Energy and security are very important issues in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which need to be handled. These issues are interrelated because of limited energy there are some restrictions on implementation of security. Insider packet drop attack is one of the dangerous attacks for wireless sensor network that causes a heavy damage to WSN functionalities by dropping packets. It becomes necessary to identify such attack for secure routing of data in WSN. To detect this attack, trust mechanism has been proven as a successful technique. In this mechanism, each node verifies the trustworthiness of its neighbor node before packet transmission so that packets can only be transmitted to trustworthy nodes. But there is a problem of False Alarm with such trust-aware scheme. False alarm occurs when a good node’s trust value goes down due to natural packet dropping and being eliminated from the routing paths. This wastes network’s resources that further shortens network lifetime. In this paper, we have proposed a system for identification and recovery of false alarms (IRFA) which is the optimization of existing trust based system. But security solution needs to be energy efficient due to scarcity of energy resources in WSN. To provide energy efficiency, we have implemented proposed IRFA system in cluster based environment which detects insider packet drop attackers in an energy efficient manner. We have conducted OMNET++ simulation and results demonstrate that the proposed system performance is better than existing trust-based system in terms of packet delivery rate and energy efficiency which improves network lifetime.

The lifetime of a node in wireless sensor networks (WSN) is directly responsible for the longevity of the wireless network. The routing of packets is the most energy-consuming activity for a sensor node. Thus, finding an energy-efficient routing strategy for transmission of packets becomes of utmost importance. The opportunistic routing (OR) protocol is one of the new routing protocol that promises reliability and energy efficiency during transmission of packets in wireless sensor networks (WSN). In this paper, we propose an intelligent opportunistic routing protocol (IOP) using a machine learning technique, to select a relay node from the list of potential forwarder nodes to achieve energy efficiency and reliability in the network. The proposed approach might have applications including e-healthcare services. As the proposed method might achieve reliability in the network because it can connect several healthcare network devices in a better way and good healthcare services might be offered. In addition to this, the proposed method saves energy, therefore, it helps the remote patient to connect with healthcare services for a longer duration with the integration of IoT services.

Existing duty-cycling and pipelined-forwarding (DCPF) protocols applied in battery-powered wireless sensor networks can significantly alleviate the sleep latency issue and save the energy of networks. However, when a DCPF protocol applies to a linear sensor network (LSN), it lacks the ability to handle the bottleneck issue called the energy-hole problem, which is mainly manifested due to the excessive energy consumption of nodes near the sink node. Without overcoming this issue, the lifespan of the network could be greatly reduced. To that end, this paper proposes a method of deploying redundant nodes in LSN, and a corresponding enhanced DCPF protocol called redundancy-based DCPF (RDCPF) to support the new topology of LSN. In RDCPF, the distribution of energy consumption of the whole network becomes much more even. RDCPF also brings improvements to the network in terms of network survival time, packet delivery latency, and energy efficiency, which have been shown through the extensive simulations in comparison with existing DCPF protocols.

In this paper, a simple and novel routing algorithm is presented to improve the packet delivery in harsh conditions such as selective forwarding and blackhole attacks to the wireless sensor networks. The proposed algorithm is based on restricted multi-path broadcast based on a virtual cylinder from the source node to the sink node. In this algorithm, when a packet is broadcast by a source node, a virtual cylinder with radius w is created from the source node to a sink node. All the nodes located in this virtual cylinder are allowed to forwardthe packet to the sink. Thus, data is forwarded to sink via multiple paths, but in a restricted manner so that the nodes do not consume a high amount of energy. If there are some compromised nodes in this virtual cylinder, the packets may be forwarded to the sink via other nodes of the virtual cylinder. The proposed algorithm is simulated and evaluated in terms of packet delivery rate and energy consumption. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm increases packet delivery rate 7 times compared to the single-path routing method and reduces energy consumption up to three times compared to flooding routing method.
