In Indonesia, marriage still serves the only legal institution of family formation. However, at least since 1950s, the pattern of mate selection to expectedly end up in marriage has undergone a silent transformation from the traditional arranged to self-choice. Following the transition, two major cultural trends termed: pacaran and ta’aruf rise as popular ways of young Indonesian Muslims finding their life partner. This study would examine how the changing pattern of mate selection took place in Indonesia and how, under an influence of Giddens’ modernization theory, increasing cultural trends of mate selection were elaborated. Ethnographic evidence provided by previous research was presented. Current trends of mate selection were discussed. The analysis incorporated dimensions of family relations and gender differences to see how much those two aspects influenced the process of spouse choice in Indonesia. The study found that the two most-contested ideals of spouse choice in Indonesia were adopted from ‘traditions’ already existing in other part of the world. However, in the modern Indonesian context, to fully understand how these two emerge and currently contested cannot by simply mentioning a process of globalization without taking into account a complex social and political policy happening particularly during the last century.

To do so, it departs from the horizon of the world of life, so that the text is an attempt at intentionality of consciousness. The pedagogical and historical ethos of Brazilian society is the foundation of this essay, in which the subject is categorized as a woman and, from Adorno’s critical theory, presents an alert to the role of education. In addition, the text is a reflection on the epistemological and discursive bases of the treatment of the question of gender and its reflexes for a humanizing education of the Other. Keywords: Gender. This book is a sequel to Contemporary grandparenting, published in 2012 (Arber and Timonen, 2012). Both macro and micro level issues are covered, with a particular focus on gender, welfare states, economic development, and grandparental agency; this ensures that the book covers many topic areas of greatest relevance and interest. It emphasises that grandparenting takes many diverse forms and cannot be reduced to a small number of ‘types’. Grandparenting has evolved considerably, and continues to evolve, as a result of both socio-demographic and economic influences, and grandparents’ own agency. The book contains analyses of topics that have so far received relatively little attention, such as transnational grandparenting and gender differences in grandparenting practices. It is the only collection that brings together theory-driven research on grandparenting from a wide variety of cultural and welfare state contexts - including chapters on Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and Australia - drawing broad lines of debate as well as outlining country-level analyses. The book therefore combines up-to-date empirical findings with new theorising that will be relevant to academics, researchers, students, and experts working in the realms of family and old-age policy and practice.

Summary: Hare's Psychopathy Checklist - Revised (PCL-R; Hare, 1991 ) was originally constructed for use among males in correctional and forensic settings. In this study, the PCL-R protocols of 36 matched pairs of female and male violent offenders were examined with respect to gender differences. The results indicated a few significant differences. By means of discriminant analysis, male Ss were distinguished from their female counterparts through their relatively higher scores on “callous/lack of empathy” (item 8) and “juvenile delinquency” (item 18), whereas the female Ss scored relatively higher on “promiscuous sexual behavior” (item 11). Some sources of bias and possible implications are discussed.

Abstract. The Thematic Apperception Test is one of the most frequently administered apperceptive techniques. Formal scoring systems are helpful in evaluating story responses. TAT stories, made by 20 males and 20 females in the situation of legal divorce proceedings, were coded for detection and comparison of their personal problem solving ability. The evaluating instrument utilized was the Personal Problem Solving System-Revised (PPSS-R) as developed by G. F. Ronan. The results indicate that in relation to card 1, men more often than women saw the cause of the problem as removable. With card 6GF, women were more motivated to resolve the given problem than were men, women had a higher personal control and their stories contained more optimism compared to men’s stories. In relation to card 6BM women, more often than men, used emotions generated from the problem to orient themselves within the problem. With card 13MF, the men’s level of stress was less compared to that of the women, and men were more able to plan within the context of problem-solving. Significant differences in the examined groups were found in those cards which depicted significant gender and parental potentials. The TAT can be used to help identify personality characteristics and gender differences.
