AbstractBackground: Given the limited available time of in-service professionals, the balance between the perceived importance of the course content and training needs is essential for the acceptance and attractiveness of training courses aimed at them. Objectives: The goal of the paper is to contribute to the development of entrepreneurship and business training programs for European SME managers. Methods/Approach: In six European countries a survey focusing on SME managers’ views on the importance of individual items from a list of potential course content items, and their training needs was carried out, and followed by an analysis using exploratory and multivariate techniques. It was aimed at identifying homogeneous groups of managers with common training needs and perceptions of content importance. Results: Homogeneous groups of managers who assign the same importance to certain competences and who have common training needs are identified. Conclusions: Results of our research could help training institutions to develop courses aimed at SME managers. The balancing approach proved to be an interesting method of combining conflicting requirements for the training course curriculum development.

A review of surveys, analyses, and experimental studies was conducted to determine driver education and training needs, driver licensing requirements, and actual driving performance of individuals with vision and hearing deficits. While research seems to indicate that vision deficiencies have an adverse effect on safe driving performance, a number of severely visually impaired individuals have been shown to drive safely with the aid of telescopic lens spectacles. Research results to date are not adequate to establish the auditory requirements for safe driving performance, but there is little evidence to suggest that hearing-impaired individuals, with the possible exceptions of totally deaf males and older deaf drivers, do not drive as safely as the general population. A great deal of further research is needed in the area, particularly in the establishment of requirements for driver education and training programs for both vision and hearing limited individuals.

Introduction: Crises in the operating room (OR) are uncommon events that require an expeditious response from all providers to minimize morbidity and mortality to both patients and staff. Evacuation during a surgical procedure presents a unique challenge. There is a paucity of data on the ideal response, ideal times, and training needs for hospital staff. Methods: The authors herein describe a full-scale simulation exercise of the emergent mid-procedure evacuation of seven ORs.Results: Median time to evacuate from the OR and reach the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit safety point was 3:50 minutes (range, 1:22 minutes to 6:00 minutes). Multiple lessons were learned from direct observation, post-drill debrief, and post-drill survey of participants. Conclusions: Emergent mid-procedure evacuation of ORs can be expeditious if needed. Critical themes in leadership, communication, and coordination of care were discovered. Surgeons, anesthesiologists, and OR staff should consider performing an OR evacuation drill to improve their local efficacy and efficiency in emergent OR evacuation.
