The aim of this study was to investigate the biological and chemical activity on two species of fungi of the genus Penicillium isolated from wastewater. On the selected species of fungi the different antioxidant activity assays were carried out: DPPH free-radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity, Fe2+- chelating ability and Fe3+- reducing power. Total phenol content was also determinate for ethanolic extract of mycelia. Penicillium chrysogenum ethanolic extract contained higher total phenolic content and better total antioxidant capacity as well as ferrous ion chelating ability. Penicillium fumiculosum ethanolic extract showed higher DPPH free-radical scavenging activity, as well as reducing power. Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that two types of fungi are potential new sources of natural antioxidants.

In this study, total polyphenols content (TPC) and ascorbic acid content (AAC) in CAW were quantified. Total antioxidant activity, reducing capacity, and free radical scavenging activity of CAW were assayed. The TPC and AAC were 160 mg GAE /100ml and 132 mg/100 ml,respectivity. CAW exhibited effective antioxidant activities in the employed in vitro experiments, including total antioxidant activity, reducing capacity, and free radical scavenging activity, which indicates that phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid may play a key role in the antioxidant function of CAW.

Recently, a substantial body of literature provides strong evidence to support the potentials of Crataeva magna (CM), plant and its extracts in various pathological conditions. Thus, the CM plant extract at various concentrations were prepared and antioxidant activity was evaluated. The fresh leaves and bark of CM were collected and various extracts such as n-Hexane, Chloroform, Ethanol and aqueous extract were prepared. The preliminary phytochemical investigation showed the presence of various phytochemical such as total phenolic, flavonoid compounds and tannins. The ethanolic leaves extract of CM (ELECM) and water leaves extract of CM (WLECM), showed dose dependent increased in free radical scavenging activity in DPPH assay and reducing power assay in present study. Moreover, ethanolic barks extract of CM (EBECM) and water barks extract of CM (WBECM), also showed increased in free radical scavenging activity in DPPH assay and reducing power assay. However, the effects of bark extracts were lower than leaves extracts. In the light of the above consideration, the results of the study revealed that ELECM showed promising antioxidant activity in a dose dependent manner.

Background: Mandarin by-products, such as peels and seeds, are considered as one of the naturel source of phenolic compounds. Aim: The objective of the present study was to compare the phenolic compounds contents and antioxidant activity of different parts (pulps, seeds, juices, and peels) of three mandarins varieties extracts. Material and methods: Total phenolic, flavonoid, and proanthocyanidin contents of the extracts were assessed while, the antioxidant activity was evaluated using three tests including ferric reducing power, free radical scavenging activity, and phosphomolybdate. Results: The Mediterranean Mandarin peels present a high total phenolics and flavonoids contents with values of 2445.62 mg GAE/100g FW and 609.78 mg QE/100g FW, respectively. Likewise, the clementine juice showed the highest proanthocyanins contents with value of 46.67 mg CE/100g FW. Seeds and pulps of the three varieties present the lowest phenolic compound contents. Mediterranean Mandarin juice showed a strong ferric reducing power and phosphomolybdate with values of 1270.91 and 190.19 mg AAE/100g FW, respectively, however, the peels reveled a strong free radical scavenging activity with value of 259.89 mg AAE/100 g FW. Statistical analysis showed a positive correlation between the antioxidant activity and the phenolic compounds contents of the three studied mandarins varieties extracts. Conclusion: Among the analyzed cultivars, Mediterranean mandarin variety may be considered as the most promising source of polyphenols and antioxidants, compared to the clementine and Satsuma varieties. Moreover, this study also highlights important properties of the fruit parts generally considered wastes. Keywords: Mandarins, different parts, phenolics compounds, antioxidant activity.

The ethanolic extract of the leaves of Cassia occidentalis (Co) were subjected to phytochemical analysis by standard qualitative analysis and the invitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by determination of total antioxidant capacity, 1.1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) radical scavenging activity, superoxide scavenging activity and Ferric reducing anti oxidant potential (FRAP). The analyses revealed that the ethanolic extract of Co was able to efficiently scavenge the free radicals in a dose dependant manner. The results were compared with the standard antioxidant ascorbic acid. The results have shown that crude ethanolic extract of the leaves of Co showed excellent antioxidant activity due to the presence of bioactive compounds namely alkaloids, betacyanin, cardiac glycosides, coumarins, flavonoids, phenols, steroids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, anthraquinones and emodins.

AbstractIn vitro free radical scavenging activity of aqueous and ethanolic bark extracts of Bauhinia racemosa was assessed by studying its ability to scavenge DPPH, Nitric oxide, hydroxyl radical and reducing power. Both the extracts showed effective free radical scavenging activity. Ethanolic extract was comparatively more potential than aqueous extract. The results support its traditional use in various ailments and as a source of natural antioxidants which protect cells against oxidative stress.

