D transition are also discussed.
