The schism in the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1844, and her reunion in 1939, fall into a pattern remarkably similar to that of the great schism and reunion of the United States. The antislavery movement possessed religious overtones of the same evangelical temper characteristic of Methodism; and the centralized—constitutional, if you will— structure of Methodism exposed it to federal-versus-regional stresses similar to those that divided the nation. There is the significant difference that the Northern and Southern Methodists parted amicably, and did not become involved in partisan bitterness until after the adjournment of their last General Conference together, but otherwise the parallel is complete: general acceptance of the principle of emancipation by the founders both of church and nation; with the renascence of slavery, the recession of this view, marked by a series of compromises in General Conference as in the Congress; the rise, and unpopularity, of militant abolitionism; a dramatic revival of partisan concern, marked by an acute constitutional debate growing sectional irreconcilability: schism; conflict—and an eventual resolution of the breach in terms of the tacit recognition by the North of the principle of segregation.

The first independent Pentecostal denomination in Latin America was founded in early twentieth-century Chile after a schism within the Methodist Episcopal Church. This chapter explores the origins of Chilean Pentecostalism, focusing particular attention on historical and theological connections with Methodism. I argue that although scholars are certainly right in paying careful attention to intrinsic developments, Chilean agency, and processes of indigenization, the history of Chilean Pentecostalism is in fact closely related to the history of global Pentecostalism because of a shared Methodist heritage. The chapter demonstrates that some of the internal, social, and theological tensions that caused the schism within the Methodist Episcopal Church, resulting in the foundation of a new Pentecostal ministry, have deep roots within North American Methodism. What Chilean Pentecostalism inherited from certain branches of Methodism was a strong revivalist urge and a contestatory cultural character that often clashed with a ‘high church’ push towards respectability.

In November 1842, La Roy Sunderland, Orange Scott and Jotham Horton, leading abolitionists and ministers, withdrew from the Methodist Episcopal Church. The first issue of the True Wesleyan, Scott's anti-slavery newspaper, published an announcement of their withdrawal and their reasons for deciding to do so. They could no longer serve a church that condoned slavery and that scarcely permitted delegates to its conferences to raise the issue there. The three dissenters saw what they regarded as the high-handed tactics of the bishops in preventing conferences from considering anti-slavery resolutions as resting upon ‘the assumptions of Rome’! This act of withdrawal and the formation of the wesleyan Methodist Church die following May came after a six years' struggle between the radical abolitionists within the Church and their more conservative brethren, principally the bishops, who had stifled discussion of the slavery issue in order to preserve the Church as a national entity. This Wesleyan schism is a token of the change that is the subject of this essay.
