In Indonesia, marriage still serves the only legal institution of family formation. However, at least since 1950s, the pattern of mate selection to expectedly end up in marriage has undergone a silent transformation from the traditional arranged to self-choice. Following the transition, two major cultural trends termed: pacaran and ta’aruf rise as popular ways of young Indonesian Muslims finding their life partner. This study would examine how the changing pattern of mate selection took place in Indonesia and how, under an influence of Giddens’ modernization theory, increasing cultural trends of mate selection were elaborated. Ethnographic evidence provided by previous research was presented. Current trends of mate selection were discussed. The analysis incorporated dimensions of family relations and gender differences to see how much those two aspects influenced the process of spouse choice in Indonesia. The study found that the two most-contested ideals of spouse choice in Indonesia were adopted from ‘traditions’ already existing in other part of the world. However, in the modern Indonesian context, to fully understand how these two emerge and currently contested cannot by simply mentioning a process of globalization without taking into account a complex social and political policy happening particularly during the last century.

The position of pitāmaha or ancestor in the Babad tradition has an important role. One of them is the position of Sheikh Wali Lanang in Babad Gĕdhongan (hereinafter abbreviated as BG). The guardian of the prophet's teachings is narrated later by the king of Java. This research seeks to understand the position of Sheikh Wali Lanang as the pitāmaha of Java’s king in BG, a Javanese manuscript not yet widely known by the public generally. By presenting the historiography of Babad as a reconstructive historical source, and revealing the BG text philologically, it can be argued that the position of Sheikh Wali Lanang is a symbolic political movement by Paku Buwana III and Paku Buwana VII. The creation and transformation of BG are one of the kingdom's efforts to build a spiritual and spiritual culture after the fading of economic and political legitimacy resulting from the turmoil that occurred before. These two Surakarta kings indirectly also want to present themselves as the descendants of the Prophet, through Sheikh Wali Lanang who is the 21st descendant of the Prophet.

This article attempts to explain the process of Islamic consolidation in Kazakhstan, a young Muslim-majority state in Central Asia which became independent following the demise of the Soviet Union. Unlike its turbulent regional neighbors, Kazakhstan has virtually been not troubled by the threat of extremists, making its success an interesting case to discuss. There are some aspects which this essay is going to analyze. First, using the consolidation framework, I am going to examine how the rise of Islam is facilitated after the demise of the Soviet Union. Second, I also add another element namely securitization. This paper argues that securitisation is the additional strategy which creates a stable condition of Islamic consolidation in Kazakhstan. This paper concludes with giving some reflections on the future of Islam and the political stability in Kazakhstan.
