However, it has been constantly neglected, resulting in oral health collapse. Thc aim of this work is discuss some concepts and classify elderly abuse and neglect, list hypothesis of risk factors, review the legislation and identify the difficulties of caregivers. Furthermore, this study wants to stress the necessity of dentist's attention and responsibility of this issue. Dentists must be aware on this reality due to the high prevalence of oral health problems and needs in this group, emphasizing their social responsibility. Introduction: The Brazilian population has been aging rapidly since the early 1960s, when the age structure of the population began to change. In 1996, only 5% of the population was 60 years old or more, while today they are 9% of the population. Objective: The objective of this study is to assess oral health conditions of the elderly who live in Vila dos Idosos, collecting information about their condition of life, and trying to correlate how much oral health can compromise the quality of life and autonomy of these elderly people. Methods: Data collection was carried out through questionnaires and clinical examination; elderly people over 60 years old, of both sexes, were interviewed. All interviews were conducted in the Vila dos Idosos itself. Results: The results show that tooth loss or the use of inadequate prostheses has negative impacts on quality of life, especially with regard to worry, stress resulting from problems in the mouth and shame. It was obtained in the research that, in general, oral health in the elderly is fragile, requiring greater attention from health professionals; however, when self-perceived oral health is analyzed, the vast majority assess it as very good or good. Conclusion: The most important finding of the study was that, although the data obtained indicate a fragile oral health that reveals a commitment to quality of life, the vast majority of the elderly evaluated their own health positively. This may indicate that, for this population, health oral health is dissociated from health.

Abstract Background This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of negative impacts of oral health conditions on the quality of life of quilombola and non-quilombola rural adolescents and identify associated factors. Methods This cross-sectional study was carried out in a rural area in the countryside of Bahia, Brazil, in 2015. Participants were asked to complete the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance Questionnaire. Prevalence and prevalence ratios (PR) were estimated together with their respective 95% confidence intervals. Multiple analysis was conducted using Poisson regression with robust error variance and hierarchical entry of variables. Results Of the 390 rural adolescents who took part in the study, 42.8% were quilombolas, and 45.6% of all participants reported a negative impact of their oral health conditions on their quality of life. The most prevalent impact was difficulty eating (32.6%). After adjusted analysis, the following factors were found to be associated with the negative impact of oral health conditions on quality of life: age (PR = 1.04), feeling lonely (PR = 1.42), worst evaluation of oral health (PR = 1.52), need of dental care (PR = 1.33), and occurrence of toothache in the last 6 months (PR = 1.83). Quilombolas and non-quilombolas presented with a different prevalence of discomfort when brushing their teeth and had different factors associated with the negative impact of oral health conditions on their quality of life. Both quilombola and non-quilombola rural adolescents showed a high prevalence of negative impact of oral health conditions on their quality of life. Conclusions These results support the need for improved oral healthcare for specific populations like the quilombolas. Furthermore, the results illustrate the importance of incorporating oral healthcare strategies that take into consideration the sociocultural context of adolescents.

This work aims at critical reflection on the actions that determine a good level of oral health. Health promotion is a process that can positively affect the quality of life of a population. Dental problems have a low priority compared to diseases considered to be of social relevance. Prevention of oral diseases must be developed at three levels: primary, secondary and tertiary. Self-diagnosis is extremely important, because the sooner the problem is detected and prevention services are activated, the greater the chances of an effective treatment. Among oral health problems, dental caries is considered a damage that deserves higher priority due to its high prevalence. Oral cancer gained the second degree of priority, due to its severity, followed by periodontal diseases. Education in oral health has been increasingly required, taking into account the low cost and the possibilities of dental impact on public health. Therefore, the role of educating should not be the exclusive responsibility of the professional conventionally called teacher, but of any citizen.

This study assessed the extent to which clinically measured oral health conditions, adjusted for sociodemographic and oral health behavior determinants, impact adversely on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in a sample of Belgian young adults. The null hypothesis was that, among young adults, the oral health conditions would have no impact on their quality of life. The participants were 611 new patients aged 16-32 years seeking consultation at the Saint-Luc University Hospital in Brussels in 2010-2011. The patients (56.0% female) were examined for their oral health conditions and answered a validated questionnaire about sociodemographic and oral health behavior determinants in addition to questions about their OHRQoL. The abridged Oral Health Impact Profile-14 was used to assess the OHRQoL. Interexaminer reliability for caries was 0.86 (95% CI 0.84-0.89, nonweighted κ). The outcome was a high score on the OHRQoL (median split). Hierarchical logistic regression analysis showed that young adults with clinical absolute D1MFS scores between 9 and 16 (OR = 2.14, p = 0.031) and between 17 and 24 (OR = 3.10, p = 0.003) were significantly more likely to report a high impact on their quality of life than those with lower scores. Also, periodontal conditions compromised significantly (OR = 1.79, p = 0.011) the quality of life of young adults. In conclusion, this study identified oral health conditions with a significant adverse effect on the OHRQoL of young adults. However, the prevalence of young adults reporting impacts on at least 1 performance affected fairly often or very often was limited to 18.7% of the sample.