The human body has an elaborate antioxidant defence system. Antioxidants are manufactured within the body and may even be extracted from the food like fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, meats and oil. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a rich source of antioxidant vitamins such as A, C and E, that prevent cellular damage associated with many diseases. This present investigation was designed to evaluate the radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extract of Cucumis melo fruit. The in vitro free radical scavenging effect of the Cucumis melo (L) fruit extract was assessed by using 1,1 – diphenyl 2-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH), ABTS (2, 2’-Azinobis (3-ethyl Benz Thiazoline-6-Sulfonic acid) hydroxyl radical, reducing power and nitric oxide scavenging assay. The scavenging activity of the fruit extract was tested at different concentrations. C.melo fruit extract showed concentration dependant free radical scavenging activity. Ethanol extract of Cucumis melo fruit (EECMF) exhibited maximum scavenging activity against DPPH (64.46%), ABTS (70.52%) hydroxyl radical (62.57%), and nitric oxide (61.18%) in comparison with standard antioxidants. The reducing power of ethanol extract of C.melo fruit was found to be 0.11 at 0.2mg/ml and increased to 0.49 at 1mg/ml. These results clearly indicate that ethanolic extract of C.melo fruit has great potential of free radical scavenging activity and it may be used as a bioactive source of natural antioxidants for pharmacology of functional foods.

In this study, three Serbian honey samples (Acacia, Linden and "Homoljski med") were analyzed to determine their total phenolic, flavonoid and antioxidant content, as well as their in vitro antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of honeys was examined by different tests, including the reducing power and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. In addition, correlations between the antioxidant activity and total phenolic, as well as flavonoid content were also sought. The highest content of total phenolics (27.44 mg/100 g), flavonoids (9.78 mg/100 g), reducing power and DPPH free radical scavenging activity were obtained in the case of Linden honey. The EC50 values of the Linden honey, determined based on the reducing power and DPPH radical scavenging activity, were 24.17 mg/ml and 51.34 mg/ml, respectively. Also, the antioxidant content was highest for Linden honey, and it valued 5.45 mg QEAC/100 g (expressed as mg of quercetin equivalent antioxidant content - QEAC per 100 g of honey) and 7.82 mg AEAC/100 g (expressed as mg of ascorbic acid equivalent antioxidant content - AEAC per 100 g of honey). Also, a linear correlation was observed between the antioxidant activity and total phenolics, as well as total flavonoids.

Chlorophyll is the blood of plant possesses a medical-value for treating support of disease in human, and the paper focused on the purification of antioxidant chlorophyll extracting from maize leaves in Vietnam. Chlorophyll was extracted with 96% ethanol and segmented by different solvents, for example, n-hexane, 96% ethanol, and ethyl acetate, respectively. Ethanol fraction was running via the chromatography column of silica gel for collecting antioxidant purified chlorophyll. All fractions were analysed chlorophyll content, antioxidant activities (total antioxidant activity, reducing power activity, and DPPH free radical scavenging activity) and run the thin layer chromatography for determining the chlorophyll purification degree and the Rf. The results showed that the purification of antioxidant chlorophyll from maize leaves was by using the liquid-liquid segment and the column run, for example, in turn, ethanol, n-hexane, ethanol, and the silica gel chromatography. The highest value of chlorophyll content, total antioxidant activity, reducing power activity, and DPPH free radical scavenging activity was 0.563±0.003 µg chl equivalent/ml, 1.392±0.018 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/ml, 3.396±0,024 mg FeSO4/ml, and 76.34±0.81 (%), respectively, as the n-hexane/ethanol ratio of 1/1 (v/v). After the chromatography run, chlorophyll content, total antioxidant activity, reducing power activity, and DPPH free radical scavenging activity corresponded to 0.217±0.002 µg chl equivalent/ml, 0.628±0.013 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/ml, 1.928±0.019 mg FeSO4/ml, and 77.19±0.58 (%), respectively. Abstract Opuntia stricta Haw. is considered as one of the most common cactus plant growing in Tunisia. Extracting valuable compounds from its fruit peel, considered as by-product, is drawing more and more attention, making it on the verge of commercialization. Water-soluble polysaccharides were extracted from Opuntia stricta Haw. peels, and their chemical composition assessed using thin layer chromatography. The antioxidant activities of the extracted polysaccharides were assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity and reducing power capacity. The extraction yield of water-soluble polysaccharides was 7.53±0.86%. The chemical composition revealed the presence of rhamnose, arabinose, glucose, mannose, galactose and galacturonic acid. The infra-red spectroscopic analysis showed a similar structure to that of Opuntia ficus-indica polysaccharide peels. Additionally, the extracted polysaccharides exhibited high antioxidant activities. In fact, the free radical scavenging activity (half inhibition concentration = 6.5 mg ml−1 with 94.9% inhibition at 50 mg ml−1), the total antioxidant activity (100 μg ascorbic acid equivalent at 50 mg polysaccharides) and the reducing power capacity (absorbance 700 nm = 0.7 at 50 mg ml−1), appeared to be interesting compared to natural and synthetic antioxidants. Therefore, water-soluble polysaccharides from Opuntia stricta Haw. fruit peels could be a natural alternative to replace synthetic antioxidants.
