Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man, 1879) is a freshwater prawn species that have a high economic value because of its relatively large size compared to the other freshwater prawn species. Exploration to find this species in the Maraja River, Toli-Toli, Central Sulawesi was carried out in January 2019. Sample collected using tray net. Two male specimens of M. rosenbergii were found in the river, with maximum size of carapace length reaching 45.94 mm. Macrobrachium rosenbergii has been found in habitats with clay substrate and slow flowing current. This record extended the distribution of M. rosenbergii, whose spread in Sulawesi has been known only in the southern part of the island, such as in Makassar, Bone, Pinrang, Wajo and Luwu. In this paper, the morphological characters and line drawing of some character M. rosenbergii from the Maraja River were provided.

Giant freshwater prawn is a native Indonesian freshwater prawn, which has the largest body size among other freshwater prawn. Efforts to increase the production of giant prawns can be done by genetic improvement of the parent. The main basis for conventional genetic improvement of giant freshwater prawns is availability of morphological variation information. This study is to determine the morphological variations of the giant prawn broodstock of Siratu, GIMacro, Mahakam, and Bengawan Solo populations which are cultured in Unit Kerja Budidaya Air Payau Balai Budidaya Udang Galah (UKBAP BBUG) Samas. Through this research it is expected to determine the broodstock with a profitable character that is able to produce hybrids with profitable characters as well. Baseline morphometrics were observed from the ratio of cephalothorax: abdomen length, ratio of carapace: rostrum length and ratio of carapace: abdomen length. Morphological variations were observed using 58 characters which included morphometric, meristic and morphological characters. The results showed the largest ratio of cephalothorax and abdomen average length owned by Bengawan Solo population, while the largest ratio of carapace and abdominal average length owned by Mahakam. The highest morphological variation is owned by Mahakam with 52% similarity. The lowest morphological variation is owned by GIMacro and Siratu populations with 80% similarity. The giant prawn broodstock which is expected to produce hybrid with profitable character is the broodstock from Bengawan Solo population. Keywords: Giant freshwater prawn, Morphological variation, SiratuGIMacro, Mahakam, Begawan Solo ABSTRAKUdang galah merupakan udang air tawar asli Indonesia, yang memiliki ukuran tubuh terbesar di antara udang air tawar lainnya.

There are obstacles in the aquaculture business that is still often facedbyfarmers, one of the challengesisthe high price of commercial feed. Feed as an energy source for growth is a reasonably high-cost component in production that reaches 40-89 %. In the control of food for efficiency, it could be done by the fasting method. This research was aimedtoanalyze the effect of periodic fastedofgiant prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man, 1879) against growth and feed efficiency. This research was conducted at IBAP Installation, Probolinggo District - East Java Province. The experimental method used completely randomized design with five treatments and three replications, such as; P0: feeding without fasting (as control), P1: a-day fasted, a-day feeding, P2: a-day fasted, two-days feeding, P3: a-day fasted, three-day feeding, P4: a-day fasted, four-days feeding, P5: a-day fasted, five-day feeding. The results showed that periodic fasted of M. rosenbergii no significant effect on the daily growth rate, absolute weight growth, and feed efficiency. However, by looking at the rate of growth, thisfasting methodcouldbe used as an alternative to saving feed. The P5 showed the most effective in increasing daily growth rate, absolute weight growth, and effectiveness of giant prawn feeding. The strategy of periodic fasted to increase the production of giant prawns should consider the other supporting factors such as ideal water quality (pH, temperature, and DO), proper stocking density, and feeding periods on schedule.

Species specific identification of early larval stages of many decapod crustaceans sampled from plankton collections remains cumbersome owing to lack of distinguishable characteristics, where DNA based molecular methods provide accurate results without taxonomic ambiguities. In the present study, an attempt was made to detect temporal occurrence of early zoea of freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) using real-time PCR assays in polyhaline, mesohaline and oligohaline areas of a tropical positive estuary, the Vembanad lake (S. India). High caridean larval abundance could be recorded in polyhaline areas in all seasons while it could be recorded in monsoon season in mesohaline and oligohaline areas. 113 DNA isolations were successfully made from morphologically identified taxonomic units (MOTU) and SYBR Green based RT-PCR amplifications using designed primer for M. rosenbergii yielded positive detections in 38 samples (34%) representing all seasons in all three zones. Positive detections could be recorded in all months except May in mesohaline areas and differed significantly (F = 17.2 p < 0.01) with the same in polyhaline and oligohaline areas. The present results of molecular detection of M. rosenbergii larvae extend confirmation of its breeding ground in Vembanad lake where appropriate management strategies could be enforced for stock conservation of this species.
