Photovoltaic Thermal Solar Collector (PVT) is a hybrid technology used to produce electricity and heat simultaneously. Current enhancements in PVT are to increase the electrical and thermal efficiencies. Many PVT factors such as type of absorber, thermal conductivity, type of PV module and operating conditions are important parameters that can control the PVT performance. In this paper, an analytical model, using energy balance equations, is studied for PVT with an improved parallel flow absorber. The performance is calculated for a typical sunny weather in Malaysia. It was found that the maximum electrical and thermal efficiencies are 12.9 % and 62.6 %, respectively. The maximum outlet water temperature is 59 oC.

This paper proposes a methodological design based on the development, creation, adaptation and implementation of some analysis tools and the deployment of the risk management process content in standard ISO 31000. This allows for the design of a monitoring and quality control system of critical variables associated with equipment and operating conditions for the purpose of identifying and mitigating sources diversions product specifications. It also seeks to harmonize work philosophies with international management standards. The validation was performed by an industrial company from the city of Barranquilla. The content of this paper provides professionals and industry with a way to address and improve the capacity of any type of manufacturing process in any organization through standardized steps.

An innovative low power (5W) consumer grade dual face PV solar panel assembly is presented in this research. The authors propose capitalizing indirectly on the shadowed face of a typical solar panel by augmenting the panel’s total active area of exposure (via the panel’s “back side” and respective “deflectors”) and aiming at an increase in the overall efficiency of the assembly. Standard environmental operating conditions were taken into account. No CPV were used. The resulting power output profile of this unit is presented in detail and compared with the output of a single sided “standard” solar PV module configuration. In addition, under similar design and operating environmental variables, the behavior of crystalline cells panels is intended to be contrasted with thin film panels’ as variants of this proposed solution.

Stand-alone/grid connected renewable energy systems (RESs) require direct current (DC)/DC converters with continuous-input continuous-output current capabilities as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) converters. The continuous-input current feature minimizes the extracted power ripples while the continuous-output current offers non-pulsating power to the storage batteries/DC-link. CUK, D1 and D2 DC/DC converters are highly competitive candidates for this task especially because they share similar low-component count and functionality. Although these converters are of high resemblance, their performance assessment has not been previously compared. In this paper, a detailed comparison between the previously mentioned converters is carried out as several aspects should be addressed, mainly the converter tracking efficiency, conversion efficiency, inductor loss, system modelling, transient and steady-state performance. First, average model and dynamic analysis of the three converters are derived. Then, D1 and D2 small signal analysis in voltage-fed-mode is originated and compared to that of CUK in order to address the nature of converters’ response to small system changes. Finally, the effect of converters’ inductance variation on their performance is studied using rigorous simulation and experimental implementation under varying operating conditions. The assessment finally revels that D1 converter achieves the best overall efficiency with minimal inductor value.

Photovoltaic (PV) technology provides a direct method to convert solar energy into electricity. In recent years, the use of PV systems has increased greatly with many applications of PV devices in systems as small as battery chargers to large scale electricity generation systems and satellite power systems. An important factor that influences the reliability of photovoltaic modules is their ability to withstand high thermal stresses which develop in PV modules due to the different coefficients of thermal expansion of the different module materials. PV modules also experience thermal cycles which can lead to failure of the module. In the present work, three dimensional numerical thermal and structural models of a PV module were developed and sequentially coupled together to calculate the temperature distribution in the PV module and the thermal stresses developing in it. The model is also capable of simulating PV module cooling. Using the model, a study was conducted to evaluate the thermal and structural performance of the module with and without cooling and the variation in thermal stress magnitudes with changing environmental conditions (solar radiation and ambient temperature) and operating conditions (heat exchanger inlet temperature and velocity).

Real-time performance assessment and condition monitoring are potential new features in mobile working machines that have to run in a wide range of operating conditions. Condition monitoring and performance assessment are needed to be able to proactively correct impending faults before severe failures or machine stoppage occur. This paper presents a data-driven approach for machine performance assessment and condition monitoring based on indices representing the performance of a subsystem. Instead of adding new sensors, the indices are computed using existing data from the machine control system. Metrics for machine performance follow-up are derived from these multidimensional data, which have strong nonlinear correlations in certain measurement variables. Although the indices describe primarily the technical performance of the machine, they have proven to be valuable also in terms of condition monitoring of various machine functions. The indices summarize in a concise and easily comprehensible manner changes in performance.

Achieving situation recognition in ubiquitous sensor networks (USNs) is an important issue that has been poorly addressed by both the research and practitioner communities. This paper describes some steps taken to address this issue by effecting USN middleware intelligence using an emerging situation awareness (ESA) technology. We propose a situation recognition framework where temporal probabilistic reasoning is used to derive and emerge situation awareness in ubiquitous sensor networks. Using data collected from an outdoor environment monitoring in the city of Cape Town, we illustrate the use of the ESA technology in terms of sensor system operating conditions and environmental situation recognition.
